  • THE SOUND of MUSIC Wednesday, October 7, 2015 Ahmanson Theatre, Los Angeles
experienceL.A. THE SOUND OF MUSIC Wednesday, October 7, 2015 Ahmanson Theatre, Los Angeles THE SOUND OF MUSIC The Sound of Music is a stage and film musical based on The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, the memoir of Maria von Trapp. The story takes place in Austria at the brink of World War II. Maria, a plucky nun turned governess, is charged with caring for the seven children of a military captain. Maria’s delightful teaching of music to the children leads to their becoming a celebrated touring act, the innocence of which is shattered as the realities of Nazi rule become inescapable. Notably, many details of the von Trapp family story were changed to increase the dramatic impact of the musical version. Inspired by a pair of German films about the von Trapps from the mid-1950s, the stage version of The Sound of Music premiered on Broadway in 1959. The production won multiple Tony Awards, and the show has been revived many times since, including a renowned 1998 Broadway revival. The 1965 film version starring Julie Andrews won five Academy Awards and is still beloved today by viewers around the world. Written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, the songs of The Sound of Music—including “My Favorite Things,” “Do, Re, Mi,” “Edelweiss,” and the title song—have been celebrated for more than half a century. RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN Composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein were one of the most prolific, successful songwriting teams in the history of musical theatre. The pair’s first collaboration, Oklahoma! (1943), marked the start of a new theatrical genre: the musical play, which combined elements of musical comedy, operetta, and drama.

  • OCTOBER 2016 Welcome to October Sky! We Can’T Imagine a More Perfect Show to Give Our 2016–2017 Season a Great Launch (If You’Ll Pardon the Pun)
OCTOBER 2016 Welcome to October Sky! We can’t imagine a more perfect show to give our 2016–2017 Season a great launch (if you’ll pardon the pun). New musicals are, of course, one of The Old Globe’s specialties, and the upcoming season is filled with exactly the kind of work the Globe does best. In this very theatre, you’ll have a chance to see a revival of Steve Martin’s hilarious Picasso at the Lapin Agile; the exciting backstage drama Red Velvet; and the imaginative, fable- like musical The Old Man and The Old Moon. And of course, we’re bringing back The Grinch for its 19th year! Across the plaza in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, we hope you’ll join us for work by some of the most exciting voices in the American theatre today: award-winning actor/ songwriter Benjamin Scheuer (The Lion), Globe newcomer Nick Gandiello (The Blameless), the powerful and trenchant Dominique Morisseau (Skeleton Crew), and the ingenious Fiasco Theater, with their own particular spin on Molière’s classic The Imaginary Invalid. It’s a season we’re extremely proud and excited to share with all of you. DOUGLAS GATES Managing Director Michael G. Murphy and Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. We’re also proud to welcome the outstanding creative team that has made October Sky a reality. Director/choreographer Rachel Rockwell is an artist whose work we’ve long admired, whose skill in staging is matched by her deft touch with actors. She’s truly a perfect fit for this heartwarming and triumphant show.

What is the source of inspiration? How does one prepare for the career? Anne Livet's conversations with modern- dance choreographers are recorded in Contemporary Dance (Abbeville, 1978), and interviews with well-known ballet choreographers have appeared in journals and newspapers, but Grody and Lister have focused on the overlooked venues of Broadway, film, and television. With a string of Broadway dance credits themselves, the authors are on familiar ground. Over a period of two decades they have interviewed 17 choreographers, including Hermes Pan, Ernest Flatt, Joe Layton, Michael Bennett, and Tommy Tune. Most have little formal music training, work best with time limitations, and made a transition from dancer to choreography as opportunity presented itself. But as each responded to a similar set of questions set forth by the authors, the choreographers reveal individual approaches to their work.
