The NSIC, the Great American Conference (GAC) and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) make up the NCAA Central Region again this year. The top eight teams the region will advance to the NCAA region tournament on March 14-15, 17. Automatic bids are granted to the winners of the NSIC, GAC and MIAA postseason tournaments, with the remaining five spots are awarded on an at-large basis. The NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Show is set for 9 p.m. on March 9. The NCAA Elite 8 will take place on March 25-26 and 28 at Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pa. 2013-14 NSIC Women’s Basketball Notes AUGUSTANA COLLEGE - Augustana women’s basketball season came to a close on Saturday as Northern State held on late to win 67-62, eliminating the Vikings from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health Women’s Basketball Tournament. Augustana finished up the year 16-12 with loss, while the Wolves improved to 23-5 with the victory. The Vikings erased a 16-point halftime lead late in the game, tying the contest up with just 40 seconds left. NSIC Defensive Player of the Year Emily Schulte ended with eight points and a career-high nine assists in her final game as a Viking. Schulte also recorded five steals on the day.

BEMIDJI STATE - The Beavers fell 72-42 at No. 9 Wayne State College Feb. 26 in the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/ Sanford Health Tournament. The Beavers ended the season with a 9-18 overall record, 5-17 in NSIC play. The NSIC doled out its annual awards Feb. 27 and in the process honored seniors Morgan Lee (G, Hayward, Wis.) and Kate Warmack (C, East Grand Forks, Minn.) to the All-NSIC Second Team, while Hanna Zerr (G, Shakopee, Minn.) was recognized as an All-NSIC Freshman Team member. Lee concluded the 22-game league season seventh in free throw percentage (86.2%), eighth in scoring (16 ppg) and 10th in 3-pointers made (45, 2.1 pg). Warmack finished the conference season second in blocks (50, 2.3 bpg), fourth in field goal percentage (52.6%), sixth in rebounding (9.3 rpg) and 15th in scoring (15.3 ppg). Zerr became the first member of the BSU women’s basketball team to earn All-NSIC Freshman Team honors since current senior Jessie Althoff (F, Becker, Minn.) did so in 2009-10. The last time the Beavers had three players earn all-conference recognition in the same season was 2007-08.

CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL - Concordia-St. Paul won the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. This marks the fourth time that the Golden Bears have claimed the NSIC Tournament championship in 11 trips. On Wednesday, Concordia knocked off UMD 81-72 in the first round of the tournament. The win was Paul Fessler’s 300th of his career at CU. The Golden Bears knocked down a sizzling 49.1% (26-53) from the floor and 42.9% (6-14) from three in the win. Cu also did an excellent job of protecting the rim as they blocked a school record 12 shots compared to just one for the Bulldogs. On Sunday, the Golden Bears did an excellent job of taking care of the ball with only four turnovers in the game while also forcing 13 in a 73-52 win over Minot State in the quarterfinals. CU held the Beavers to over 20 points below their season average as they held them to just 33.9% from the floor. Concordia also held advantages in points off turnovers, fast break points, bench points and assists. On Monday, CU picked up a 78-66 win over Sioux Falls to advance to the title game. The Golden Bears grinded out the win as they got to the free throw line 37 times for the game, hitting 25 of them. Ball control was once again the story as the Golden Bears put together their second straight game with four or less turnovers while committing no more than two in a any half during that stretch. The Golden Bears only forced nine turnovers for USF but were opportunistic in those turnovers as they had an 11-2 advantage on points off turnovers. On Tuesday, suffocating defense was the story for the Golden Bears in the final as they held the Wolves to just 25.0% (14-56) from the floor while also forcing 14 turnovers in a 54-36 win. The 36 points scored by Northern State was by the far the season low for the top seed out of the North. NSU also went just 4-17 from beyond the arc and 4-10 from the free throw line.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY - Plagued by turnovers earlier in the season against No. 19 Minnesota State University (23-5), the University of Mary women’s basketball team was bested again by the Mavericks due largely to turnovers. The Marauders committed 24 turnovers that led to 28 points by the Mavericks as U-Mary was eliminated by a score of 95-71 in the quarterfinal round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Women’s Basketball Tournament Sunday afternoon. Senior Linda Murray (C, 6-2, Sr., Fresno, Calif. / Edison HS / Merced CC) led the Marauders with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting to go with eight rebounds. A transfer from Merced Community College, Murray finishes her career at U-Mary with 797 career points and 491 career rebounds good 29th and 15th place respectively all-time in Marauders history. Going 3-of-5 from deep, McKenzie Foster (G, 5-10, Sr., Big Timber, Mont. / Sweet Grass County HS) finishes her career with 179 made 3-pointers, good for second most in U-Mary’s NCAA era (2006-07) and 837 career points, which ranks 26th all-time. Lindsey Sand’s (G, 5-8, Sr., Steele, N.D. / Kidder County HS) four assists puts her at 12th all-time in U-Mary history with 262 assists.

