DAVID KLOTZ Music Editor TELEVISION CREDITS
DAVID KLOTZ Music Editor David Klotz has devoted his career to the music side of the film and tv industry, primarily as a music editor, but also as a composer, songwriter and music supervisor. He has won six Emmy awards for his work on Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, and American Horror Story. He got his start music supervising Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed film, Memento. Soon after, he moved into music editing, working on the shows Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Blade, the TV Series, to name a few. In 2005, he formed Galaxy Beat Media, his music editorial and production company, working on TV shows including Entourage, Prison Break, Glee, and the Marvel feature film, Iron Man. David co-wrote and performed the theme song to the 2001 Robert Rodriguez blockbuster, Spy Kids. He most recently produced and arranged a cover of the 1984 classic “Never Ending Story” for Stranger Things Season 3, available on the show’s soundtrack album. David’s band Dream System 8 has created music for dozens of TV shows including 9-1-1, American Horror Story, Scream Queens, and Pose. Design/Dissect: The Inspiration Behind ‘Stranger Things’ Main Title Sequence 08.23.2016 If you've seen Netflix's Stranger Things then you know that its creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have a potent ability to channel the vibe of the early '80s, and of the pop-cultural ephemera contained therein. But as deep as you might think their vision for this supernatural drama goes, it's probable that it runs even deeper. For evidence of this, look no further than Stranger Things' colossally satisfying main title sequence, a masterpiece of mood and momentum that the Duffer Brothers were mapping out with design studio Imaginary Forces before they had even started filming the show's eight-episode first season. "We got started in the process way earlier than most titles that we do," said Imaginary Forces creative director Michelle Dougherty, who was impressed with the Duffer Brothers from the very first call with them, during which they mentioned Richard Greenberg as a reference point. Greenberg is a figure who design buffs will know as one of cinema's great main title designers, but who most people have likely never heard of. "When they mentioned his name on the call, I was like, 'wow, that's incredible,'" she said. "The Duffer Brothers are very into main titles." Greenberg's body of work includes some of the most evocative title sequences ever put on film, especially in the categories of '70s and '80s horror and sci-fi. Stark and minimal, with an almost fetishistic reverence for the type itself, his mesmerizing openings are high points in creepy classics such as The Dead Zone, Altered States and Alien. -

The day it came out, I was house sitting for three amazing dogs. I sat down in the living room of the house, and I watched the first epi- sode...and then the second...and then the third...before I knew it, I had watched the entire sea- son! I loved it! I urged so many people to watch it, and guess what? They loved it, too! This show is something special. It’s nostalgic, it’s SF, and it speaks to so many people. Also, I felt like Dustin reminded me of someone I knew...I can’t remember when I finally put my finger on it that he is a young Chris Garcia! I even got Chris Dustin’s Hawkins Middle School ID...it just seemed an appropriate thing to do. If you haven’t seen this show, you really should. Chris notes— I remember hearing everyone raving about Stranger Things on FaceBook and not getting all the hype. Vanessa and I had, I believe, one year olds slithering around the house, and theus it were difficult to get the time to actually watch. -

On Secular Spirituality in the Duffer Brothers' Stranger Things, Series 1

Abstract This paper explores the way in which the Duffer Brothers’ popular Netflix series Stranger Things draws on religious symbolism in order to create an allegorical landscape, one which invites viewers to consider the most pressing topics of our time—climate change and ideological opposition. It argues that apocalyptic sf, with its focus on urgent contemporary questions related to technological advancement, is the perfect genre for exploring secular spirituality and ethics, as it potentially impacts as well as appeals to religious and non- religious viewers alike. The paper concludes by considering the way Stranger Things encourages viewers to consider what a ‘spiritual’ response to disaster might look like, and what we might do individually and collectively to become more aware of the damaged “hyperobjects” (Morton, 2013) that surround and move through us, but which can be extremely difficult to keep in clear view. Keywords: Netflix series, Stranger Things, hyperobjects, climate change, ideological opposition. This essay focuses on the way apocalyptic narrative draws on religious themes and symbols to foreground a contemporary, secular understanding of the term “spiritual”. I have selected a popular Netflix series in order to exemplify my argument—The Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things (2016) — as many fans of the genre will be familiar with its storyline, and like me, eagerly awaiting Series 2 which will air this coming autumn. -

A Journal of Undergraduate Writing Mizzou Advantage Writing Contest: 1st Place “I Don’t Know Where My Boy Is!”: Abduction and Brainwashing in Stranger Things Blake Beck In “Chapter Six: The Monster” of Netflix’s Stranger Things, there’s the big reveal: Eleven, the daughter of Terry, a former subject in the Central Intelligence Agency’s Project MK-Ultra, was stolen—abducted—by “the big bad Man” to be used as a psychic weapon against the Soviet Union. Everything’s there: child abduction, brainwashing, the Man, an irrational fear of communism. In other words, it has all the makings of the perfect conspiracy theory, one that brims not only with government distrust but also other fears and anxieties—of childhood innocence, individualism, and social influence. With Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers have seemingly struck gold, and the show’s instant popularity is proof. Its charm is no coincidence, and though 1980s nostalgia may have a lot to do with its success, I believe it has something more to do with America’s continued preoccupation with perceived threats by unseen forces on childhood innocence and the privacy of our minds, both of which are inextricably connected. With the convergence of connected. The former entered the popular imagination of America during the Cold War, during which, “Soviet totalitarianism, technology, and collectivism were said to have reduced the Russian people to manipulable objects that could be duped without knowing it and were incapable of independent thought or action” (Smith 219).
