Heuchera/X Heucherella/Tiarella
Heuchera/x Heucherella/Tiarella Mark Begick The family Saxifragaceae comprises chiefly north temperate plants and includes many alpine and arctic species of xerophytic habit. This makes them adaptable and able to survive under different conditions, which is the reason why saxifrages, in particular) are so often used for dry rockery plantings. The Saxifragaceae is a large family and includes many easily recognizable genera (e.g., Astilbe, Bergenia, Heuchera, Heucherella, Rogersia, Saxifraga, and Tiarella, just to name a few). Species and cultivars of Bergenia and Heuchera are tough and persistent, so make good border plants for cool climates. Heuchera – The Coral Bells The genus Heuchera is named after Johann Heinrich von Heucher, who was a German professor of medicine. Fifty to seventy species are native to North America but only H. sanguinea, coral bells, and hybrids have gained popularity in North American gardens. These plants are either evergreen or semi- evergreen. Most of the improved cultivars are hybrids between H. sanguinea, H. americana, and H. micrantha. Many of these hybridized plants are ornamentally chosen for their colorful foliage. A few do have ornamental flowers of white, pink, or red . Heucheras do best in rich, moist well-drained soils in partial shade. They are better adapted to cooler climates, and sometimes this can enhance leaf color, especially in fall. x Heucherella – The Foamy Bells Many examples of hybrids between species of a genus occur but there are a few between genera. x Heucherella (the x denotes an intergeneric cross but is not sounded) was produced in 1912 at Nancy in France between a Heuchera hybrid and Tiarella cordifolia. -

Drought-Tolerant and Native Plants for Goleta and Santa Barbara County’s Mediterranean Climate Drought tolerant plants for the Santa Barbara and Goleta area. In the 1500's California went through an 80 year drought. During the winter there were blizzards in Central California, the Salinas River froze solid where it flowed into the Monterey Bay. During the summer there was no humidity, no rain, and temperatures in the hundreds for many months. During one year in the 1840's there was no measurable rain in Santa Barbara. (The highest measured rainfall in an hour also was in Southern California, 11 inches in an hour) The same native plants that lived through that are still on the hillsides of California. Native bees are important and effective pollinators and essential to a healthy ecosystem. The best way to support these and other beneficial insects in your garden is to provide them with native plants. ANNUALS (best sown from seed in fall) Clarkia unguiculata (elegant clarkia) Showy white, pink or magenta flowers on tall upright stems. Foliage is used by sphinx moth caterpillars (also called hummingbird moths!). Eschscholzia californica (California poppy) Favored by small sweat bees and our smallest bees, Perdita spp. Gilia capitata (globe gilia) Late-spring bloomer loved by long-horned bees. Layia platyglossa (tidy tips) Cheerful yellow and white daisy-like flowers. Lupinus succulentus (arroyo lupine) and other species Blue-purple flowers attract bumblebees. Mentzelia lindleyi Golden yellow flowers attract digger bees Nemophila menziesii (baby blue eyes) Charming little plant with blue flowers. Grows well in part sun to shade. Phacelia tanacetifolia (tansy-leaved phacelia) A must-have for any bee garden. PERENNIALS Calystegia macrostegia (morning glory) Climbing vine attracts the specialist digger bee, Diadasia bituberculata, which forages only on this flower. Helianthus annuus (common sunflower), Baileya multiradiata (desert marigold) and other Aster family species Attract many pollinators, including sweat bees, mason bees and bumble bees. Monardella spp. (coyote mint) Fragrant foliage and showy, nectar-rich flowers attract bees, flower flies and butterflies. Inflorescence: panicle of 2–3 cymes, axillary, commonly 10–20+-flowered, cymes often zigzagged and ± 1-sided, flowers nodding, lacking bracts; axes densely pubescent with spreading nonglandular and glandular hairs; bractlet subtending pedicel absent, but with a green, bowl-like swelling beneath pedicel; pedicel typically 6–20 mm long not increasing in fruit, dark to light purple (green with white flowers), glabrous. Oki, Ph.D., CE Specialist, Dept. of Plant Sciences, UC Davis Jared Sisneroz, Staff Research Associate, Dept. of Plant Sciences, UC Davis Executive Summary In these trials 16 perennial landscape plant species, (9 new cultivars and 7 underutilized species/cultivars), were evaluated for overall performance on a range of reduced irrigation levels in clay loam soil in the hot interior Central Valley of California. All plants were grown in- ground for 2 years; 12 of the species in full sun and 4 under 50% shade. Planting in October 2013 was followed by an establishment period of irrigation at 80%-100% of reference evapotranspiration (ET0) and 25% management allowable depletion through April 2015. Plants were then subjected to 1 of 4 different levels of reduced irrigation at 20%, 40%, 60%, or 80% of ET0 during the dry season through the first week of October 2015. During the deficit irrigation season they were evaluated across treatments for growth, health and vigor, overall appearance, flowering, pest tolerance, and disease resistance. From these assessments, irrigation recommendations are made for their use in the landscape. Introduction Plant performance trials are a critical step in the introduction and promotion of new or unfamiliar ornamental plants. -
