Here we bear east to Knott Hill and Lower and Higher Greystonely. Still in the same direction, we pass Fair Oak and eventually reach New Laund Hill. At this point we have wonderful views over the Hodder Valley looking towards Whitewell. Turning west we head to Tunstall Ing, Dinkling Green Farm, Parkgate, Birchen Lee and back to Chipping.

Sun 17 May Yarrow Valley C Walk with Derek Lowe Meet at Birkacre Visitor Centre just off the Chorley to Coppull Road Distance 6 ½ undulating miles / 10.5km We start our walk climbing gently up Burgh Hall Road past the Waste Disposal Centre, over Birkacre Moor and through the Weldbank Estate to reach Weldbank School. At this point a new by-pass has been built which we have to follow to reach Big Wood. We enter Big Wood by a gate and drop down to the River Yarrow which we follow to the right until we come to a footbridge. On the far side we follow field paths and wood paths to reach Big Lodge and the Visitors Centre. Once again I have booked the weather. Have a nice day!

Bowscale Fell & with Graham Hogg Grade A Distance 11miles / 17.7km Climbing 2625ft / 800m . In the past we have usually climbed Blencathra from Threlkeld. Well today, I thought we would try something a little different.

Starting at the Roman Camp, just off the A66(T) at Troutbeck, we first head northwest to . After following the River Glenderamackin for a short while we have a steep ascent up the Tongue to the summit of (2303 ft / 702m). From here, we continue to , then to Atkinson Pike before pushing on to the summit of Blencathra (2848ft / 868m). A traverse of the summit ridge leads us to Blease Fell, where we have a steep descent into Threlkeld.

The Mell with Tony Ingham

Grade B+ Distance 8¾ miles / 14.1km Climbing 1900ft / 580m

Alighting from the coaches at the A66(T)/A5091 junction at Troutbeck, we head south a short distance down the A5091 before leaving it to follow a path along a rifle range, now disused (honest!), to reach the foot of . We climb steeply to the top (1760ft / 537m). We then descend south eastwards, rather less steeply, to Brownrigg Farm and, from there, go east along field paths and a minor road to Lowthwaite. Continuing eastwards to The Hause we climb steeply to the trig point at the top of Little Mell Fell (1675ft / 505m). We descend by the same permissive path before heading north on a cart-track alongside the fell to Thackthwaite. From there we proceed to Stoddah and on through fields to Penruddock where the coach will pick us up, suitably refreshed, at the Herdwick Inn.

When I recced this walk on a fine, sunny day in Easter Week, I surprisingly met only one other walker all day. This is not something I have often experienced in the , yet it is an attractive and interesting walk. . with Dorothy Dobson

Grade B Distance 9 miles / 14.5km Climbing1200ft / 366m

Despite being dwarfed by and Blencathra, Latrigg, in good weather, offers breathtaking views over Derwent Water, Cat Bells and beyond. Let’s hope we are lucky with the day’s weather!

We begin in Threlkeld (toilets) by taking the footpath by the school and heading in a westerly direction across the fields to Ings, Wescoe Farm and on to Brudenholme. Here we join a wide stony track to head northwards towards Skiddaw. After half a mile we leave the track to join a grassy path on our left to make a gradual ascent to the summit of Latrigg, stopping once or twice to catch our breath.

After taking in the scenery, we descend by a zigzag path to join the Way. This path takes us over the A66 and eventually to the disused Keswick railway station, (more toilets) and the former railway track which is now a beautiful tree-lined walk. We follow the track for something over 3miles / 4.8km, crossing the meandering River Greta several times, before we reach the A66 once more and head back to Threlkeld.
