Transfer Timeline for High School Seniors The California community college system provides an option for students to complete up to two years of college coursework before transfer. If you are currently in high school and plan to attend community college before transferring to Mills College, you may use the information below to assist with planning. Remember that you are able to transfer to Mills College at any time—there is no minimum number of units required to transfer, and core (general education) courses can be completed at Mills.

Check the General Education Matrix on the next page and the Major Articulation tables on the following pages to make sure the classes you are taking will transfer. Your community college counselor AND your Mills College admission counselor can help if you have any questions.

Timeframe Suggested Action High School Research local community colleges. All community colleges offer the Senior Year – Fall opportunity to complete general education courses, but each has special strengths: Is there an honors program? Do they offer multiple classes in your area of interest? Is there a strong campus culture with activities you might participate in?

High School Fill out the application form at your community college and arrange to take Senior Year – Spring any needed placement exams. Meet with a community college counselor and make an academic plan based on when you plan to transfer to Mills College. Consider summer classes.

Summer After High School Graduation 1-2 classes. If you tested into any pre-college work in math or English, focus on that. Otherwise, use this as a time to begin taking general education and elective courses.

College First Year – Fall 4 classes. Prioritize any needed pre-college work. Mills College advisors recommend 1 English course, 1 additional general education course, 1 course in your area of interest, and 1 elective course.

College First Year – Spring Mills College advisors recommend 1 English course, 2 general education courses, and 1 elective course.

College First Year – Summer 2-3 courses. Check in with your Mills College admissions counselor to review transcripts and make sure you are still on track to transfer.

College Second Year – Fall and Spring Continue to take 4 classes per term, working to complete general education requirements and explore your area of interest. In December, reach out to your Mills College admission counselor to begin planning your application process. Make sure to submit your application by the March 1 Priority Deadline for scholarship consideration.

General Education Matrix for Transfer Students Many of the Mills College core curriculum requirements can be fulfilled using transfer credits. To assist students transferring from the California community college system, Mills has constructed our core curriculum requirements around the IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) used by the UC and CSU systems.

• Students who have NOT completed IGETC for UC and CSU can use the table below to assist with planning. • Students who have completed IGETC for UC and CSU have completed the Mills College core requirements, with the exception of a Race, Gender and Power class. This course must be completed at Mills. • Students who are transferring from an out-of-state community college or from another four-year institution are encouraged to contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and make an appointment for an unofficial transfer of credit evaluation to review their transcripts.

How to Apply to Mills College We strive to make the application process as straightforward and accessible as possible. You may apply to Mills College directly or by using the Common Application. Go to www.mills.edu/applyundergrad to start your application.

Frequently Asked Questions ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Do I need a certain GPA or a minimum number of transfer units? There is no minimum GPA required for admission to Mills College. Our application process is holistic, so we consider many factors beyond GPA, such as your writing skills, strength of curriculum, and recommendations. Strong transfer applicants will have a 3.0 GPA or higher in college-level, transferable coursework. We recommend that you take general education courses, such as mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, history, English, and foreign languages. You can apply for transfer admission after just one semester of college coursework; we do not require a minimum number of course units.

Do transfer students need to submit a high school transcript or midterm/current grades? Transfer students who have completed fewer than 24 transferable semester units will need to submit a high school transcript with proof of your high school graduation. If you did not graduate from high school, you will need to submit a GED or a state-approved high school proficiency exam. In certain cases, we may ask you to send your midterm or current grades to help us better evaluate your application.

Do you require admission interviews? Interviews aren’t required, but we highly recommend them to help you learn about all that Mills has to offer. This is also a great way for you to meet one of our admission counselors who can help you navigate the admission process. We offer interviews on campus, via Skype or FaceTime, and at select off-campus locations throughout the year.

Can I apply for admission and receive financial aid if I am an undocumented or AB 540 student? Yes, undocumented or AB 540 students are invited to apply for admission to Mills College. All Mills applicants are considered for our merit scholarships and eligible to apply for need-based scholarships from Mills College.

TRANSFER CREDIT Can I get college credit at Mills using my scores from Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams? Yes, you can obtain college credit towards your degree by taking AP and IB exams. Generally, AP exam scores of 4 or 5 can earn you up to one year of credit in the exam’s subject area. Higher-level IB exam scores of 5, 6, and 7 can earn you one or two course credits. Please visit the online undergraduate catalog for additional information.

What is the maximum number of units Mills College will accept for transfer credit? If you’re coming from another four-year institution, you can transfer up to 77 semester units or 110 quarter units. From a community college, you can transfer a maximum of 67 semester units or 100 quarter units.

How will I know which of my courses will be accepted for transfer credit? Once admitted to Mills College, you will receive an official transfer of credit report online through our Registrar’s Office. You will receive a final transfer of credit report after submitting your final college transcript. Generally, we offer transfer credit for liberal arts courses that are similar in content and depth to courses available at Mills. In the case of California community college courses, we usually offer credit if the courses are accepted for credit by the UC system.

How many students apply to Mills College as transfer students? The number varies each year; however, we usually receive around 300 transfer applications for fall and 100 transfer applications for spring. Transfer students make up about a third of our overall student body.
