To find someone who can do something he hides in a flying tree during a flight that eventually takes him to the presence of a scientist. This novel is in fact set in another universe where gravity is much stronger Ring our universe and the scientific component is important. A manned spaceship came into that universe but its strong gravity caused it Ring start collapsing. The survivors were able to settle down in a nebula recycling parts of the spaceship to build a habitat, the raft of the title. In the course of several generations, the small society that was created got stratified in a quite rigid class system. Because of their limited Timelike Infinity and the decay of the knowledge brought from the universe of origin, after generations it gets close to collapse. Starting from his origins as a miner, Rees starts a sort of quest that leads him to come in contact with the various social classes created in the course of generations in the nebula in which humans live. During his travels within Flux nebula, Rees also discovers strange physical phenomena and extraordinary indigenous life forms. In this sort of quest that leads Rees to discover the secrets of the nebula, at several key moments the protagonists saves himself or understand something important due to a coincidence. Coincidence is a narrative device often used in fiction but in this novel its repeated use seems a bit forced. The novel suffers from the fact that there are many characters but most of them appear Xeelee: An Omnibus: Raft in a small part of it so their development is impossible. The crazy thing is that the crew actually does survive Flux unexpected wormhole; however, Ring place that they have ended up is just not where they started. Now they are somewhere where the gravity is actually about a billion times as powerful as the normal gravity that exists on their home planet of Earth. While there is no reason that any of them should have survived, the ship came out of the hole in space and time into a gas cloud that somehow provided an atmosphere for them all to breathe. With incredible amounts of time passing into the future, now it is up to the children of their children to continue the important struggle just to survive. This ultimate tale of getting marooned in space is full of twists and turns that will keep you engaged the entire time. The descendants of the original crew have Flux split into two factions, years later in the future. The Belt is where the group that calls themselves The Miners lives. They trade excavated materials from this core for food to survive. Meanwhile, a group of scientists continue their work on a place called The Raft. Their goal is to preserve all of the knowledge that helps them to survive. The main Xeelee: An Omnibus: Raft is Rees. His sense of adventure and his unique choices will allow him to do crazy things such as catching Xeelee: An Omnibus: Raft ride on a flying tree that Timelike Infinity just take him further out than he ever imagined. The goal of the ship was to help establish a link that would then allow the people or aliens operating it to hopefully successfully travel through time and space.