MINNESOTA CROOKSTON - The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team would battle early on, but a 29-7 run during a seven-minute stretch of the second half would guide the 19th-ranked Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks to a 106-63 win over the Golden Eagles. The season ends for Minnesota Crookston in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament. UMC has a lot of optimism despite their season ending Wednesday. The Golden Eagles return all but one player from their roster, including a sophomore class which accounts for 66 percent of the team’s offense. Moenkedick and Thielman will lead the charge moving into the future as both players improved from their freshman seasons and look poised for even bigger and better things moving into the future.

MINNESOTA DULUTH - Concordia University, St. Paul seemed a step ahead of the Bulldogs all night as the University of Minnesota Duluth fought back several times but saw its season come to a close in the opening round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health Tournament on Wednesday night, falling 81-72 in St. Paul. The third-seed Golden Bears (22-8) built up a pair of 11-point leads in the opening half but saw UMD(14-13) fight back twice, down 22-21 at the midpoint of the half and down just three at the break. The Bulldogs end their season with a winning record for the sixth time in six seasons under head coach Annette Wiles. Concordia moves on to play second-seed Minot State this weekend in the next round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament.

MINNESOTA STATE - The No. 19 Minnesota State women’s basketball found itself down one point with less than 15 seconds to play, but the Mavericks were unable to score the go-ahead bucket as time expired, falling to Northern State 57-56. With the win, the Wolves improve to 24-5 overall, while the Mavericks fall to 23-6. The Mavericks will wait to see if they receive an at-large bid for the NCAA Central Region Tournament. The tournament bracket will be released on Sunday, at 9 p.m., and can be viewed on NCAA.com.

MSU MOORHEAD - A six-game winning streak and a win over No. 8-ranked Wayne State highlighted the 2013-14 season for the Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team. The Dragons finished 16-11 overall and 12-10 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The 16-11 record gives MSUM 14 straight winning seasons under Karla Nelson, who has never had a losing season as a head coach. Nelson is 240-159 at MSUM. MSUM will graduate three seniors -- Megan Strese, Haley Thomforde and Morgan Zabel. The team will return several letterwinners in 2013-14, including Meghan Roehrich, who was third on the team in scoring this season, and Savanna Handevidt and Morgan Banasik, both of whom started all 27 games for the Dragons this season.

While MISU had opportunities to cut further into the lead, the Beavers couldn’t get it under 10 and CU pulled away from there. Minot State, which came into the tournament as the No. 9 ranked team in the NCAA Central Region, will wait to see its fate in the final regional poll March 9.

NORTHERN STATE - The Northern State University women’s basketball team fell to Concordia-St. Paul, 36-54, in the Championship game of the NSIC\San- ford Health Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Wolves (24-6) will now await their fate to be announced Sunday during the regional selection show. NSU previously sat in the seventh spot in the central region rankings. Northern was unable to improve from a mere 22.2 percent field goal shooting in the first half of play after scoring only 15 points. The NSU defense held the Golden Bears, who average just over 70 points a game, to only 54 points in the loss, however the offense could not catch a break to get going. The 24 CU points in the paint were the game maker for the Golden Bears who also did not play to their season averages offensively.

