  • 7. Representações Do Oriente: a Invenção De Nós E Dos Outros

THE BOOK At the Census of India, in 1881, an attempt was lll3de to obtain the materials for a complete list of all Castes and Tribes as 1 eturned by the. people themselves .and ente red by the Census Enumerators in their Schedutes. Instructions were sent to .each Province and Native State directing that the number of each Caste recorded, .and the composition of each Caste by sex should be shown in the .:final report. In this manner it was designed to lay "a foundation for further research into the little l-nown subject of Caste," a subject .in inquiring into which investigators have been gravelled, not for lack of matter but from its abundance and complexity, and the lack of all rational arran~ment. The subject as a whole has indeed been a mighty maze without a plan. An inquirer .into the social habits and customs of a Caste in nne district h.a.s always been liable to the .subse quent dis.covery that the people whom he had met were but offshoots or wanderers from a larger Tribe whose home was in another province. The distinctive habits and customs of a people are of course always freshest and most marked where the mass of that people dwell : and when a detachment wanders away or splits off from the parent Tribe and settles elsewhere, it suffers, notwithstanding its Caste-conserv ancy. a certain change through the moul ding influence of superior numbers around. Hence the desideratum of a bird'.s-eye view of the entire system of Castes and Tribes found in India : and this, as far as tlteir strength and distribution go, is what 1 have tried to supply in this Compendium.

  • Review of Literature
Chapter 2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE Review of Literature Review of Literature Clothing reflects about one’s membership in a culture and of the many groups he/ she belongs or relates to within a culture. Costumes forms an important element amongst all the cultural expressions defining one’s identity in India. Eicher writes ethnic dress is a notable aspect of ethnicity. Again, Claus and Korom states that a folkloristic or an ethnographic study includes the study of culture, history and psychology. These represent the three fundamental dimensions in which expression exists. What forms and shapes any expression is the past (history, tradition), the outer context (Culture) and the inner motivation (psychology). And there are always other pertinent lines of inquiry- political structure, economics, geography and others (Claus P. and Korom F.,1991: 41). Therefore, the present chapter aims to take a preliminary glimpse of the factors coming under the purview of the subject under study. 2.1. Theoretical review 2.1.1. • History of Indian Cinema.Pdf
CHAPTER – 2 A BRIEF HISTORY OF INDIAN CINEMA Indian films are unquestionably the most –seen movies in the world. Not just talking about the billion- strong audiences in India itself, where 12 million people are said to go to the cinema every day, but of large audiences well beyond the Indian subcontinent and the Diaspora, in such unlikely places as Russia, China, the Middle East, the Far East Egypt, Turkey and Africa. People from very different cultural and social worlds have a great love for Indian popular cinema, and many have been Hindi Films fans for over fifty years. Indian cinema is world – famous for the staggering amount of films it produces: the number is constantly on the increase, and recent sources estimate that a total output of some 800 films a year are made in different cities including Madrass , Bangalore , Calcutta and Hyderabad . Of this astonishing number, those films made in Bombay, in a seamless blend of Hindi and Urdu, have the widest distribution within India and Internationally. The two sister languages are spoken in six northern states and understood by over 500 million people on the Indian sub – continent alone – reason enough for Hindi and Urdu to be chosen above the fourteen official Indian languages to become the languages of Indian Popular cinema when sound came to the Indian Silver screen in 1931 . Silent Era – The cinematographe (from where we have the name cinema) invented by the Lumiere brothers functioned better the Kinetoscope of Edison and Dickson. The Lumiere brothers who invented the cinematographe started projection of short (very short, one to two minutes long) films for the Parsian public on November 28, 1895.
