GAUL IV* The Ultimate Fighting Championship (“UFC”) is the premier mixed martial arts (“MMA”) promotion in the world and is the most recent athletic organization to attain a dominant market share that arguably constitutes a monopoly or monopsony. Antitrust law prohibits organizations from restraining trade or intentionally stamping out market place competition to attain or maintain monopoly power. The UFC’s behavior has raised significant concerns about competition in two separate markets: the MMA Promotional Market and Elite MMA Labor Market. While the MMA Promotional Market appears more competitive than it has ever been, the Elite MMA Labor Market has seen significant reductions in competition.

  • Two Million Converge on Makkah for Pilgrimage

The stampede legacy has contributed to renewed tensions between Saudi Arabia and its regional rival Iran, which is not sending pilgrims for the first time in nearly three decades. While the main rites of the six-day event begin today, pilgrims have already been swirling around the holy Kaaba at the Grand Mosque in holy Makkah, a procession that continues day and night. It is one of the first rites of the pilgrimage, which is among the largest religious gatherings in the world. The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, which capable Muslims must perform at least once, marking the spiritual peak of their lives. Rich and poor alike come dressed in the same white garments. “We don’t come here with fear in our hearts,” said Naouri Abdelkarim, 50, of Casablanca, Morocco. Death can come at any time, pilgrims say, and for Lawan Nasir, 45, that meant there was no reason to avoid the hajj even though he lost a cousin in last year’s stampede. “The pains have not dulled a bit,” but it would be “silly” to stay away, the Nigerian said.

Cubed Circle Newsletter 218 – Back in Business! After the release of the 2015 Cubed Circle Yearbook last week, we return with a more regular edition of the newsletter this week covering the New Japan Tokyo Dome, the departures that followed, the news of the week including NXT signings and injuries, as well as RAW from Monday. – Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter, Editor The Pro-Wres Digest for January 11th – January 16th 2016. Ben Carass On January 12th New Japan officially stripped Shinsuke Nakamura of the IWGP Intercontinental title. Nakamura was scheduled to defend, and presumably lose, the belt to Kenny Omega on 14/2 at the New Beginning in Niigata after the angle on the New Year's Dash show where Omega pinned Nakamura clean, took control of the Bullet Club and challenged Nakamura to a championship match. While comparisons will be made to Alberto Del Rio not dropping the AAA Mega Heavyweight title before signing with WWE and subsequently being stripped of that title, the situation with Nakamura and Japan is completely different since, as of yet, Nakamura still has not officially signed with the WWE and, unlike Del Rio, will seemingly be allowed to work the remaining dates he has left for New Japan. There's the Fantasticamania tour from 17/1 – 24/1 and after that Nakamura's final dates will be on 29/1 in Tokorozawa, headlined by Nakamura, Kazuchika Okada, Tomohiro Ishii & Gedo vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto,Katsuyori Shibata & Ryusuke Taguchi and 30/1 at Korakuen Hall with Nakamura, Okada & Ishii vs. Tanahashi, Goto & Shibata in an all-star main event.

i Wrestling With Stardom: The Factors and Contexts that Inform Relations Between Wrestling Stars and their Audiences Thomas Huw Alcott Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Aberystwyth University Department of Theatre, Film and Television 23. January 2018 ii Acknowledgments Anyone who has undertaken a large research project will know that the end result is never the work of just one person. It is built upon a much needed support network of people, who for the most part remain anonymous in the body of the text. This is my chance to acknowledge those people, without whom this work would never have been possible. To the best supervisors I could have asked for, Kate Egan and Sarah Thomas, for their dedication, support, help and most of all, friendship. I am greatly indebted to the many questionnaire respondents and focus group participants who took the time to help me in this project and made it possible. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and words. I will be forever grateful. To those members of the Theatre, Film and Television department at Aberystwyth University who showed such enthusiasm for, and interest in, my project. To Heike Roms for her help and support through the application process, and Rebecca Edwards for her constant encouragement and help in organising my symposium. I also want to acknowledge the role played by the Alumni Association without whose funding this research would not have been possible. To all the friends, flatmates and fellow PhD researchers with whom I shared this experience.

  • Cubed Circle Newsletter 222 – Daniel Bryan Retires in This Week's Newsletter We Look Into the Retirement of Bryan Danielson/Da
Cubed Circle Newsletter 222 – Daniel Bryan Retires In this week's newsletter we look into the retirement of Bryan Danielson/Daniel Bryan from a number of perspectives, recap the events leading up to Monday's retirement, comprehend the possible effects it may have on the future of pro-wrestling injuries and protocol, the rest of the RAW show, WWE financials, Titus 'O Neal, and more! – Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter Editor The Pro-Wres Digest for February 7th – February 13th Ben Carass. There is only one place to start this week, and that is with the retirement of one of the best professional wrestlers I have ever seen in my near 24 years of being a fan, Bryan Danielson, at the age of just 34. Danielson sent out a Tweet on Monday afternoon and revealed that the serial drama that had become his struggle to get medical clearance was finally over. “Due to medical reasons, effective immediately, I am announcing my retirement. Tonight on Raw, I'll have a chance to elaborate. #gratitude,” he revealed. Danielson's 35 minute retirement speech on RAW was one of the most genuine and relatable segments in the history of live Monday night wrestling and was among the best send-offs in pro wrestling history. But to understand the full story, you have to go back to March 31st 2015, two days after Bryan won the Intercontinental championship at WrestleMania 31, in Frenso, CA, when Danielson wrestled Sheamus in the main event. At the time I wrote about the match, “they had a good, hard-hitting match.
