On the left hand side, at house no. 5, you will find the guest reception ( Gästeanmeldung) . This is where you will get the key to your room . Or, coming from the station, go past Allee Gottfried-Wilhelm-Lehmann-Straße (since it is a one-way street), then turn right onto Eduard-Scheve-Allee and follow the same instructions as above. Plane: • Airport Berlin-Tegel (TXL) [compare “Area Map Tegel Airport.pdf”] Best option: At a BVG ticketing machine or sales counter or directly from the bus driver, purchase a single fare ticket for the Berlin BC zones (“Einzelfahrausweis Berlin BC – Regeltarif”) for EUR 2.50. The ticket lasts you for 2 hours and is good for one direction; make sure it is validated as you board the bus. Just outside the terminal building (at the bus platforms # 3 or #4, respectively), take the bus no. X9 or 109 to “U Jakob-Kaiser-Platz”. It is only a 5 minute ride. Then take the underground line U7 toward “Rathaus Spandau” all the way to the last stop of the line. Change towards the railway station “Berlin-Spandau” by following the signs, and then take the train (see below). Alternative route (simpler but longer): Purchase a single fare ticket at a BVG sales counter, ticketing machine or on the bus for the Berlin ABC zones (“Einzelfahrausweis Berlin ABC – Regeltarif”) for EUR 2.80 (valid until Elstal; make sure it is validated as you board the bus). Take bus no. X9 to “Zoologischer Garten” (terminus) at the bus platform #3. It goes every 10 minutes; travel time is 15 minutes. Then take the train (see below). • Airport Berlin-Schönefeld (SXF) [compare “Area Map Schönefeld Airport.pdf”] Purchase a single fare ticket at a S-Bahn, BVG or VBB sales counter or ticketing machine for the Berlin ABC zones (“Einzelfahrausweis Berlin ABC – Regeltarif”) for EUR 2.80 (valid until Elstal; make sure the ticket is validated before you board the train). Then follow the signs to the train station (you will pass through an outside walk-way connecting the terminal building with the train station) and take one of two regional trains toward the centre of Berlin: You can take RB 14 to “Nauen” at 55 minutes past the hour and get off at “Berlin-Spandau”. Travel time is a little over 40 minutes. Alternatively, take RE 7 to “Roßlau” at 25 minutes past the hour and get off at “Berlin Zoologischer Garten”. Travel time is about 34 minutes. No matter which of the two trains you took, stay at your platform and follow the directions below for train . Version: July 2010 Directions to EBM International in Elstal Page 1 Train: Coming from Berlin, trains to Elstal are usually twice per hour Monday through Friday. On Saturday and Sunday once per hour: RE 2 and RB 13 (direction: “Rathenow” or “Wustermark”, respectively). The train RE 2 is even direct from Berlin-Ostbahnhof (via Alexanderplatz, Friedrichstr., Zoologischer Garten, Spandau), while train RB 13 starts in Berlin-Spandau. Departures from Berlin-Spandau to Elstal: RE2 : 13 minutes past the hour. RB13 (only Mon-Fri) : every hour at minute :27 from 05:27 to 08:27, once at 13:44, and then at minute :47 from 14:47 until 19:47. Travel time: 11-13 minutes. Departures from Berlin-Zoologischer Garten to Elstal: Take train RE2 to „Rathenow“, which goes once per hour (always at minute :04), usually from platform #4. This is a direct connection. Arrival in Elstal: 24 minutes past the hour. To get to EBM, take the first road on the right (Gottfried- Wilhelm-Lehmann-Straße); we are on the left side at house number 4. To get the key to your room , go to the guest reception ( Gästeanmeldung ), Eduard-Scheve-Allee 5 (see campus map). • Station Naming
STATION NAMING by Antony Badsey-Ellis Different metro systems have taken different approaches to naming their stations over time, and this article looks briefly at how they have gone about this. LONDON Historically, London was centred on the City, and outside this were a number of villages. Since mediæval times, as London grew the villages were absorbed, but for many of them their names lived on as districts of London. When stations were built they often took the name of the district that they served. Example of this include Westminster, Hammersmith, Paddington, Knightsbridge. In the more densely-packed centre of London that developed around the West End, the City, and the region in between, there were insufficient districts for the names to obvious as to where the station was located, and so street names were chosen. These were generally perpendicular to the railway line – fine for a station that only served one line, such as Baker Street, but caused problems when a second railway was built that followed the street that had given its name to the first. An example of this is when the Central London Railway built a station at Tottenham Court Road, and the Hampstead Tube then added interchange platforms but called their station Oxford Street. Although both companies were following the same practice, it was highly confusing for passengers, and within a year the Hampstead renamed their platforms to match those of the CLR. (This meant that they had to rename their station to the north, which they had confusingly opened as Tottenham Court Road – it became Goodge Street, which was a more logical name, although less well known).
