Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note On the morning of 21 October 1966 in Aberfan, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, 144 people, of whom 116 were children, were killed when a coal waste tip slid into the village engulfing some 20 houses and Pantglas Junior School. Following the disaster, a Tribunal of Inquiry was appointed by the Secretary of State for Wales under the chairmanship of Sir Herbert Edmund Davies. The Inquiry lasted from 29 November 1966 until 28 April 1967. Its report was published on 3 August 1967. During the Tribunal and afterwards the Aberfan Parents' and Residents' Association was represented by the firm of solicitors Morgan, Bruce and Nicholas, Pontypridd, with Desmond Ackner QC, Aubrey Myerson and Cyril Moseley being present at the Tribunal. (Your name) ii Abstract The thesis examines the problem of infant mortality in Merthyr Tydfil 1865- 1908. In particular it investigates why Merthyr Tydfil, an iron, steel and coal producing town in south Wales, experienced high infant mortality rates throughout the nineteenth century which rose by the end of the century despite sixty years of public health reforms. The historiography of infant mortality in nineteenth-century Britain includes few Welsh studies although the south Wales Coalfield played an important part in industrial and demographic change in Britain during the second half of the nineteenth century. The thesis argues that conditions of industrial development shaped the social, economic and public health experience in Merthyr, ensnaring its citizens in social disadvantage, reflected in the largely unacknowledged human toll among mothers and babies in that process. The thesis analyses the causes of over 17, 000 infant deaths in Merthyr Tydfil from the primary evidence of an unusually complete series of Medical Officer of Health Reports to identify the principal attributed causes of infant death and explain their social origins and context. Councillor Glenn Price was born in Quakers Yard and is married to Marion and has two children. Sheridan who is an Engineer for Panasonic and Julian who works for British Airways. Glenn has one Grandchild Emily. He was educated at Woodlands Primary school, Quakers Yard, Treharris Secondary Modern and Saint Loyes Collage Exeter. He started work as an apprentice Stone Mason but after a long illness went back to full time Education in 1985 and gained a Degree in Industrial Electronics. He then went to work for Osiris Controls were he designed Wireless Nurse Call system and wide area surveillance units. He then moved on to Surface Technology Systems where he gained D32 - D33 qualifications which allowed him to train apprentices and other staff up to NVQ Level 3. The Mayor’s Charity this year is for Macmillan Cancer Support, after a lot of fund raising Prince Charles Hospital is to have a new Macmillan Cancer ward where local people can have treatment without having to travel the many miles that they have to at present; all the monies raised will be used for the benefit of the local community. The Mayor's Appeal 2009/2010 raised over £47,000 and the Mayor Councillor Glenn Price would like to thank the people of the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil for their generous donations and support throughout his year in office.

The tragedy occurred just after nine o’clock in the morning under circumstances which apparently precluded the issue of warning. The presence of a mountain mist obscured the cascading torrent of slag so that, except for an ominous rumble, the villagers were unaware of the catastrophic fate which was about to overtake them. To make matters worse the roaring torrent burst the water main in the disused canal and several million gallons of water were released converting the slag into slurry or a muddy slime. Immediately in the path of the torrent was the junior school which was attended by pupils in the age range five to eleven years and classes had already begun. The school received the direct impact of the rolling mass and it was not long before the slurry found entry into the school through windows, doors and other apertures caused by the effect of the damage. Some account of what followed has been given by those who survived the disaster and it seems that, with the total unexpectedness of such an onslaught and the attendant delay in realising what was happening, there was naturally a time lag between the engulfing of the school and the attempts by those inside to escape or to take measures of safety. Nearby was the senior school which was attended by pupils in the age range eleven to fifteen years.