SIOUX FALLS - The University of Sioux Falls women’s basketball postseason run came to an end on Monday night dropping a tough game against the No. 3 seed in the South Division in Concordia-St. Paul. The Golden Bears were paced by a trio of athletes as Anika Whiting, Rachel Hansen and Ameshia Kearney combined to score 63 of CU’s 78 points on their way to a 78-66 victory at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. The Cougars end their second year of competing in the NSIC and NCAA Division II with a 14-15 record, including going 8-14 in the conference.

SMSU - Bree Holleman, Rebekah Rolling, Alison Nagel, Jessie Watts, and Hannah Beeler all played in their final game in a Southwest Minnesota State Univer- sity uniform as the Mustangs were eliminated in the first round of the NSIC / Sanford Health tournament by Northern State 73-45. Rolling (5-9, Guard, Sr., Bancroft, Iowa / South Sentral Kossuth / Iowa Central CC) tallied 10 points for the Mustangs in the loss on 4 of 8 shooting. SMSU finishes the season 4-23.

ST. CLOUD STATE - The St. Cloud State University women’s basketball team took the court at Halenbeck Hall this evening for a first-round match- up in the 2014 Sanford Health Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) tournament. The Huskies faced the Cougars from the University of Sioux Falls. St. Cloud State entered into the match-up as the NSIC North #4 seed, the Cougars coming in seeded at #5 in the South. The Huskies fell to the University of Sioux Falls 68-75 in final scoring, putting an end to their 2014 season. The Huskies finish the year with a 16-11 overall mark. With time expiring, Rachael Moen (Savage) scored eight consecutive points, but it wasn’t enough. The Cougars’ shooting was consistent throughout the entire contest, holding a 50% field goal percentage in both halves. The Huskies shot 43% in the first half and just 23.3% in the second. Rachael Moen led all players with 23 points on the night (tying her career high). Moen went four of nine from beyond the arc and made five of six shots from the line. She dished out a team-high four assists. Sam Price (Eau Claire, Wis.) finished with 16 points and Lexy Petermann (Fond du Lac, Wis.) added 13 on six of 11 shooting from the field. Price knocked down her 186th three-point shot this evening, allowing her to finish her career in second place on the all-time three point field goal charts. Head Coach Lori Fish completes her sixth season with St. Cloud State and now holds a 92-73 record with the Huskies.

UPPER IOWA - The Peacock women’s basketball team nearly pulled off their biggest upset since moving up to NCAA Division II and joining the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wednesday night. Upper Iowa led Minot State for most of the game and held a one-point lead with 34 seconds to play. The Beavers converted the game-winning shot with 9 seconds on the clock and UIU’s final shot was blocked silencing the upset bid and handing the Peacocks a 74-73 loss in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament.

WAYNE STATE - NSIC regular season champion Wayne State was upset in the quarterfinals of the NSIC Sanford Health Women’s Basketball Tournament Saturday evening by the University of Sioux Falls 75-69 in overtime at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls. The #9 Wildcats shot just 33.3 percent from the field in the game, making 24 of 72 shots, as the contest featured four ties and 10 lead changes. First Team All-NSIC forward Jordan Spencer led the Wildcats in scoring with 17 points, but was just 6 of 15 shooting and 5 for 10 at the free throw stripe. Junior forward Millie Niggeling accounted for 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists off the bench followed by reserve junior forward Jaylan Spencer with 14 points and six rebounds. Wayne State, 27-4 and ranked fourth in the Central Region, now awaits word on an at-large bid for the NCAA Division II National Tournament with the NCAA selection show slated for Sunday, March 9th at 9 p.m.

WINONA STATE - Abby Busch led all scorers with 25 points but the Winona State women’s basketball team fell to the University of Mary 72-66 in the opening round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament Wednesday in Bismarck, ND. Busch, who set the WSU single-game record with 39 points in the team’s final game of the regular season, went 8-of-25 from the floor while knocking down all eight of her free throw attempts. The senior added nine rebounds while passing out a pair of assists. Winona State ends its season with a 10-17 overall record.
