Most of these studies however, have concentrated primarily on the larger zooplankters i.e. cladocerans and copepods. Relatively few comprehensive studies have been made of the rotifer fauna (Eddy, 1927; Ahlstrom, 1936; Nauwerck, 1972; Sternberger, 1974; Watson, 1974 and Bricker et al., 1977). The most recent of these studies (Nauwerck, 1972; Sternberger, 1974; Watson, 1974 and Bricker et al., 1977) have helped to fill many of the gaps that existed in some of the earlier investigations. The information contained in this text represents a compilation of data obtained from earlier taxonomic studies as well as data collected by the authors in 1975 and 1977. It is the first compre­ hensive report describing the planktonic or "open water" rotifers present in all the Great Lakes and is limited only to species identified within the past thirty-five years. Littoral species found in plankton samples as occasional migrants are also included in the text. These species are labeled to avoid confusion with planktonic forms. Lists of the common and uncommon or rare species and the respective lakes where they have been found appear in Tables 1 and 2, respectively. Organisms were placed in these categories based on observations by the authors and other taxonomists. It must be realized however, that spatial, seasonal, and yearly variations in species abundance and composition do occur in most natural aquatic systems. Consequently, some species that are common during one year or season may be uncommon or rare the next. Individuals interested in some of the ear1ier taxonomic studies should refer to the biblio­ graphy at the end of the text. 1 The taxonomic descriptions c9ncentrate primarily on external characteristics that are readily observable to aid the general biologist in keying to the genus and species level. These descrip­ tions are supplemented with drawings or photographs of the appropri­ ate species. The reader is encouraged to also use the taxonomic keys, many of which have excellent illustrations, cited at the end of the text. Although this key is written for the general taxonomist, we believe the photographs and drawings will also be of value to the specialist. MORPHOLOGY Rotifers exhibit considerable variability in morphology and are represented by both loricate and illoricate fonns. The rotifer body can generally be differentiated into a head, trunk, and foot. Figure 1 illustrates some of the general morphological features characteristic of many species. The anterior end (head) contains a ciliated corona which functions primarily as a means of locomotion as well as for directing food into the mouth. A foot may be present in some species and absent in others. When a foot is present, it will often bear one or two toes. Several methods of feeding are displayed among rotifers. One of the most common methods involves the movement of the coronal cilia which create small water currents. These currents direct plankton and detritus into the mouth, whereupon particles of suitable size are ingested (Pennak, 1953). The food is then mechanically broken down by the mastax which contains jaw-like structures known as trophi. Some rotifers obtain their food by thrusting out their trophi which grasp the prey and directs the food into the stomach. A third method utilizes the trophi to pierce the prey and then a "sucking" mechanism to ingest the body contents. The type of trophi is an important taxonomic feature used to distinguish rotifer genera. Figure 2 illustrates the eight major types of trophi: malleate, virgate, forcipate, incudate, ramate, malleoramate, and uncinate. These structures can be observed by placing the specimen on a depression microscope slide containing a 10 percent solution of sodium hypochlorite (Chlorox bleach). The sodium hypoch1orite dissolves the soft parts leaving only the trophi for easy observation (Myers, 1937).

Published data on the ecology and taxonomy of this group has also been reviewed. There are 35 species of sessile rotifers from three families Atrochidae, Collothecidae, and Flosculariidae, but to that four more species in the planktonic family Conochilidae may be added, as recent molecular research indicates that this family lies within Flosculariidae.

We identified 44 different taxa of sessile rotifers, including thirty-nine fixosessile species and three planktonic colonial species. This corresponds with about 40 % of the global sessile rotifer diversity, and is the highest alpha-diversity of the group ever recorded from a single lake. The record further includes a new genus, Lacinularoides n. gen., containing a single species L. coloniensis (Colledge, 1918) n. comb., which is redescribed, and several possibly new species, one of which, Ptygura thalenoiensis n. spec. is formally described here. Ptygura noodti (Koste, 1972) n. comb. is relocated from Floscularia, based on observations of living specimens of this species, formerly known only from preserved, contracted specimens from the Amazon region.

    TOWARDS A MANAGEMENT HIERARCHY (CLASSIFICATION) FOR THE CATALOGUE OF LIFE Draft Discussion Document Rationale The Catalogue of Life partnership, comprising Species 2000 and ITIS (Integrated Taxonomic Information System), has the goal of achieving a comprehensive catalogue of all known species on Earth by the year 2011. The actual number of described species (after correction for synonyms) is not presently known but estimates suggest about 1.8 million species. The collaborative teams behind the Catalogue of Life need an agreed standard classification for these 1.8 million species, i.e. a working hierarchy for management purposes. This discussion document is intended to highlight some of the issues that need clarifying in order to achieve this goal beyond what we presently have. Concerning Classification Life’s diversity is classified into a hierarchy of categories. The best-known of these is the Kingdom. When Carl Linnaeus introduced his new “system of nature” in the 1750s ― Systema Naturae per Regna tria naturae, secundum Classes, Ordines, Genera, Species …) ― he recognised three kingdoms, viz Plantae, Animalia, and a third kingdom for minerals that has long since been abandoned. As is evident from the title of his work, he introduced lower-level taxonomic categories, each successively nested in the other, named Class, Order, Genus, and Species. The most useful and innovative aspect of his system (which gave rise to the scientific discipline of Systematics) was the use of the binominal, comprising genus and species, that uniquely identified each species of organism. Linnaeus’s system has proven to be robust for some 250 years. The starting point for botanical names is his Species Plantarum, published in 1753, and that for zoological names is the tenth edition of the Systema Naturae published in 1758.

