LETTER FROM HUGH The month of November, the last month of the church year, is a busy month. November starts with All Saints day on the first and we will celebrate All Saints in the morning and, in the evening All Souls, the commemoration of the faithful departed where we reflect on those we see no longer in this life. The next weekend is Remembrance Sunday where we reflect on those who gave their lives for freedom. In the words of the Kohima Epitaph; "When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Their Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today". Advent is a time to reflect, to step back and think about our God who is with us and loves us and holds us in all the challenges we face. We have the freedom to express ourselves because of sacrifice. The sacrifice of war or from the sacrificial giving of family and friends to support us. We challenged to make the most of all that we are given. Most of all God gave his son to free us and enable us to live a life that reflects the love he first showed us. St Paul wrote; You are not living under that of tyranny (of sin) any longer. You’re living in the freedom of God. (Romans 6.14, The Message) How do we reflect the reality of that freedom? So often we go our own way, we wander off, we do our own thing. If we behaved towards people as we behave towards God would they put up with us? Would an employer employ us if we don’t do as we are asked? If we insulted the Queen as our lives so often insult God could we expect to get invited to a royal banquet? If we neglected our friends and family would they love us? From a human perspective what does the future hold? Fortunately God’s response is not a human response. God has patience and chooses to exercise that great patience to hold out his arms and wait. Jesus shows that love in action and word. You may wish to look up the following passages showing great patience and then look for others, the Bible has many references of God’s patience. - Peter denying Jesus three times and then being forgiven, gathered up and set up to found the church. - The disciples on the road to Emmaus and Jesus’ patience to lead them back to him. - The prodigal son and the patiently waiting father. We can have complete confidence that the merciful and patient of God will always be waiting for those that return. God responds to our weakness with patience. What that patience calls from us, is the courage to return, to turn again towards those open arms, those arms hold us in the strength than none can break. St Paul says; But sin didn’t, and doesn’t, have a chance in competition with the aggressive forgiveness we call grace. (Romans 6.20, The Message) The world offers us many choices and many of these exist because others gave their today so that we can have the choice of how we use our tomorrow. May we who seek God’s grace reflect with gratitude on those who have given us the choice. Yours in Christ, Hugh Colne Engaine Parish Magazine November 2015 / 5

Wear your poppy with pride. 6 www.colne-engaine.org.uk FLOWERS DECORATIONS DONATIONS

FLOWER POWER It's that time again, seasonal changes and Indian summers, approaching Autumnal weather, nights drawing in, oh well , it will soon be Christmas, not counting the shopping days are you? The flowers in the church in Colne Engaine have been lovely again this year, thanks to our ever decreasing group of flower arrangers, and Junior Church, directed by Ginny Jeggo and Alison McKeown. Colne Engaine School also decorate the church for their special festivals, again directed by Alison. Thanks also to Frances Simmons, Lynda Sayward and Doreen Woods. The annual poppy arrangement is donated by Janice Roper. We have had some very kind donations for the flower fund, and foraging rights into gardens for the foliage. But. There is always a but, keeping our beautiful church looking welcoming for us to enjoy as locals, visitors who join us for weddings, baptisms and funerals and other festivities also appreciate the flowers. There is a box at the back of the church marked Flower Fund for you to drop in a pound or two towards the purchase of flowers during the year and to replenish old vases and supplies. If you are passing the church or attending services please donate what you can, it will keep the church looking its best. Thank you so much. Your flower girl, Janie Estcourt

BIRTH MONTH FLOWER Each month has a flower that symbolizes the month of somebody's birth. The characteristics that the flower has may be "inherited" by whomever is born in that certain month. November’s Birth Month Flower is the Chrysanthemum, which symbolizes compassion, friendship and joy. Chrysanthemums have different meanings. Red is for Love, White means innocence, and Yellow denotes unrequited love. Colne Engaine Parish Magazine November 2015 / 7

This is a very accessible presentation of Pope Francis’ teaching about his vision for the Church, arranged and edited as a single book. TUESDAY 17TH NOVEMBER: COLNE MEN AT WORK EVENING THE FIRST of a new series of men's evenings will be hearing about how conflict can influence and change young people's lives.

