Spoliarium, which Wikipedia stated, is often misspelled to Spolarium (Guilty, I am afraid LOL ) is arguably the most famous Filipino painting of all time. Spoliarium was painted by the celebrated Juan Luna, a renowned Filipino painter, and patriot. It took him eight long months to paint it in a huge massive canvas; it depicts dying gladiators being dragged across the spoliarium, which was the basement of the Roman Coliseum, where gladiators were dumped unceremoniously after defeat. For pride and patriotism: Apparently, Juan Luna entered his masterpiece to the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1884 in Madrid and won the gold medal award, thus showed Europeans and the rest of the world that little indios (what Filipinos used to be called, derogatorily) can paint like the best of them. Bravo. And it gave publicity for the Philippines to the wider world. The Spoliarium was then sold for 20,000 pesetas to Diputación Provincial de Barcelona but it now hangs in the main gallery on the ground floor of the National Museum of the Philippines. This was due to the generosity and goodwill from General Franco of Spain who donated the masterpiece to the Philippines. It made me gasp to know that to ship the painting to the Philippines, with its humongous size of 4.22 meters x 7.675 meters, (which makes it is the largest painting in the Philippines), it was crated in three separate pieces. Ouchhhh! It took the stalwart magical touches of Antonio Dumlao to perform the almost impossible task of relining and cleaning and Carlos da Silva of mounting, framing, and further architectural work to the painting. After a couple of years of intensive and extensive works, the painting was ready once again for public viewing. It was unveiled In December 1962 in the Hall of Flags of the Department of Foreign Affairs. Alas, the painting continued to be restored over the years as it suffered from an attack of the moulds at one point due to moisture from the air- conditioning system at the DFA. At its present location at the National Museum, the lines where the great painting was joined are also beginning to show. It is a long job to oversee its full restoration; expertise is required which it currently receives in small measure. Be that as it may, it is a treat to museum visiting public as the huge Spoliarium welcomes you upon entry to the National Museum. I hope this painting gets the full attention it requires from the experts as it is a national treasure that has a pride of place in our history. Whether true or not, allegedly Luna’s success with his Spoliarium was the thing that inspired Jose Rizal to create his Spoliarium through his own novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. Mendoza / Reinforcing Myths About Women in Philippine Culture 275 REINFORCING MYTHS ABOUT WOMEN IN PHILIPPINE CULTURE Semiotic Analyses of the Sexbomb Girls in Eat Bulaga’s Laban o Bawi Trina Leah Mendoza University of the Philippines Los Baños [email protected] Abstract Movie and TV stars are an influential part of Philippine society. Not only do they entertain audiences with their television shows or movies, but their private lives and actions are arguably as interesting to the public. Celebrities and stars are admired, idolized, and looked up to by many of their followers, such that their values and actions can greatly influence their fans. However, their images may hold various meanings that are not evident to many people. This study analyzes a group of unconventional stars that changed the landscape of noontime viewing—the Sexbomb Girls—using a semiotic approach. It seeks to reveal the different images of women portrayed by the Sexbomb Girls, and understand how media can reinforce myths. The Sexbomb Girls were a social phenomenon and a product of production that depicted binary oppositions and metaphors: virgin/vamp, loud woman, and ordinary woman. These signs, binary oppositions, and metaphors served as myths that naturalized, influenced, and reinforced sexy female background dancers into becoming an ordinary part of noontime and game shows. Because they appeared six days a week in Eat Bulaga, the Sexbomb Girls have desensitized the Filipino masses such that seeing sexily clad background dancers in these shows has become ordinary and acceptable. • Auteurs & Amateurs
Auteurs & Amateurs Toward an Ethics of Film Criticism Joel David Inha University, Korea Abstract Film criticism in the active film industries of Asia mimics the Western models on which film production is premised as well. The problem of sifting through and determining what constitutes film criticism first encounters the question of motive, admittedly an ethical one: is the critique independent enough to be taken as an evaluation free from the promotional requisite of the film being reviewed? From this distinction between serious commentary and presum- ably disposable publicity comes a hierarchy of writing on cinema, policed by a growing cadre of commentators on social networks and affirmed by instructors of communication and institutions that seek to bestow recognition for quality achievements. In ascending order, these would be film reporting (including gossip writing), promotions, reviewing, and criticism. I would argue, however, that this ground-level upward-gazing perspective impedes the larger envi- sioning of the discursive fields of film and culture. Criticism, in the industri- ally fostered operations of media, also serves its own promotional function, no matter how badly its practitioners claim to disavow the notion. What it promotes are the schools of thought and/or practice that give rise to theories DAVID: AUTEURS & AMATEURS UNITAS 17 that predetermine writers’ and artists’ orientations.
