Native Orchids in Southeast Alaska Marlin Bowles & Bob Armstrong 2019 Preface Southeast Alaska's rainforests, peatlands and alpine habitats support a wide variety of plant life. The composition of this vegetation is strongly influenced by patterns of plant distribution and geographical factors. For example, the ranges of some Asian plant species extend into Southeast Alaska by way of the Aleutian Islands; other species extend northward into this region along the Pacific coast or southward from central Alaska. Included in Southeast Alaska's vegetation are at least 27 native orchid species and varieties whose collective ranges extend from Mexico north to beyond the Arctic Circle, and from North America to northern Europe and Asia. These orchids survive in a delicate ecological balance, requiring specific insect pollinators for seed production, and mycorrhizal fungi that provide nutrients essential for seedling growth and survival of adult plants. These complex relationships can lead to vulnerability to human impacts. Orchids also tend to transplant poorly and typically perish without their fungal partners. They are best left to survive as important components of biodiversity as well as resources for our enjoyment. Our goal is to provide a useful description of Southeast Alaska's native orchids for readers who share enthusiasm for the natural environment and desire to learn more about our native orchids. This book addresses each of the native orchids found in the area of Southeast Alaska extending from Yakutat and the Yukon border south to Ketchikan and the British Columbia border. For each species, we include a brief description of its distribution, habitat, size, mode of reproduction, and pollination biology. -

Mihail Sadoveanu, nr. 3, 700490–Iaşi, Romania Corresponding author: [email protected] This second part of the paper about the vascular flora of Rarău Massif listed approximately half of the whole number of the species registered by the authors in their field trips or already included in literature on the same area. Other taxa have been added to the initial list of plants, so that, the total number of taxa registered by the authors in Rarău Massif amount to 1443 taxa (1133 species and 310 subspecies, varieties and forms). There was signaled out the alien taxa on the surveyed area (18 species) and those dubious presence of some taxa for the same area (17 species). Also, there were listed all the vascular plants, protected by various laws or regulations, both internal or international, existing in Rarău (i.e. 189 taxa). Finally, there has been assessed the degree of wild flora conservation, using several indicators introduced in literature by Nowak, as they are: conservation indicator (C), threat conservation indicator) (CK), sozophytisation indicator (W), and conservation effectiveness indicator (E). Two collections in 1981 and 1982 extend the range of Malaxis monophyllos var. diphyllos, approximately 2000 km southeast of those described from the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. During vegetation sampling for a forest habitat variety diphyllos in the Flora of Alaska, nor did Scog type classification in the Queen Charlotte Islands, I gan (1978) in the Flora of Canada. A third variety, discovered a variety of White Malaxis or Adder's var. brachypoda, was collected previously in several mouth, Malaxis monophyllos (L.) Schwartz var. locations in coastal B.C. (Szczawinski 1959). It differs diphyllos (Chamisso) Luer, previously described only from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. This new record represents a disjunct population approximately 2000 km southeast of its known range (Figure I). The first collection was made on September II, 1980 in a topogenous bog at 390 m elevation on south eastern Graham Island, 10 km north of Queen Char lotte City, B.C. -

Malaxis rzedowskiana R.González (Malaxideae, Orchidaceae) from Mexico produces a pleasant fl oral odor reminiscent of violets in contrast to the unpleasant odors noted for several other members of Malaxideae. Analysis of the fl oral odor of M. rzedowskiana by headspace trapping and thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed the presence of kaurene (76%), (E)-ß-ionone (18%) and (E)-a-ionone (4%) as the main components. This is the fi rst report of a fl oral odor containing a high proportion of kaurene. -

The decline/expansion rate of orchids in the North Western part of European Russia (Leningrad, Novgorod and Pskov Regions, an area approx. 195,000 km2) was estimat- ed using this method. The method is based on comparison of numbers of grid cells where a certain species was recorded in various time intervals using specially designed software. More than 9000 records were used, however the territory remained insufficiently and uneven- ly studied both spatially and over time. The study revealed a statistically significant (p < 0.01) decrease for Coeloglossum viride, Corallorhiza trifida, Cypripedium calceolus, Gymnadenia conopsea, Herminium monorchis, Malaxis monophyllos, Neotinea ustulata and Orchis militaris and a significant increase for Dactylorhiza baltica, D. fuchsii and Platanthera chlorantha. In several taxa, the trend was changed over the time. Of them, Gymnadenia conopsea displayed significant decline only since the middle of XX century, and Orchis militaris and Epipactis atrorubens decreased significantly only in the end of XIX and the beginning of XX century. The reasons for these patterns of dynamics were discussed. Parallels between the dynamics of orchids and land use in different periods of time in Russia are provided. It is similar in size and overall floral morphology to Malaxis cipoensis, a species endemic to upland rocky fields on the Espinhaço range in Southeastern Brazil, which is its closest relative according to a cladistics analysis of nuclear (ITS) and plastid (matK) DNA sequences presented here. However, M. irmae is distinguished from M. cipoensis by inhabiting lowland marshy grasslands, possessing 3−5 long-petiolate leaves per shoot (vs. 2 shortly petiolate leaves), cy- lindrical raceme (vs. corymbose), pale green flowers (vs. green-orange flowers) and less prominent basal labellum lobules.