Colne Men At Work aims to offer a social gathering for men of all ages, with speakers from all walks of life, with the first event in November. It is run by the St Andrew's churches in Earls Colne, Colne Engaine and White Colne and the evenings will include a hot meal and are open to people from across the Halstead area.

The churches have run a men's evening approximately once a year welcoming speakers including judges and an Army chaplain. To build on the success there will now be three events a year, extending a warm welcome to all men who enjoy good food, good pubs and good speakers.

It follows on from the successful launch of the Women Of The Word, a women's evening which is now firmly established by the Colne Churches and which holds its next event in October.

The Colne Men At Work event is at The Five Bells, Colne Engaine on Tuesday November 17th at 7:30pm. Tickets are £10 including hot food.

The first speaker is Craig Hutton who grew up in Northern Ireland, and now works with the Porch Project In Haverhill. The project aims to support young people’s physical, mental, social, spiritual and educational well-being. Youth workers and mentors work closely with a range of partner organisations and agencies to provide support if and when young people need it.

UPDATE FROM COLNE ENGAINE PRIMARY SCHOOL

We welcomed lots of new faces in school when we returned after the summer break. Mrs Baines joins our teaching team and Miss Nunn joins our team of Teaching Assistants. We are delighted to say ‘hello’ to Daniel, Emily, Wilf, Arthur, Toby, Florence, Louie, Liam, Oliver, Orla, Aidan, George, Teddy, Joshua and George, who join Class 1, William who joins class 2 and Bradley who joins Class 3. We welcome you all and wish you a happy time with us at Colne Engaine. We’ve been very busy over the summer sprucing up and developing our learning environment. We are delighted with our new roof and smart new fascia boards. We would now like to paint the front of the school to complete the transformation: watch this space for news of fundraising for the paint and then a working party weekend to get the job done! We have been lucky enough to receive a generous gift of an information screen in our entrance hall , to keep everyone up to date with school news as well as from around the world through a Newsround feed. We have created a music room and a ‘Discovery Zone’ over the summer, using exciting ideas generated by the children last term, including astroturf flooring, which really does give the Discovery Zone a WOW factor. Thank you to FACES for their generous support.

Class 1 has also had a makeover which has created much more space and has even allowed a Gruffalo cave to spring up in the corner overnight! Our Harvest Festival was a lovely occasion again this year. Rev Pete led our service, becoming a magician for the occasion AGAIN, as he held the children’s attention by making a bunch of flowers magically appear. We were thrilled to have lots of people join us for this occasion, as we celebrated Harvest with contributions from all of our children. Class 4 read their heartfelt prayers for kindness, focusing on the plight of those families who have had to leave their homes because of war. KS1 children sang a song for Harvest and Class 3 read their Harvest Poem. This year, our harvest collection was donated to Unicef’s ‘Children of Syria’ Appeal. We went back to school for a delicious Harvest Roast, with plaited sharing loaves for all and apple crumble to round things off – another triumph from Mrs Scillitoe and her team. In the afternoon, Class 4 held the ‘Great Colne Engaine Bake Off’. We were astounded that this attracted ONE HUNDRED AND SEVEN entries! Here are just a few of them: - more can be seen on the screen at school.

