I drove all night, crept in your room Woke you from your sleep to make love to you Is that all right? I drove all night... What in this world keeps us from falling apart? No matter where I go I hear the beating of our one heart I think about you when the night is cold and dark Uh-huh, yeah No one can move me the way that you do Nothing erases this feeling between me and you … ooh ... I drove all night to get to you … (the song fades out a little earlier than in the recorded version on this line) … Tail credits: Crane off Jack and Ruby kissing, to up above where Mack and Jack in the signwriting plane have carved a sign saying “I love you” in the sky. Crane back down on to the couple, as they drive off in their open top jeep and Jack asks “Right, where are we going?” Ruby asks “Am I in your next book?” “Ah no”, says Jack, and Ruby says “Yes I am” as the jeep disappears down the dirt road. “No, you’re not, ask Lance,” he replies. “Lance?” she asks, and the dog barks. “See!?” Ruby says. Jack: “Yeah, but one bark is a no…” Ruby: “Bullshit! Lance?” The dog barks once. Jack, chuckling: “See?” Ruby: “He said yes …” Jack: “No, no, he said no. I told you, one bark is a no!” Ruby: “Is that right, Lance?” The dog barks twice. Ruby, laughing: “Ha, ha, I was right!” Jack: “Yes, Ruby, you always are.” While this banter has been going on, a line from the end credits song has crept in … This is ‘She’s Taken My Words’ (The Theme from Paperback Hero), performed by Human Nature: The opening line is hidden under the banter, but sounds like … I’m rolling ahead and ride forever …(?) After Jack’s last line about Ruby always being right, the song kicks into full gear over black, as end credits roll: ...The dusty red can clear away your mind There’s no need for better Now she’s there when all of my thoughts have gone The scent of her hair Can carry me along There’s no need for better Now paperback fairytales Are nothing compared to falling for her How can I stand and watch her walk away? When she’s taken my heart She’s taken my soul And without my noticing She’s taken my words Oh, oh … Road goes on And time teaches everyone Once love’s gone It tears a piece inside … So how can I leave her? Oh, paperback fairytales Are nothing compared to falling for her I’ll never turn and let her walk away She’s taken everything Yeah, she’s taken my heart She’s taken my soul And without my noticing She’s taken my words She’s taken my time She’s touched me deep inside And without my noticing She’s taken my words I cherish the moment I look in her eyes Time on my hands seems to pass like the skies I know her heart isn’t mine ‘Cause she’s taken over Oooh oooh … aaah aaah She … she’s taken my heart She’s taken my soul She’s taken my words She’s taken everything ... She’s taken my heart She’s taken my soul And without my noticing … She’s taken my words She’s taken my time She’s touched me deep inside … Without my noticing … (song begins slow fade out) Oh yeah yeah, she’s oh, taken my soul She’s taken my soul ... This in the Sunday Age, 26th April 1998: This in the Sunday Age, 12th July 1998: Dallwitz was interviewed by Rob Walker for Australian Musician, Issue 17, autumn 1999, about the time of this period in his career. The original site is no longer active, but the interview could be found at the WM here: Walker: Melbourne based composer, Burkhard Dallwitz, was recently awarded a prestigious Golden Globe Award in Hollywood for his music score to Australian director Peter Weir's film 'The Truman Show'. He got the nod over Hollywood luminaries like Hans Zimmer, Randy Newman, John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. Bemoaning the fact that a little known composer from Australia had been plucked from obscurity, Randy Newman was heard to be asking How do we put him back there! Burkhard kindly found some time to speak to Australian Musician's Rob Walker soon after his triumphant return home. Dallwitz arrived in Australia from Germany 20 years ago with the intention of taking an extended working holiday, he never left.
