Summer Music Technology 2013 Acoustic Resonance Lab 1 Introduction This activity introduces several concepts that are fundamental to understanding how sound is produced in musical instruments. We'll be measuring audio produced from acoustic tubes. General Notes • Work in groups of 2 or 3 • Divide up the tasks amongst your group members so everyone contributes Equipment Check Make sure you have the following: • (2) iPads • (1) Microphone • (1) Tape Measure • (1) Adjustable PVC tube with speaker • (1) Amplifier • (1) RCA to 1/8" audio cable • (1) iRig Pre-Amp • (2) Pieces of speaker wire • (1) XLR cable • (1) Pair of Alligator clips 2 Sound Generation Setup We will use one iPad to generate tones that will play through our tube. However, the iPad can't provide enough power to drive the speaker, so we need to connect it to an amplifier. From here on, we'll refer to this iPad as the Synthesizer. 1. Plug the Amplifier’s power cord into an outlet. DO NOT TURN IT ON. 2. Plug one end of the 1/8" audio cable to the iPad's headphone output jack. Plug the other end into the Amplifier’s Input jack. 3. Attach the alligator clips to the speaker wires on the Amplifier’s Output jack. Attach the other end of the clips to the speaker terminals (the speaker should be mounted to the tube). Since nuclear electric quadrupole coupling to the DEFG is sensi- tive to acoustic shear modes only, nuclear acoustic resonance (NAR) is a par- ticularly useful tool in studying the coup1 ing of electrons to shear modes without being affected by volume dilatations. -
Henry Flynt and Generative Aesthetics Redefined
1. In one of a series of video interviews conducted by Benjamin Piekut in 2005, Henry Flynt mentions his involvement in certain sci-fi literary scenes of the 1970s.1 Given his background in mathematics and analytic philosophy, in addition to his radical Marxist agitation as a member of 01/12 the Workers World Party in the sixties, Flynt took an interest in the more speculative aspects of sci-fi. “I was really thinking myself out of Marxism,” he says. “Trying to strip away its assumptions – [Marx’s] assumption that a utopia was possible with human beings as raw material.” Such musings would bring Flynt close to sci-fi as he considered the revision of the J.-P. Caron human and what he called “extraterrestrial politics.” He mentions a few pamphlets that he d wrote and took with him to meetings with sci-fi e On Constitutive n i writers, only to discover, shockingly, that they f e d had no interest in such topics. Stockhausen's Cosmic Pulses
Robin Maconie: Stockhausen’s Cosmic Pulses 2009–14 (copyright) 1 Stockhausen’s Cosmic Pulses ROBIN MACONIE Some people chase tornados; others go after black holes. From the late 1950s Stockhausen was fascinated by the idea of sounds in rotation and how to realise them in a technical sense, by means of an array of loudspeakers. Completed in 2007, Cosmic Pulses is Stockhausen’s final electronic composition.1 For a number of reasons I believe the composer knew it would be his last. The work was completed in a rush. In many ways, notably in terms of the sound material, which is very basic, it remains a sketch. The music can be described as a massive rotating sound mass, composed in 24 separately spinning frequency layers. The work thickens gradually to 24 layers, then reduces symmetrically upward in an ascending spiral that ends quite abruptly. An audience may experience the sensation of falling headlong into a black hole, or, if one is an optimist, of being carried aloft on the whirlwind like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. A tornado is an effect of a natural imbalance between temperature layers in the atmosphere, tipped into motion by the earth’s rotation, which moves progressively faster toward the equator. The rotating air mass that results spirals upwards and generates a powerful electrical charge. A black hole by comparison is an effect of gravitation creating an imbalance in spacetime. The rotational process that results spirals downward or inward and leads to the extinction of reality as we know it, or again, if one is an optimist, creates a wormhole leading either into another universe, or into our own universe at Robin Maconie: Stockhausen’s Cosmic Pulses 2009–14 (copyright) 2 another point in time. -

I examine the rationale for his background gamut of 31 pitch classes, and document the relationships among his accounts of the genera, species, and modes, and between his and earlier accounts. Specially recorded and retuned audio examples illustrate some of the surviving enharmonic and chromatic musical passages. (1) The rich compositional theory he develops in the treatise, in concert with the few surviving musical passages, offers a tantalizing glimpse of an alternative pathway for musical development, one whose radically augmented pitch materials make possible a vast range of novel melodic gestures and harmonic successions. -

The course provides intensive training in the use of spreadsheets on microcomputers for the accounting profession. The student is taught to automate many of the routine accounting functions.
