2018 Golf Advisory Committee TO: Boys Athletic Directors and Boys Golf Coaches FROM: Rob Wigod, Commissioner SUBJECT: 2018 Southern Section Ford Boys Golf PREVIEW – January 2018 IMPORTANT PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING PLAYOFF FORMAT Tuesday, April 24, 2018 CIF-SS Team & Individual Freelance Tournament • The number of individuals advancing from the Freelance Events shall be determined by the size and strength of the field. The number advancing will be reviewed and decided upon by the Golf Committee. • Individuals who advance will be placed as near as possible to a Regional Qualifier closest to their school of attendance. Monday, May 7, 2018 CIF-SS Individual Regionals • The top 20 players from each of the three individual regional events will advance to the CIF-SS Individual Finals. • There will be a playoff (or card-off in the event a playoff is not possible) for the 20th spot. Monday/Tuesday, May 14/15, 2018 CIF-SS Division Team Championships • The top two teams from each of the seven division championship events will advance to the CIF-SS SCGA Team Qualifier. Thursday, May 17, 2018 CIF-SS SCGA Team Qualifier / CIF-SS Individual Finals • There will be 14 teams competing in this event, and the top 4 teams will advance to the CIF/SCGA Southern State Regional Championship. • The top 28 individual players (who are not part of a team already advancing) will advance to the CIF/SCGA Southern State Regional Championship. o Note: Only the players who qualified to play in this event through the individual regional events will be eligible to earn one of the 28 individual spots. The CIF Southern Section Golf Advisory Committee felt that the re-structuring the playoff events will benefit all schools and high school golfers in the Southern Section. • Student-athletes will miss less days of school by combining the SCGA Team Qualifier and Individual Finals into the same event. • The cost of travel expenses that schools incur will be reduced due to traveling to one less event. • The new format eliminates the temptation for players to withdraw from the Individual Finals after their team advances to the SCGA State Regional under the previous format. 2018 CIF Southern Section Boys Golf Important Dates Freelance Participation Notice/Schedule Before February 24, 2018 Start of Season Saturday, February 24, 2018 League Finals Manager Information Due Friday, March 2, 2018 Freelance Individual and Team ENTRY DUE DATE Thursday, April 19, 2018 9:00 a.m. Last Day for League Competition Thursday, May 3, 2018 End of Season Friday, May 4, 2018 Team, Individual and At Large ENTRY DUE DATE Friday, May 4, 2018 9:00 a.m. CIF Southern Section 2017 - 2018 Golf Advisory Committee Ron Capps, Ayala High School Mike McMonegal, Junior Golf/County of LA Jeff Evans, Wilson/LB High School Dennis McReynolds Dan Fong, Mayfair High School Nori Parvin Jon Gomez, St. Bonaventure High School Carol Sarkissian, Magnolia High School John Haygood, Los Alamitos High School Dick Sebek, Nordhoff High School Jim Jastrab, West Covina High School Aaron Solis, San Marcos High School Ted Jones Glenn Van Enk, Peninsula High School Kevin LeDuc, M.L. BOYS STRENGTH OF LEAGUE 2018 Updated 1/26/18 Each year, Team Divisionals will be composed of leagues using the factors of competitive equity and geography for placement into each division. There will be a strong effort to ensure that every Team Divisional Championship will have a balanced number of leagues in each one. The competitive equity of each league will be determined by giving each league a strength rating based on points accumulated by golfers from each league who qualified for Team and Individual Golf Championships in the previous year. Geography may come into play, when appropriate, in an effort to try and place leagues. INDIVIDUAL 3 points for each individual golfer who advances to the CIF/WSCGA/SCGA Regionals. 2 points for each individual golfer who advances to the CIF Southern Section Individual Finals or fails to advance in the playoff for the final spot. 1 point for each individual golfer within one stroke of the qualifying score at CIF Individual Regional Tournament. TEAM 3 points for each team who advances to the CIF/WSCGA/SCGA Regionals. 2 points for each team that advances or ties for the final spot but loses the tie breaker for the CIF/WSCGA/SCGA Qualifying Tournament. 1 point for any 2nd place, 3rd place or 4th place team from a league who qualifies for the CIF-SS Team Divisional Championships. Maximum adjustment is down 1 entry. NOTE: In order to have 8 or 9 individual entries, a league must have earned at least one team point and one individual point. QUALIFYING CRITERIA Team Qualifying Criteria: BOYS TEAM SCORE PAR 8 SCORES 210 or lower Par 36 Adjustable by Par 215 Par 37 205 Par 35 FREELANCE Individual Qualifying Criteria: Established index of 15 or better OR 10 verified scores of 42 or better for nine holes (par 36) since the start of the season. (Note: 18 hole rounds may be counted as separate 9 hole scores) Note: The Golf Advisory Committee has determined that qualifying scores must follow USGA scoring rules. Therefore, no league amended rules (such as double par scoring, playing out of bounds and lost ball as a lateral hazard, etc) will be allowed for qualifying scores. Entry Information and Instructions Size of League Total Entries At Large Entry 4 Team League 2 Teams (1st and *2nd Place League Finishers) 3rd or lower Place Team* 5 Team League 3 Teams (1st, *2nd and *3rd Place League Finishers) 4th or lower Place Team* 6 Team League 3 Teams (1st, *2nd and *3rd Place League Finishers) 4th or lower Place Team* 7 Team League 4 Teams (1st, *2nd, *3rd and *4th Place League Finishers) 5th or lower Place Team* 8 Team League 4 Teams (1st, *2nd, *3rd and *4th Place League Finishers) 5th or lower Place Team* *Recognized League Champions are considered entry #1 and will not be required to have qualifying scores.
