Times-Picayune/NOLA.com: “Piano players rarely ever play together? During New Orleans Jazz Fest they do” Brett Anderson, May 6, 2014

“New Orleans during Jazz Fest tends to offer countless exceptions to this unofficial rule about piano playing. I haven't attended Piano Night, WWOZ's annual celebration of the New Orleans piano tradition, in several years. The concert is held between Jazz Fest weekends, and in years past I've seen Piano Night players lay hands on the keys of the same piano at the same time.”

Times-Picayune/NOLA.com: “Funeral arrangements announced for Golden Star Hunters Big Chief Larry Bannock” Alison Fensterstock, May 6, 2014

“Funeral arrangements have been announced for Larry Bannock, Big Chief of the Golden Star Hunters Mardi Gras Indians. Bannock, who began masking as Spy Boy for the gang in the 1950s, passed away April 30, just days after appearing at the 2014 New Orleans Jazz Fest, radio station WWOZ reported on its website.”

Gambit/BestOfNewOrleans.com: “Off the wall beers honor Larry Hartzog” Nora McGunnigle, May 5, 2014

“Larry Hartzog was an avid home brewer and fan of WWOZ… In 2012, his fellow home brewers paid tribute to him by throwing the first Larry Hartzog Twisted Beer Fest as a fundraiser at the Mellow Mushroom in Covington to benefit his favorite cause, supporting WWOZ 90.7 FM, New Orleans' community radio station.”

“This year, 35 home brews from Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas were submitted for the Larry Fest Twisted Beer Competition, and the judging is sanctioned by the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP).

“For a $15 donation, attendees can sample 35 home-brewed beers at the festival, which begins at 4 p.m. May 10 at the Mellow Mushroom (1645 Highway 190, suite 100, Covington, 985-327-5407; www.mellowmushroom.com). Red Wolf Brass Band and Guitar Slim Jr. will perform.”

The expanded record store sits underneath the second-floor offices of Offbeat magazine, a music, nightlife, and culture journal that is to the printed page what WWOZ is to the airwaves. Altogether it’s an impressive little music-geek compound.”

Held April 28 at the House of Blues, Piano Night featured more than 25 pianists, some solo, some accompanied by other musicians performing jazz, blues and honky-tonk. On the House of Blues main stage, Ellis Marsalis performed original compositions and classics (accompanied by Roland Guerin on bass, Stephen Gordon on drums). “Before Hurricane Katrina, the foundation distributed around $100,000 in grants to community cultural organizations every two years. Now, the foundation gives away close to $500,000 annually - a tenfold increase. The foundation also spends around $250,000 to produce four free festivals: the Crescent City Blues & Barbecue Festival, the Congo Square New World Rhythms Festival, the Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Festival and the Treme Creole Gumbo Festival. Other programs include the free Jazz Journey concert series, the Tom Dent lecture series, and the Sync Up music business conference, staged at the New Orleans Museum of Art on the mornings of Jazz Fest weekends. The foundation also provides hundreds of thousands of dollars to WWOZ-FM, which it owns, and supports the Don ‘Moose’ Jamison Heritage School of Music.”

“Slidell resident Hodges Mercer said he didn’t think twice before spending $500 for all seven days of Jazz Fest. He spent the same amount last year on a single ticket to see the Rolling Stones in concert in Philadelphia. He plans to spend three days drinking Abita beer and watching Santana, Eric Clapton and Lyle Lovett play. His wife will use the special-admission Brass Pass, purchased from WWOZ Radio, on the festival’s other four days. ‘I still think it’s a good value,’ he said. ‘I get an incredible assortment of musicians, musical types and musical experiences that I can’t get anywhere else.’

“The relationship between independent radio and record shops was similarly stressed at Louisiana Music Factory’s new Frenchmen Street location. The store now boasts a handsome counter-space, which serves as the official shop for beloved local station WWOZ (90.7 FM). ‘I created the shop, and Barry [Louisiana Music Factory’s owner] donated the space,’ said Suzanne Roberge, manager of the newly christened Swamp Shop, WWOZ's retail store located inside Louisiana Music Factory, which sells merchandise such as t-shirts, CDs and memberships. ‘We have always had an awesome relationship with the Louisiana Music Factory for years, and we promote the hell out of them. The New Orleans Advocate/TheNewOrleansAdvocate.com: “Ellis Marsalis headlines Piano Night” John Wirt, April 24, 2014

“Jazz pianist, composer and music educator Ellis Marsalis headlines WWOZ-FM’s 26th annual Piano Night. Taking place Monday, Piano Night features five hours of continuous keyboard performances in three House of Blues venues.

Piano Night is a major fundraiser for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival Foundation-linked WWOZ. Featuring a host of music-loving volunteer DJs, the community radio station broadcasts recordings by local artists and an array of music genres not aired by commercial stations.

Marsalis, New Orleans’ 79-year-old modern-jazz piano master and patriarch of the Marsalis family of jazz musicians, is a loyal WWOZ listener. He’s played for Piano Night many times. ‘I feel good about it,’ he said of being this year’s Piano Night honoree. ‘It’s always good when people in your hometown decide to give you an honor.’
