PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Sammy Bergman WHAT DOES HASHEM WANT US TO GAIN? Judaism demands a lot from us. Halacha demands a constant awareness of one’s environment. When deciding where to live, we need to consider factors such as synagogue proximity, options for Jewish education, kosher food availability, and accessibility to mikvaot and other Jewish amenities. I write this Dvar Torah during a vacation my family specifically chose because of the various kosher food options, a hotel that was Shabbat friendly, accessibility to a daily Minyan, and enough activities to satisfy two children, a six-year-old and a one-year-old. One could view the demands of a Torah lifestyle as an encumbrance. However, I believe that Moshe Rabbeinu argues for a diJerent perspective in our Torah reading this week. In Devarim 10:12, after recounting the sin of the Golden Calf, Moshe makes a startling statement which begins as follows: “And now Israel, what does Hashem your God ask of you but only…” With that introduction, one would expect that Moshe would follow with a small request from God, perhaps to give some tzedakah or to perform a small act of kindness. Nevertheless, Moshe continues with a laundry list of demands which quite literally shape every moment of a Jew’s life. It turns out Hashem asks us to fear Him, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, to serve Him with all our hearts and souls, and to observe all the commandments. The Ramban explains that the keywords which frame Moshe’s series of Hashem’s demands from us are the last two of verse 10:13, which read “l’tov lach ,” or for your benefit. As verse 14 continues, Hashem controls the entire universe and doesn’t need anything from us. Hashem designed the Torah lifestyle for our benefit to imbue every moment of our lives with meaning and to help each of us develop a relationship with Him. Hashem only asks that we live rigorous spiritual lives so that we get the most out of the world He created for us. If we keep the Ramban’s l’tov lach in mind, we can frame the constant demands of halacha diJerently. Rather than only asking what does Hashem require from me, we can also ask what does Hashem want me to gain from this experience? How can I make it both enjoyable and meaningful? May we succeed in observing every aspect of our rich tradition and allow that tradition to enrich every moment of our lives. • Rabbi Diamond will be giving a Parsha Shiur on Shabbat afternoon between Mincha and Maariv. • Trei Asar Shiur has ended for the season.
