The Weekly Notes Online: a resource for use while the building is closed www.llandaffcathedral.org.uk

Trinity Sunday – 7th June 2020

Welcome to The Weekly Notes Online. These Notes are produced each week during this period of ‘lockdown’. The Cathedral Office is closed and the office and lay staff have all been furloughed. As a clergy team we are following the instructions of the Government and the and are working in as full a way as possible under the current circumstances and within the current restrictions.

As a Cathedral community our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are suffering as a consequence of the covid-19 pandemic. We remember those who are suffering from the virus; we give thanks and praise to God for all who care for them, especially healthcare professionals and all who maintain our hospitals and the National Health Service. We pray too for those who have died and for those who have been bereaved. May the healing mercies of our risen Lord Jesus surround them all.

The Collect and Readings for today Almighty and everlasting God, you have given us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity: keep us steadfast in this faith, that we may evermore be defended from all adversities; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? Who has directed the spirit of the LORD, or as his counsellor has instructed him? Whom did he consult for his enlightenment, and who taught him the path of justice? Who taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding? Even the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as dust on the scales; see, he takes up the isles like fine dust. Lebanon would not provide fuel enough, nor are its animals enough for a burnt-offering. All the nations are as nothing before him; they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness.

Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God’? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40.12-17,27-31

Psalm 8 - O Lord our governor, how exalted is your name in all the earth. O Lord our governor, how exalted is your name in all the world! Out of the mouths of infants and children your majesty is praised above the heavens. You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries, to quell the enemy and the avenger.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses, What are mortals, that you should be mindful of them? mere human beings, that you should seek them out? You have made them little lower than the angels; you adorn them with glory and honour.

You give them mastery over the works of your hands; and put all things under their feet, all sheep and oxen, even the wild beasts of the field, the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatsoever moves in the paths of the sea.

A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians. Brothers and sisters, put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. 2 Corinthians 13.11-13

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Matthew The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’ Matthew 28.16-20

Prayers of Intercession Let us bring our prayers to God almighty, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, knowing that God knows and understands all the concerns of our hearts.

Let us pray for the Church, that our lives may so reflect the love and grace of God that all people may know they are welcome.

Let us pray for the world, that divided nations and communities may yet find the peace that comes from justice and mercy.

Let us pray for all who feel weary or defeated, that they may know the renewing strength of God.

Let us give thanks for all who have gone ahead of us into glory, whose wisdom, love and kindness we miss. May we, with them, find ourselves welcomed into the kingdom of heaven.

Almighty and eternal God, you have revealed yourself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and live and reign in the perfect unity of love: hold us firm in this faith, that we may know you in all your ways and evermore rejoice in your eternal glory, who are three Persons yet one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A form of intercession for this time of global pandemic: Let us pray to God, who is our refuge and stronghold and who alone makes us dwell in safety:

For all who are affected by coronavirus, through illness or isolation or anxiety, that they may find relief and recovery and that we may be alert to their needs, and care for them in their vulnerability Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

For those who are guiding our nation at this time, and shaping national policies, that they may make wise decisions: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

For doctors, nurses and medical researchers, that through their skill and insights many will be restored to health: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

For the vulnerable and the fearful, for the gravely ill and the dying, that they may know your comfort and peace: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

We commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray, to the mercy and protection of God. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Some Cathedral News…….

Dean John Rogers: we are delighted to note that this coming Thursday, 11th June, the Very Reverend John Rogers will celebrate the 60th anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood. Dean John was the Dean of Llandaff from 1993-1999. He is keeping well but of course is unable to celebrate this milestone of an anniversary in the way that he and his family would like, because of the restrictions of ‘lockdown’. If you would like to send him good wishes on his Diamond Jubilee he will be very happy to hear from you. His postal address is 14 Dolau Bran, Llandovery, SA20 0DF and his email is [email protected]. We send Dean John our warmest congratulations and good wishes as we thank God for his long and faithful ministry. By following the link to Llandaff Matters at the end of these Notes you can read more about Dean John’s ministry and browse some photos of him and his family!

The Fairtrade Shop in Canton – Fair Do’s We have had a message from Jan, the Manager of the Fair Do's shop in Canton to let us know that the shop is open to customers again, but only on Fridays at the moment. Jan asks for our prayers at this difficult time for the shop, that there may continue to be a fair trade presence in , and an outlet for suppliers from overseas, who need help as much as ever. The shop is on Llandaff Road in Canton.

Christian Aid Week Love unites us all! Thank you to everyone for making a difference in Christian Aid Week. This year your donations on-line have helped save lives. From families living in over-crowded refugee camps, to people with no clean water to wash their hands, your support has made a real difference. Your love and support mean that

Christian Aid can continue to deliver life-saving work around the world. Love never fails. Even in the darkest moments, love gives hope. My sincere thanks and best wishes to you all, Kate Bates

Llandaff Cathedral online While our weekly services and daily thoughts for the day continue, we are planning to strengthen our presence online and on social media over the coming months. We will be looking afresh at the design of the website and increasing our presence on social media. Aware of the fact that when accessing the website on mobile phones it is not easy to navigate we will be looking at ways to improve the overall look of the website. One of the things we also hope to do is create an electronic mailing list so we can send the newsletter and other communications ‘directly to your inbox’! If you would like to be part of our mailing list then please click here.