We raised an amazing £360 in selling every single crumb. We are overwhelmed yet again by the generosity of our families and community in supporting events in school – thank you to you all. UPDATE FROM COURTAULD MEMORIAL HALL & JUBILEE ANNEXE In September some of the Trustees and Users officially opened the newly refurbished side entrance together with the male and female toilets. We are very grateful to all who contributed be it financial or hard graft. It had been many years since they were last replaced and thus with the additional help from Grants we were able to do this. As we have mentioned before the upkeep is continuous so we will have new projects next year but more of that next time. We as Trustees were also invited to the WI Centenary supper and it was particularly pleasing to see the Hall in all its glory. As a village venue it has been used by the local branch for many years and they have also given much support whenever we have asked for it. Their generosity both as a group and individual members has provided over the years lots of items including fireproof curtains, trees, tables and now a microwave for the main kitchen. This in addition to a hiring charge. This is not unique. We are very fortunate to have organisations using the facilities regularly and we do aim to ensure it all continues. MEMORIES OF VJ DAY 70 Sat. 15th August, 2015 I learnt back in the summer that The British Legion were organising a 70th Anniversary Commemoration to honour veterans who had served in the Far East during the Second World War. The veterans were all invited but bearing in mind that, if still alive, they would probably all be in their 90's now, their sons and daughters - who would be there to represent them - were also invited . My father was in the Indian Army in Burma, and I therefore realised that I would qualify, and decided to apply - although I was still a little hesitant as one always thinks these parades are really just for the veterans. However, I did. I filled in all the details of his rank, where he served, etc. and received a letter back saying that I would qualify and to present myself at Horse Guards Parade ready for the Drumhead Service there at 2.00 p.m. I was still hesitant about it however, and really right up to the day before wondered if I should go. However, having got the ticket I realised that it would be a great shame not to go - even if I just went to the Drumhead Service and crept off home afterwards - avoiding the parade down Whitehall! However, in the end I did the whole thing. It was an amazing experience - and one which I will always remember. The day dawned bright and sunny and - not really knowing how long it would take me to get there and what the crowds would be like - I decided to set off early. I was therefore at Horse Guards Parade by 11.30. We had to present ourselves at the "Accreditation Centre" with some form of identification (i.e. Passport - not always my strong point as some of you will remember!) and were then given our security pass, along with a British Legion medallion to hang round our necks, had a British Legion bracelet clipped onto our wrists and were given a badge, a programme - and a Union Jack to wave! Our time was then our own until 2.00 o'clock - but this went very quickly with plenty to see and hear. We were seated in a semi-circle of marquees with a small one in the centre where the important people sat. These faced the bands which were at the back with the Drumhead dais in the centre. Charles Dance was to read "Mandalay" during the service, and we were fortunate in being able to listen to him rehearsing it. I found myself sitting next to a lady from Plymouth who was also representing her father, and another lady who had been in the Wrens. She hadn't been in the Far East but was in the Sick Bay on HMS Ganges on VJ Day, and remembered all the excitement of the day, and had been determined to come. She is now 89, on a frame and had come all the way down from Leeds on her own! Colne Engaine Parish Magazine November 2015 / 27

The service started at 2.00 p.m. with the arrival of Charles and Camilla and David Cameron, and an RAF flypast which included a Dakota and Hurricane. The first hymn was "Great is thy Faithfulness" and this was followed by the first reading by The Viscount Slim, President of the Burma Star Association who read an extract from his father Field Marshal Viscount Slim's Memoirs. The second reading was by Philip Knatchbull, grandson of Lord Mountbatten. Charles Dance read Rudyard Kipling's "Mandalay". "The FEPOW Prayer" was read by Mrs. Barbara Anslow, a civilian internee at the internment camp in Hong Kong: "And we that are left grow old with the years Remembering the heartache, the pain and the tears Hoping and praying that never again Man will sink to such sorrow and shame The price that was paid we will always remember Every day, every month, not just in November. We shall remember them." "Abide with me" was sung and the service ended with "The Kohima Epitaph” again read by The Viscount Slim, and the hymn "Guide me, O thou great Redeemer". In all a very moving service - conducted in a wonderful atmosphere and beautiful sunshine. After which we all made our way out into Whitehall . . . and were confronted by thousands of cheering, waving people who made such a fuss of the veterans - many of whom were in wheelchairs but all thoroughly enjoying it all. Security was obviously very high with a very large Police presence - all standing with guns and fixed bayonets pointing into the crowd. However, they were also enjoying it and joining in with the crowd - a very British occasion in fact. We made our way down Whitehall, past the Cenotaph and finished up in the gardens of Westminster Abbey where a marquee had been erected for tea. We found a table and were literally royally looked after by someone who turned out to be Lord and Lady Mountbatten's great granddaughter! I couldn't believe it and told her that I had a signed photo of them both! She was very pleased and said she would tell her grandmother! The photo was left to me by a friend of my parents who helped Lady Mountbatten with her welfare work at the end of the war evacuating the men who had been on the Burma Railway. Lady Mountbatten gave her the signed photo of them when she left. So all in all a very memorable day - and I wouldn't have missed it for the world! UPDATE FROM COLNE ENGAINE WAR MEMORIAL With the summer recess over we are back to the work of the memorial project. We are very pleased to announce that the Mi Community grant has been paid into our account. We are also very pleased to say that we have received two very generous donations. The first is from Daniel Robinson Funeral Directors who have given us £2,500 from their very successful charity golf day and the second is for £250 from The Western Front Association. We are very grateful for these and we are well on target now towards our fundraising target. Look out next month for more news on the project progression. If you haven’t purchased your bricks yet, please do it now, time is running out. Contact me on the e-mail below for a form. November is the time of remembrance and I would ask you this year to spend a moment of thought for two of our men. The first is Driver Raymond Fulcher who died of wounds on 10th November 1918 – the day before the end of WW1. The second is Private Tom Smith who died of wounds on 11th November 1918 – the day the war ended. To lose 2 of our men so close to the finish is, I hope you agree, both poignant and tragic. The memorial will now have 28 names from both world wars. We are very grateful to the work of Jill Fleming in helping us identify the lost men of Colne Engaine so that they can be properly and publicly remembered. We look forward to seeing as many of you at this year’s Remembrance Sunday Service. Spike Townsend, CEWM Chairman, [email protected]

