This flood is engulfing ordinary citizens who simply try to live normal lives according to their faith and conscience. It is eroding the bedrock on which stand vital American institutions such as government, education, the military, business, houses of worship, and charity. It has the potential to wash away the ground that supports our other rights, including freedom of speech, press, assembly, and government by consent of the people. Since 2012, First Liberty Institute (formerly Liberty Institute) has documented and publicized this rising tide of hostility to religion in America. First Liberty Institute is the largest legal organization in America with the exclusive mission of protecting religious freedom for all our citizens. So it is important for us to know the scope of the problem, and we are glad to share what we learn with our fellow Americans, including our nation’s leaders in Congress and beyond. In this 2016 edition of our annual study Undeniable: The Survey of Hostility to Religion in America, First Liberty Institute’s team of researchers, led by a Harvard-trained constitutional attorney, documents a continuing increase in the number of incidents hostile toward religion. The flood is a national problem. Every American should share in the concern for at least three reasons: First, individuals and families are being hurt. The attacks you will read about in these pages are sweeping away small businesses, careers, and ministries. Behind the legalities are tears, anguish, and the denial of basic human tolerance, compassion, and common decency. It’s time for a national rejection of politically correct cruelty based on discrimination against traditional American forms of faith. 5 Undeniable: The Survey of Hostility to Religion in America Second, the attacks injure us all. The animus toward religion springs from a relatively small but powerful sector of society composed of influential people and organizations who consider active faith as irrelevant at best, and dangerous to essential social progress at worst. As a result of such hostility to religion: • Good employees are being unlawfully fired, and productive businesses recklessly harmed; • Valuable public servants are being aggressively driven from their fields; • Ministries, churches, and chaplains are being threatened or restricted from fulfilling their spiritual callings. The flood is curtailing help for students, the elderly, the sick, the poor, orphans, addicts, and the homeless. It is even endangering efforts to show compassion and comfort to current and former members of our military, jeopardizing morale and thus our national security. One must ask: Is America prepared to sacrifice the benefits of open religious activity on the altar of modern political correctness? Noted social historian Dr. Rodney Stark of Baylor University undertook a comprehensive analysis of the positive impact of religion in the United States in reducing crime, improving education, bettering mental and physical health, increasing employment, and reducing welfare. He conservatively estimated the benefit to be at least $2.67 trillion per year.1 Other scholars confirm this overall assertion. Can we afford to ignore such research and toss away the blessings of free religious exercise? Third, freedom of religion is foundational to all other freedoms. From the beginning of the colonies and continuing until today, immigrants came to America for religious freedom. Freedom of religious conscience is part of a person’s core identity, and embedded in America’s cultural DNA. Further, religious freedom is in the First Amendment because all other freedoms rest upon it. Without the concept of a higher authority to make government accountable to unchanging principles of justice, all other freedoms are at risk of being violated, redefined, or revoked by government. As the Declaration of Independence says, all men are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights . That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men.” 1 Stark, Rodney, America’s Blessings (West Conshohocken, PA, Templeton Press, 2012, Kindle ed. 85%) 6 Hostility to Religion Harms Every American The good news is that the vast majority of the hostility to religion you will read in this survey is unlawful. It succeeds only because of its own bluff and the passivity of its victims. Hostility to religion can be defeated in the legal system—but only if challenged by Americans like you. The hostility is growing in the areas of: • The “Public Arena” of public places, government, and the workplace. • The “Schoolhouse” of education, from K–12 through higher academia. • “Churches and Ministries,” in which one might expect hostility to be the least. • The “Military,” which includes our service members, veterans, and their memorials. More than 1,200 cases are documented in this 2016 edition of Undeniable, yet this is not an exhaustive accounting. These cases include past years’ cases but show a clear expansion during this past year. Quantitatively and qualitatively, the hostility is undeniable. And it is dangerous. Details The bombs were placed on trains plying on the western line of the suburban ("local") train network, which forms the backbone of the city's transport network.     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Saturday, July 23, 2011 WORLD TRADE CENTER CROSS IS INSTALLED IN 9/11 MEMORIAL MUSEUM Ceremony Commemorates the Intersecting Steel Found by 9/11 Recovery Workers The National September 11 Memorial & Museum today announced that the intersecting steel beam that came to be known as the World Trade Center Cross will be lowered by crane into the 9/11 Memorial Museum. First encountered by construction worker Frank Silecchia in the vicinity of where 6 World Trade Center had stood, the 17-foot-tall Cross became an icon of hope and comfort throughout the recovery effort in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Prior to installation in the Museum, Father Brian Jordan gave the Cross a ceremonial blessing this morning at Zuccotti Park, near the World Trade Center site. Father Jordan, a Franciscan priest who had been ministering to workers and blessing human remains recovered at the site, comforted rescue and recovery workers after the 9/11 attacks. Throughout the recovery period, Jordan spent Sunday after Sunday holding mass and offering communion at the base of the Cross. After the blessing at Zuccotti Park, the Cross was transported onto the WTC site and lowered into its permanent setting inside the Museum, which will open to the public in 2012. “The World Trade Center Cross is an important part of our commitment to bring back the authentic physical reminders that tell the history of 9/11 in a way nothing else could,” 9/11 Memorial President Joe Daniels said. “Its return is a symbol of the progress on the Memorial & Museum

