  • Hitchmoughs Black Country Pubs
HITCHMOUGH’S BLACK COUNTRY PUBS WEST BROMWICH (Inc. Golds Green, Greets Green, Hill Top, Lyndon) 3rd. Edition - © 2014 Tony Hitchmough. All Rights Reserved www.longpull.co.uk INTRODUCTION Well over 40 years ago, I began to notice that the English public house was more than just a building in which people drank. The customers talked and played, held trips and meetings, the licensees had their own stories, and the buildings had experienced many changes. These thoughts spurred me on to find out more. Obviously I had to restrict my field; Black Country pubs became my theme, because that is where I lived and worked. Many of the pubs I remembered from the late 1960’s, when I was legally allowed to drink in them, had disappeared or were in the process of doing so. My plan was to collect any information I could from any sources available. Around that time the Black Country Bugle first appeared; I have never missed an issue, and have found the contents and letters invaluable. I then started to visit the archives of the Black Country boroughs. Directories were another invaluable source for licensees’ names, enabling me to build up lists. The censuses, church registers and licensing minutes for some areas, also were consulted. Newspaper articles provided many items of human interest (eg. inquests, crimes, civic matters, industrial relations), which would be of value not only to a pub historian, but to local and social historians and genealogists alike. With the advances in technology in mind, I decided the opportunity of releasing my entire archive digitally, rather than mere selections as magazine articles or as a book, was too good to miss.

  • Disley from Chantry to Parish: Sources for the History of Anglican Chapels
Disley from chantry to parish: Sources for the history of Anglican chapels Jan Wood The church of St. Mary, Disley, stands high upon a hill above the village, reached by a steep path from the lychgate at the bottom of Red Lane. When Oliver Fizzwig, columnist on the Glossop Record, visited it, he wended his way through ‘winding mazes of shrubbery’. John Byng had earlier been impressed by the view of the church from below and of the surrounding countryside from the church yard above,1 but by the 1930s the building was concealed by lime trees,2 and today’s visitor has to search even harder than Mr Fizzwig for that first view. Its history has also been difficult to see clearly and has to be approached by circuitous ways. Disley became a parish church only in 19 13,3 and its previous status as a chantry and then as a parochial chapel has served to obscure its foundation and early history from the view of historians just as surely as the trees now obscure it from visitors. Disley lies in the foothills of the Pennines in north-east Cheshire, within Macclesfield forest and close to the Derbyshire border.4 The village is on the edge of Lyme Park, where the patrons of Disley church, the Legh family, lived from the sixteenth century until the ' S. • Monroe County Court Records 1818- Early1900s
Monroe County Court Records 1818- Early1900s November, 2017 Compiled by Volunteers of the Genealogy Library Monroe County History Center Preface The Monroe County History Center holds all known original Monroe County Court Records to approximately 1950. The documents were previously held by the County Clerk’s office and were transferred to the Historical Society in the 1990’s. Some records listed in the original ledgers were lost before this transfer. This index comprises the earliest county court records from 1818 to the early 1900’s held at the History Center. Both civil and criminal cases are included. In criminal cases, the defendant broke a law and the plaintiff is the State of Indiana. In some cases, the defendant broke a law at the offense of another individual (for example, a robbery), and these cases are listed by the plaintiff with the signifier (State ex rel.) following the plaintiff’s name. Divorce cases are marked in the notes section. The 1818-1870 records were not indexed for date and cause.
