Andrew Apostoli, C.F.R. hough the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima took place almost a hundred years ago, Our Lady’s call to prayer and penance for the salvation of souls and peace in the world is as relevant now as when first delivered to three Portuguese peasant Tchildren in 1917. At the peak of World War I, Our Lady warned of another worldwide conflict, the spread of Communism, and a terrible persecution of the Church unless people repented of their sins and returned to God. She also requested devotion to her Immaculate Heart and a special consecration of Russia. Much of what Our Lady of Fatima said was revealed soon after her appearances, but the third and final “secret”, a prophetic vision seen by the children, was not unveiled by the Vatican until 2000. Pope John Paul II, who read the third secret while recovering from the attempt upon his life in 1981, believed the vision signified the sufferings the Church had endured in the 20th century. Because of the prophetic nature of the messages, Fatima has been the subject of much controversy and speculation. In this book, Fr. Andrew Apostoli, a foremost expert on Fatima, carefully analyzes all the events and messages of Fatima, and clears up lingering questions and doubts about their meaning. He also challenges the reader to hear anew the call of Our Lady to prayer and sacrifice, for the world needs generous hearts willing to make repara- tion for those in danger of losing their way to God.

Canon 277 §1 states: “Clerics are obliged to observe perfect and perpetual continence for the sake of the kingdom of Heaven and therefore are bound to celibacy. ” Accordingly, it would seem that clerics have two distinct obligations: sexual continence (no sexual relations) and celibacy (no marriage) with continence presented as the fundamental norm. With the restoration of the permanent diaconate by Paul VI in 1967 and the admission of married men to this order, a fundamental question arises: “Are married deacons, though dispensed from the obligation of celibacy, unless their wife dies, obliged to observe perfect and perpetual continence?” The dissertation has five chapters.

Director: Joseph E. Capizzi, Ph.D. HIV/AIDS can be transmitted through heterosexual intercourse, transfusion of infected blood, and from an infected mother to child through delivery. HIV—a retrovirus—is capable of mutating into various strands, which makes it difficult to develop a vaccine. While this is an on- going concern for the scientific community, another issue is facing the society today—whether an HIV/AIDS carrier can still insist on exercising his natural right to marry ( ius connubii ), given the risk of exposing an uninfected partner and possible offspring to a mortal, irreversible illness? This project addresses this question by first establishing the general principles pertaining to the meaning of natural rights. It elaborates on what they entail and the obligations that come with their exercise for the common good, and underlines that they can be limited. Then it shows that the Church recognizes the ius connubii and protects its exercise, especially by the sick— lepers and the insane—if they find willing partners.
