Singles Semi-Finals ASB CLASSIC: DAY 5 MEDIA NOTES Friday, January 15, 2016 ASB Tennis Arena, Auckland, New Zealand | January 11-16, 2016 (Saturday Final) Draw: S-28, D-16 | Prize Money: $463,520 | Surface: Outdoor Hard ATP Info: Tournament Info: ATP PR & Marketing: www.ATPWorldTour.com www.asbclassic.co.nz Mark Epps [email protected] Twitter: @ATPWorldTour @ASB_Classic Press Room: +64 2187 5209 Facebook: facebook.com/ATPWorldTour facebook.com/nzfestivaloftennis UPSET-MINDED SOCK, BAUTISTA AGUT TAKE ON TOP 2 SEEDS IN SEMIS SEMI-FINAL PREVIEW: Coming off quarter-final upsets, Jack Sock and Roberto Bautista Agut face the Top 2 seeds on Friday for the chance to reach the ASB Classic championship match. Sock, the World No. 26, knocked off 12th-ranked Kevin Anderson on Thursday to earn his 10th win over a Top 20 player since the start of the 2015 season – most of any player not ranked in the Top 20. However, none of those victories by Sock came against a Top 10 player. The 23-year-old American attempts to end a nine-match losing streak against Top 10 opponents when he meets four-time champion and World No. 8 David Ferrer in the semi-finals on Friday. It’s been a while since Bautista Agut beat a Top 10 player as well. The 25th-ranked Spaniard is 0- 17 against Top 10 opponents since stunning then-No. 5 Tomas Berdych at 2014 ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells. Bautista Agut got as close to defeating a Top 10 player as you can get on Thursday when he eliminated 11th-ranked John Isner, the 2010 and 2014 Auckland champion. In the semi-finals, Bautista Agut can do one better when he plays World No. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. A Kiwi is assured of a spot in the Auckland doubles final, with New Zealand’s Marcus Daniell, Artem Sitak and Michael Venus contesting one of Friday’s semi-finals. Daniell and Sitak, the reigning Montpellier champions, will face Venus and Mate Pavic of Croatia, the reigning Nice champions. In the other doubles semi-final, Americans Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky meet Austrians Julian Knowle and Oliver Marach. The conference had a tennis-specific set up as well as innovative tennis medicine content with keynote presentations, break out sessions, and on-court sessions. Thanks to Connor Sport Court, there were 2 court surfaces that were laid down inside the Life University gymnasium for very real on court demonstrations. Some of the participants (and even speakers) found some time to even play out some points and warm up with the foam balls and rackets provided! This conference was also supported by Ortho Atlanta, a local orthopae- dic group that serves as the official medical providers for the Atlanta ATP Championships as well as the Australian Open Wildcard tournament. The International Tennis Performance Association (ITPA), was an- other key contributor, and they also helped to arrange an on court stroke technique evaluation for coaches in conjunction with Georgia Professional Tennis Association (GPTA), and STMS one day prior to the main STMS-USTA conference. Dr. Ben Kibler, Dr. Mark Kovacs, and myself provided an enthusiastic audience of many local tennis professionals, coaches, and some medical providers some specific modifications of strokes for junior elite players as well as adult players.

  • Game, Set, Watched: Governance, Social Control and Surveillance in Professional Tennis
GAME, SET, WATCHED: GOVERNANCE, SOCIAL CONTROL AND SURVEILLANCE IN PROFESSIONAL TENNIS By Marie-Pier Guay A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada November, 2013 Copyright © Marie-Pier Guay, 2013 Abstract Contrary to many major sporting leagues such as the NHL, NFL, NBA, and MLB, or the Olympic Games as a whole, the professional tennis industry has not been individually scrutinized in terms of governance, social control, and surveillance practices. This thesis presents an in-depth account of the major governing bodies of the professional tennis circuit with the aim of examining how they govern, control, constrain, and practice surveillance on tennis athletes and their bodies. Foucault’s major theoretical concepts of disciplinary power, governmentality, and bio-power are found relevant today and can be enhanced by Rose’s ethico-politics model and Haggerty and Ericson’s surveillant assemblage. However, it is also shown how Foucault, Rose, and Haggerty and Ericson’s different accounts of “modes of governing” perpetuate sociological predicaments of professional tennis players within late capitalism. These modes of surveillance are founded on a meritocracy based on the ATP and WTA rankings systems. A player’s ranking affects how he or she is governed, surveilled, controlled, and even punished. Despite ostensibly promoting tennis athletes’ health protection and wellbeing, the systems of surveillance, governance, and control rely on a biased and capitalistically-driven meritocracy that actually jeopardizes athletes’ health and contributes to social class divisions, socio- economic inequalities, gender discrimination, and media pressure.
