Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge Vol. 10 (2), April 2011, pp. 358-361 Herbal remedies used against arthritis in Kishtwar High Altitude National Park Satish Kumar * & Irshad Ahmed Hamal Department of Botany, University of Jammu, Jammu E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] Received 28.01.09; revised 04.05.10 Arthritis literally meaning inflammation of joints is a common ailment of cold regions caused by wear and tear on the articular cartilage (Osteoarthritis) through the natural ageing process, constant use, trauma or one of number of inflammatory processes. Regardless of the cause, the joints become inflamed, causing swelling, pain and stiffness. Although there is no cure for most forms of the arthritis, various phyto-therapies can help patients manage symptoms and improve their over all quality of life. The present communication deals with traditional remedies used against arthritis by indigenous populace in Kishtwar High Altitude National Park. During the course of study it was observed that the local populace in the Kishtwar High Altitude National Park use 13 different herbal treatments involving 14 plants/plant parts for arthritis but the choice and frequency of use for herbs is influenced by many factors such as season of the year, accessibility and knowledge of other species. However, not all areas of the Himalayas are well studied. In particular, studies on ethnobotanical uses of plants from the Eastern Himalayas are rare and lacking for many tribes. Past studies primarily focused on listing plants name and their traditional medicinal uses. However, studies on traditional ethnopharmacological practices on medicine preparation had not yet been reported in published literature from the Eastern Himalaya. In this study, we are reporting the first time ethnopharmacological used 24 medicines, their procedures of preparation and listed 53 plant species used for those medicines for Monpa tribe. -

The National Park shares a natural boundary ÿKalipokhri with Nepal on the west and with Sikkim on the north. The international border between India and Nepal is identified by a 52 Kaiyakatta km road running from Phalut (3,650 m) down to Manebhanjyang ÿairibas ÿDhotrey (1,920 m). The National Park is an Important Bird Area and an IUCN Tonglu Category II Protected Area. RATA Ashoka Trust for Research in FOUNDATION Ecology and the Environment History The Singalila area in Darjeeling was purchased by the British Government from Sibbim Durbar in 1882, and notified a Reserve Forest under the Indian Forest Act 1878. It was notified as a National Parb in 1992 and was also officially opened up for tourism. However even before this, Singalila has a history of receiving visitors. Some of the I prominent visitors include Sir Joseph Dalton Hoober - one of the greatest British **" y '* botanists and explorers in 1883; Heinrich Harrer author of "Seven Vears in Tibet" visited Singalila several times. Singalila range used to be a regular route for expeditions to Kanchenjunga. -

In the garden, flowers, butterflies and bees are revelling in the sunshine and the house martins, nesting in our eaves, are giving flying displays that surpass those of the Red Arrows. There is an emphasis ( almost a fashion) in horticultural circles at the moment on wild life gardening and wild flower meadows. I have always felt that alpines are the wild flowers of the mountains, whether growing in alpine meadows or nestling in among the rocks. Our Society aims to give an appreciation and thus the protection and conservation of wild flowers and plants all over the world. Perhaps you have just picked up this Newsletter and are new to the Society but whether you have a window pot or a few acres you would be very welcome to join the group and find out how much pleasure, in many different ways, these mountain wild flowers can bring. My thanks to our contributors this year who illustrate how varied our interest in plants can be. Not only did the Taylors give us a wonderful lecture and hands-on demonstration last November but kindly followed it up with an article for the Newsletter, and I hope that many of you, like me, have two healthy little pots of lily seedlings thanks to their generous gift of seeds. -

Srivastava Botanical Survey of India, Kolkata-700064 *Author for Correspondence ABSTRACT Present studies have revealed the ocuurence of 121species and 29 varieties belonging to 12 genera in India. Nomenclature, flowering/ fruinting period, habit, habitat, distribution and uses are given. Keys to the genera/species and varieties are also given. Keywords: Polygonaceae, India INTRODUCTION Polygonaceae-a cosmopolitan family of dicotyledonous angiosperms is also known as the knotweed family or smartweed-buckwheat family. The name of the family is based on the „Type genus‟ Polygonum, and was first used by Antoine Laurent de Jussieu in 1789 in his book, Genera Plantarum. The name is derived from Greekwords viz., ‟poly’ (means many) and „goni‟ (means knee or joint) refering to the many swollen nodes on the stem/ branches. Many species are economically important (medicinal/edible/ornamental etc). Fruits of Coccoloba uviferawhich is commonly known as sea grape, are eaten and a jelly made from it is sold commercially in Florida (USA). Seeds of 2 species of Fagopyrum commonly known as „buckwheat‟yiled flour.Leaves of Rumex acetosa (common sorrel) are eaten in salads or as a potherb. Many species of Emex, Polygonum (s.l.) and Rumex are the weeds. Present studies were under taken under Flora of India Project‟of Botanical Survey of India.Brief taxonomic account consisting of nomenclature, common/vernacular names, flowering/fruiting period, habit, habitat, distribution and uses (wherever known) of the recorded taxa are given in this paper. -

Among the various traditional treatments that have been widely studied and explored for their potential therapeutic benefits, kefir, a fermented beverage, demonstrates a broad spectrum of pharmacological properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and healing activities. These health-promoting properties of kefir vary among the kefir cultures found at the different part of the world as different media and culture conditions are used for kefir maintenance and fermentation. Methods: This study investigated the microbial composition and readily found bioactive compounds in water kefir fermented in Malaysia using 16S rRNA microbiome and UHPLC sequencing approaches. The toxicity effects of the kefir water administration in BALB/c mice were analysed based on the mice survival, body weight index, biochemistry profile, and histopathological changes. The antioxidant activities were evaluated using SOD, FRAP, and NO assays. Results: The 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing revealed the most abundant species found in the water kefir was Lactobacillus hilgardii followed by Lactobacillus harbinensis, Acetobacter lovaniensis, Lactobacillus satsumensis, Acetobacter tropicalis, Lactobacillus zeae, and Oenococcus oeni.