GINETTE WARWICK’S LONDON 3 PEAKS CHALLENGE

Ginette Warwick is doing the London 3 Peaks on 10th October and so by the time you read this she will have completed the task. It consists of running 5 kilometres interspersed with climbing the Gherkin, (1088 steps), the Salesforce tower (888 steps) and 200 Aldwych (225 steps) before abseiling off the last one. It's all to raise money for Cancer Research in memory of her dad. A fuller report will be published next month. Meanwhile you can support Ginette’s at www.justgiving.com/Ginette-Warwick “I have never done anything like this before, never been to the gym, hate exercising and get breathless walking up a hill, ohh and I forgot to mention I hate heights!! My dad lost his battle, and it was a long battle, to bowel cancer in May 2012, I want to do this in his memory and to get off my backside and do something worthwhile. Please give what you can, we all know somebody who has been affected by this dreadful disease, every penny makes a difference and I truly believe that one day the brilliant scientists at Cancer Research will put an end to all cancers.” Ginette 32 www.colne-engaine.org.uk

UPDATE FROM COLNE ENGAINE RIDE AND STRIDE

We had a good day for Ride and Stride on 12th September, with the church open and our team of volunteers staffing the church and providing refreshment and signing participant’s forms. About 9 people visited us during the day - this is a reduced figure and general support for Ride and Stride seems to have continued to decline. In 2013, £79,300 was collected for Friends of Essex Churches. This declined to £70,570 for 2014. Half the monies collected by Colne Engaine participants comes back to our own church and the remainder to the Friends of Essex Churches Trust. For Colne Engaine the present total is £210 and tending to rise slowly! This sum does represent a decrease on previous year’s figures. Many thanks to all the volunteers who gave their time during the day - the welcome received at the church does make a big difference! Michael Green