Cathedral 900 Celebrations Sadly of course, most of our planned celebrations have not been able to happen. There should by now have been regular concerts and recitals, the Choral Society offering of St Teilo with the Cathedral Choir, narrated by Huw Edwards of the BBC and the finalising of plans for our Family Fun Day. The 900th celebrations planning group has meet a couple of times via video link during this period of lockdown and will meet again later in June. The group has proposed, with the support of the Cathedral Chapter, to ‘translate’ as many of the planned events as possible into the 2021 diary on similar dates. We can continue to look forward to a year of celebration and wonder what our successors will think at the 1000th anniversary when they look back and see that most of our 900th celebrations happened a year later than they should have!

Foodbank news St Teilo’s High School is operating a foodbank from its premises, but you don’t need to travel to the school to deliver food. The school chaplain lives in Llandaff and is willing for food to be left at his address: 12 Fairwater Grove West Llandaff CF5 2JQ. He takes them to school every Wednesday.

Praying in ‘lockdown’ On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, Canon Mark and Canon Jan meet by video link to say Morning Prayer together at 9.00 am and Evening Prayer together at 5.30 pm. During these times of prayer, they remember all those on the weekly cycles of prayer as contained in these Notes. They also pray for you – members of the Cathedral community. If you would like them to pray for anyone or anything in particular please send them your requests for prayer.

Giving during ‘lockdown’ You can now give to the Cathedral ‘online’ through the following link:

www.easydonate.org/LLANDAFF or you can give by text*: • to donate £5, text LLANDAFF to 70970 • to donate £10, text LLANDAFF to 70191

* Fundraising, payments and donations will be processed and administered by the National Funding Scheme (Charity No: 1149800), operating as DONATE. Texts will be charged at your standard network rate. For Terms & Conditions, see www.easydonate.org

Thank you to those who have made additional donations to Cathedral funds over the last few weeks. We have been touched by some of the messages we have received with the donations. We continue to be grateful to all who give through the Gift Direct scheme. This is hugely appreciated. You can join the Church in Wales Gift Direct scheme through an online form, so if you would like to join the scheme and perhaps change from giving through the weekly envelopes or by putting cash in the plate to this secure and guaranteed way of supporting the Cathedral you can find the details here.

At this time of course, we are losing the income we would normally receive in the collection plate on a Sunday so it would help us enormously if as many people as possible were to give through the Gift Direct scheme. Check out the link given above or call the clergy if you have any specific questions. One-off donations can also be sent to the office.

Preparations for the re-opening of Churches It is likely to be some time yet before the Cathedral is open again for worship on a Sunday but please rest assured we will be open as soon as we are allowed to be. The Bishop has said this week that the Cathedral should be amongst the first Church buildings to open and the clergy and Cathedral Chapter are actively considering the steps we will need to take to open safely when the time comes.

A statement from Bishop June – 30th April 2020

The Dean is not in good health just now and has been signed off by his GP for an initial period of six weeks. He has not contracted Covid-19 but has been advised to take a time of complete rest and recuperation, and that is likely to mean that he will be away from The Deanery until at least the middle of June. If you would like to contact him to send your good wishes then please do write to him at the Deanery where mail will get forwarded; but he ought not to be attending to e- mails during this time.

I have asked Canon Mark Preece and Canon Jan van der Lely to jointly attend to the management of the Cathedral’s life during this period which I know they will do with great care and diligence.

I have also requested that Gerard Elias QC, in his capacity as Vice Chair, should chair the Chapter in the Dean’s absence which he has generously agreed to do. The normal business of Chapter, attending to the current challenges and planning for the future of the Cathedral, will continue as usual.

THE CATHEDRAL OFFICE The office is closed but for general enquiries you may still email [email protected] or call 07907 635021

Greetings from during lockdown!

Would you like a friendly chat on the phone, or help with shopping? There are volunteers available, do contact us and we can help out.

On our website, www.llandaffcathedral.org.uk you can find a Sunday Service, a daily ‘Thought for the day’, and a weekly newsletter which includes prayers.

We will open the Cathedral for individual prayer and for congregational worship just as soon as permitted by the Government and the Church in Wales.

Meanwhile the clergy pray together regularly by video link.

Do send us your prayer requests to include in our prayers.

You may like to use this prayer during the pandemic: Keep us, good Lord, under the shadow of your mercy in this time of uncertainty and distress. Sustain and support the anxious and fearful, and lift up all who are brought low; that we may rejoice in your comfort, knowing that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