The Lake Champlain drainage basin is bordered by the Adirondack Mountains of New York to the west and the Green Mountains of Vermont to the east. This unique ecosystem has a surface area of 1130 km2, a length of 200 km and a mean depth of 19.4 m. The lake shoreline extends from Quebec in the north, 200 km south to Whitehall, New York, where it connects to the Hudson-Champlain canal. Islands and man-made transport causeways divide the lake into several distinct parts: Main Lake, South Lake, and Northeast Arm including Missisquoi Bay, and Malletts Bay.

The plankton and semi-plankton samples collected from four floodplain lakes (beels) of Barpeta district of lower Brahmaputra river basin, Assam state, northeastern India (NEI) revealed eighteen rotifer species of biodiversity and biogeographic interest belonging to five families and six genera. One species is new to the Indian Rotifera and one species is new to Assam. Our collections are characterized by two Australasian elements, five Oriental endemics, seven paleotropical species, and one cosmo (sub) tropical species. Nine species, restricted to date to NEI, are examples of regional distribution importance in India while six species depicted disjunct distribution in the country. Interestingly, seven species are categorized as Eastern hemisphere elements. All the taxa are illustrated to warrant validation as an increasing magnitude of ‘unverifiable records’ is a serious impediment for the progress of rotifer biodiversity in India. Keywords. The biodiverse Rotifera of northeast India (NEI) revealed 303 species belonging to 53 genera and 24 families; ~96% of these species examined from seven states of NEI affirm the rotifer heterogeneity of our plankton and semi-plank- ton collections. This study documents the record number of species of global and regional biogeographic interest, high- lights affinity with Southeast Asian and Australian faunas, and indicates notable heterogeneity in richness and composition amongst the seven northeastern states. The speciose rotifers of small lentic biotopes of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura, the floodplain lakes beels( ) and small wetlands (dobas and dubies) of the Brahmaputra and the Barak floodplains of Assam, and the floodplain lakes (pats) of Manipur are noteworthy. Deepor Beel and Loktak Lake (two Ramsar sites) are the globally rich rotifer `hotspots’. Interesting assemblages per sample of 80+ species in certain beels and pats, and up to 50 species in dobas and dubies depict the `Rotifera paradox’.

Observations on the following was made: 1) Morphological description of the male, 2) An analysis of mating behavior, 3) An analysis of female and male life-span at 25oC, and 4) Morphometric characterization of the three types of eggs known in this species and determination of hatching percentages of sexual eggs at 20 and 25oC. SEM photographs of the male are included, the female and parthenogenetic and sexual eggs. Some complementary photographs with the light microscope are also included. The mating behavior of B. quadridentatus is similar to those of other brachionids. Attempted copulations lasted on average 12.4 s, and completed copulations lasted on average 71.4 s. B. quadridentatus is the Brachionus species with the longest duration of copulation recorded so far.

    About the Book For more than ten years I have been working on a book on bryophyte ecology and was joined by Heinjo During, who has been very helpful in critiquing multiple versions of the chapters. But as the book progressed, the field of bryophyte ecology progressed faster. No chapter ever seemed to stay finished, hence the decision to publish online. Furthermore, rather than being a textbook, it is evolving into an encyclopedia that would be at least three volumes. Having reached the age when I could retire whenever I wanted to, I no longer needed be so concerned with the publish or perish paradigm. In keeping with the sharing nature of bryologists, and the need to educate the non-bryologists about the nature and role of bryophytes in the ecosystem, it seemed my personal goals could best be accomplished by publishing online. This has several advantages for me. I can choose the format I want, I can include lots of color images, and I can post chapters or parts of chapters as I complete them and update later if I find it important. Throughout the book I have posed questions. I have even attempt to offer hypotheses for many of these. It is my hope that these questions and hypotheses will inspire students of all ages to attempt to answer these. Some are simple and could even be done by elementary school children. Others are suitable for undergraduate projects. And some will take lifelong work or a large team of researchers around the world. Have fun with them! The Format The decision to publish Bryophyte Ecology as an ebook occurred after I had a publisher, and I am sure I have not thought of all the complexities of publishing as I complete things, rather than in the order of the planned organization.

Thirteen species belonging to nine genera in five families of monogonont and bdelloid rotifers were identified: Bryceella perpusilla Wilts, Martinez Arbizu and Ahlrichs, 2010, Collotheca ornata (Ehrenberg, 1830), Habrotrocha flava Bryce, 1915, H. pusilla (Bryce, 1893), Macrotrachela aculeata Milne, 1886, M. plicata (Bryce, 1892), Mniobia montium Murray, 1911, M. tentans Donner, 1949, Notommata cyrtopus Gosse, 1886, Philodina lepta Wulfert, 1951, P. tranquilla Wulfert, 1942, Pleuretra hystrix Bartoš, 1950 and Proalinopsis caudatus (Collins, 1873). All these rotifers are new to Korea, and B. perpusilla, H. flava, M. montium, P. caudatus, P. hystrix and P. lepta are new to Asia as well. Of interest, the present study is the first to record B. perpusilla outside its type locality. In addition, P. lepta has previously been recorded from only three European countries. New autoecological information on each species is also established giving conductivity ranges, alkalinity, pH and temperature for each. Original drawings and photographs obtained on both optical and electronic microscopy are shown of the majority of the species found.