RECIPE FOR BONFIRE TOFFEE

Bonfire toffee (also known as treacle toffee, Plot toffee, or Tom Trot) is a hard, brittle toffee associated with Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night. It tastes very strongly of molasses. 1. Line the base and sides of an A4 sized tin with non-stick parchment and then grease it really well. 2. Put the sugar and hot water in a heavy bottomed pan and heat gently until the sugar is dissolved, do not stir the mixture Ingredients at any point instead tilt the pan if you need to move it around.  oil, for greasing 3. Weigh out your remaining ingredients, if you put them in a really well greased jug they will be much easier to pour out.  450g dark brown sugar Once the sugar has dissolved add all the ingredients and pop  125ml hot water the sugar thermometer in, you can use the thermometer to  ¼ tsp cream of tartar give it a quick swirl but try not to mix it too much.  115g black treacle 4. Bring to the boil and boil until you reach soft crack on your thermometer (270/140C) This may take up to 30  115g golden syrup minutes, be patient and do not leave the pan unattended as it can change quickly. As soon as it reaches the temp, tip it into your tin and leave it to cool. Recipe found at www.bbcgoodfood.com/ 5. PEN AND INK SKETCHES IN THE COLNE VALLEY Part Two (Part One was in last month’s magazine) From the Chelmsford Chronicle – Friday 20 Oct 1880 Later on the gleaners were busily at work at White Colne, and it being holiday time there was a good sprinkling of youngsters. I asked one of them where he lived, and understood him to say “Wakes;” where he went to school, and “Wakes” was the answer: where he was going with his bag? “Gleaning at Wakes,” was the rejoinder. This monosyllable alternated with a guttural “Ugh”? was all that could be elicited. So I pursued my way from Wakes to White Colne, passing several noticeable old houses with bay windows, diamond panes, rustic porches, carved gables and twisted chimneys. Turning off on the right, a path through several fields leads to the church, an interesting, renovated building, occupying an elevated position in a pretty churchyard carefully tended. Bright scarlet geraniums in rows relieved the base of the tower and walls, standard rose trees in circular floral beds flanked the clean paths, and everywhere there were signs of taste and reverent care. It was evident that though the churchyard gates were not (as is too often the case) barred against parishioner and stranger, children were not allowed to play on the graves, or the parson’s goat, sheep or donkey to browse on the blossoms which love’s hand had placed on the grassy mound, or to knock down the lichen-clad gravestone. A stranger must be much pleased with the church. Order reigned throughout. The recent restorations had preserved and not destroyed the distinguishing features of the edifice. In the chancel arch on the north side of the pier is a curious arcade of three pointed arches enclosing blank niches, the centre one containing a pedestal as if for a statue. There is a good piscina, several handsome memorial windows, and a nice Jacobean pulpit, which although not agreeing with the 14th century architecture has been judiciously retained. These diversities in style of building or furniture, these transition bits of architecture and incongruous fittings – Norman doorway, early English pier, decorated niches, perpendicular screen, Tudor brick porch or tower, and Jacobean panel – make up a delightful whole, and if once swept away can never be restored. One rejoices that an energetic protest is being made against those wholesale restorers and lovers of brand-new stones and woodwork, who in the past have done more damage than reformer, puritan, and iconoclast combined. As for Cromwell and Dowsing, they were downright conservatives when compared with many of our reckless Anglican pseudo restorers. In front of the pulpit hangs a slate with the numbers of the hymns to be sung written plainly upon it; a very good plan one would imagine. There is a neat altar table and handsome cover, several memorial painted windows, and very good diapering, etc, on the chancel walls and roof.

UPDATE FROM FACES (FRIENDS AT COLNE ENGAINE SCHOOL) You may have noticed, back in September a rash of FACES Fiesta posters appearing and then disappearing around the village. This was due to the Rugby World Cup fixtures organiser very selfishly pitting vs Wales on the same night that our party was planned. So, it was decided, in light of our potentially depleted numbers to postpone. This Fiesta will now become our summer party and be held next July. We were really disappointed to have to cancel but, we’re sure you understand, with our charitable status we needed to be sure of a profit. Don’t forget that the FACES range of Colne Engaine greeting cards are still on sale at the Village Shop, available individually or in packs of 5. Our fine bone china Colne Engaine mugs are now at the bargain price of only £5.50! Grab yourself a few for fabulous Christmas gifts. We’re well underway with our plans for our Christmas Fayre. Please do come along and support our school and outside stall holders. We’ll have lots of stalls of fun for children and adults alike. Our consistently fabulous Father Christmas in his fabulous Grotto. The date for your diary is 6th December and we’ll be open for business from 3.15 (school’s out) until 5pm. We hope to see lots of fellow villagers coming along to pick up a prize or an interesting gift. We’re open to all (although best to avoid the first half hour as it’s FULL of EXTREMELY EXCITABLE children). Christmas is coming!!!! Grace Carey (FACES Secretary) [email protected] 01787 220219