    Keynote Address for 12th Anniversary of 9/11 Grossmont Community College Jake Jacoby, MD Good morning, on this the 12th Anniversary of the Terrorist Attacks on America, in New York City, in Arlington County, VA at the Pentagon, and in the skies of our Homeland. I would like to thank the Administration of Grossmont Community College, and in particular Mr. Donald Harrison, Acting Director for College and Community Relations, and Professor Jeff Lehman, Dept of Chemistry, for inviting me to share some thoughts with you at this gathering to commemorate one of the most repugnant and horrific events of our lives. I was asked to speak as one of the many people who responded when called, to assist in the medical needs of responders and support personnel during the response and recovery phases of the WTC Attack. As a little bit of background, I have been an Emergency Medicine physician for over 30 years. In 1991, I was asked to start a Disaster Medical Assistance Team here in San Diego, otherwise known in our world as a DMAT. It is a team of physicians, nurses, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, respiratory therapists, communications, security and logistics officers, and administrative personnel with the mission of responding to disasters and special security events to provide medical care, when needed. Since then, our team has been asked by our Federal Government to respond to nearly 2 dozen disasters, such as the Northridge Earthquake, Floods in the Midwest; multiple Tropical Storms and hurricanes, including Hurricane Katrina, and most recently, Hurricane Sandy. The Terrorist Attacks on America on September 11, 2001 was one of those disasters.

The Mass took place after days of rain and local flooding, and many in the congregation faced long detours just to arrive at the cathedral in the heart of the City of Brotherly Love. Outside the cathedral, the struggles the archdiocese has faced in recent months were very apparent. A block away, Catholic high school teachers were picketing during the second day of their strike; in front of the cathedral, while members of the Neocatechume- nal Way sang and played guitars and drums, a group of people protesting clergy abuse marched silently, holding aloft signs as a stinging reminder of the recent grand jury report that accused archdiocese officials of failing to pre- vent abuse of children.

    St. Peter’s Church “Mother Church of Old Catholic New York” New York State’s first Roman Catholic parish established in 1785 Welcome St. Peter’s Church was, “truly the rock upon which the present Archdiocese of New York with its hundreds of churches, schools and other institutions were founded”, wrote Leo Raymond Ryan. St. Peter’s Church was a center of early American Catholicism, established five years before the establishment of the present day United States government. St. Peter’s Church is the first Roman Catholic parish in New York State and predates the first Bishopric in the United States. The parish served as a safe haven for needy immigrants, New Yorkers suffering during the yellow fever epidemic, and downtown neighbors in the aftermath of 9/11. During her long history, the parish became connected to many admirable and influential Catholic New Yorkers including our first American saint, Elizabeth Ann Seton, and several in line for sainthood. 2 Our History EARLY NEW YORK CATHOLIC COMMUNITY During English rule, Catholic worship was prohibited. Following the Revolutionary War, New York City served as temporary capitol of the newly-independent United States. This prominence brought many foreign ambassadors and businessmen to the city, some of whom were Catholic, as were several members of Congress. A small group of Catholic city residents began attending Mass privately at the home of Don Diego de Gardoqui, the ambassador of Spain. Father Farmer, a pioneer and tireless missionary tended to the beginning flock. As the congregation grew, they launched a plan to build a church of their own, under the leadership of Father Whelan, a member of the Capuchin Order from Ireland.
