SPEECH BY DR TEO HO PIN, MAYOR OF NORTH WEST DISTRICT AT CLUB-100 @ NORTH WEST DINNER 2015 ON TUESDAY, 26 MAY 2015, 7.00PM AT PARLIAMENT HOUSE Minister Khaw Boon Wan My parliamentary colleagues; Er. Dr Lee Bee Wah, Dr Lim Wee Kiak and Mr Ong Teng Koon Club-100 @ North West Members A very good evening to all of you Introduction 2 It gives me great pleasure to see so many of you this evening! Thank you for taking time off to attend the Club-100 @ North West Dinner 2015. 1 Club-100 @ North West 3 In 2008, we started Club-100 @ North West to promote a culture of philanthropy among Singaporeans for the more-able corporations and individuals to give back to the community. Through the efforts of our Club-100 @ North West members, we have helped more than 10,000 residents with food-based assistance over the years. I am heartened by the strong philanthropy spirit and the compassion within the community in assisting those in need. Recruitment of new members 4 This year, I have appointed four District Councillors and an existing Club-100 @ North West member to take on the role of expanding the Club-100 @ North West network. They are Chairman Mr Chandra Mohan, Vice-Chairman Mr Dennis Tan and members Dr Rachel Lim, Mr Robert Tay and Mr Evangelos Apostolou. 5 With their extensive corporate and social network, I’m pleased to announce that the Organising Committee has recruited 60 new donors. With this achievement, we now have 600 Club-100 @ 2 North West members contributing a minimum of $100 per month towards the North West Food Aid Fund. 6 I would like to thank Chairman Mr Chandra Mohan and the Organising Committee for expanding the Club-100 @ North West membership and offering invaluable advice in the organising of tonight’s event. Furthermore, Mr Chandra has also brought in Mr Francis Koh, MD and CEO of the Koh Brothers Group to graciously sponsor tonight’s dinner. I would like to once again thank Mr Chandra, the Organising Committee and Mr Francis Koh for contributing to Club-100 @ North West, and for the event tonight. Conclusion 7 On this note, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all of you, as our valued Club-100 @ North West members and I wish you an enjoyable evening at the Parliament House tonight. Balloting of National Day Parade Tickets (Er Dr Lee Bee Wah) 2 STATISTICS ON RENUNCIATION OF SINGAPORE CITIZENSHIP 1 Mr Leon Perera asked the Prime Minister (a) from 2005 to 2015, how many Singaporeans renounced their citizenship each year; (b) what is the breakdown of the top five reasons for citizens wanting to emigrate each year as revealed through the mandatory questionnaire; (c) what is the breakdown of the top three reasons for the renunciation of Singapore citizenship each year, as revealed through the mandatory questionnaire; (d) whether the Government has done a thorough study to understand the reasons for renunciation of citizenship; and (e) what is being done to prevent such numbers from increasing. Mr Teo Chee Hean (for the Prime Minister): An average of 1,200 Singaporeans renounced their Singapore Citizenship (SC) each year from 2005 to 2015. The annual SC renunciation rate remains low at under 0.1%. Singaporeans renouncing their citizenship will be asked to indicate their reasons in a non- mandatory questionnaire. The most frequent reasons given include (a) family-related reasons - such as marriage to a foreigner or to join their family members overseas, (b) preference for a different lifestyle or environment, or (c) career or business-related reasons. Our focus is to ensure that Singapore continues to be the best home for all Singaporeans.

(i) Singapore has one of the largest World Water Day celebrations in the world Singapore holds the record for one of the largest-scale WWD celebrations, running for the entire month of March. (ii) Record number of schools and students conducting Water Rationing Exercises This year, 97 Pre-School, Primary, Secondary and tertiary schools, with a total of 43,000 students participated in the Water Rationing Exercise (WRE). For the first time, a university hostel – NUS Ridge View Residential College – conducted a 10- hour long water rationing exercise for NUS students and staff residents. 1 (iii) Record number of volunteers helping out For the first time, more than 460 volunteers from 18 organisations helped out at the SWWD roadshows or performed door-to-door home visits to spread the water message, with more than a third of the volunteers were from Team Nila. (iv) Innovative partner-led initiatives 2 Also a first, familiar international brands like McDonald’s partnered PUB to distribute 70,000 copies of “A Water Wally Adventure: The Surprise Visitor” book to customers purchasing their Happy Meals during weekends. (v) Record number of landmarks lighting up in blue on WWD From one location (Singapore Flyer) to a new record of 12 locations this year, new landmark includes the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands, light up in blue on 22 March to demonstrate strong commitment from the community towards water sustainability.

SPEECH BY MRS JOSEPHINE TEO, CHAIRMAN, PAP WOMEN’S WING AT THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION AT YWCA FORT CANNING LODGE ON 7 MARCH 2020 AT 2.30PM 1. Tomorrow is International Women’s Day (IWD). This occasion should have been special for two reasons. a. It is likely to be the last IWD before we hold the next GE. b. It is the start of a new decade and so a good time for the Women’s Wing (WW) to take stock, and to map out our vision for the future. 2. Therefore, right up to early February, we had been planning for a different kind of celebration. a. None of us could have expected the Covid-19 outbreak. b. However, in the true Singapore Spirit, the WW response is to be nimble and still come together to mark IWD in a meaningful way. Same same but different! c. At another suitable time, possibly at our annual WW Conference to be held in the later part of the year, we will revisit the important topic of our plans for the future. 3. For today, I’m sure you will agree with me, it is appropriate to begin by thanking all our frontline staff. a. We thank them in the same way as all Singaporeans. b. But as an organisation of women for women, we want in particular to recognise the women on our frontlines – nurses and doctors, Home Team emergency services and border control officers, hotel housekeepers and Page 1 of 8 hawker centre cleaners. Even our teachers and educarers have to exercise extra caution when taking care of our young ones.

CONTENTS | NEXT PREVIOUS | CONTENTS | NEXT 24 Jul 07 Mr Mah Bow Tan Minister for National Development Dear Minister, In November 2006 you asked me to lead a public consultation exercise to explore how we can better build HDB communities, in response to the challenges of globalisation, changing demographics and increasing expectations among Singaporeans. I launched the Forum on HDB Heartware with a team of Parliamentary colleagues to engage the public on this issue. Our vision was to build a HDB community where residents do not just own their own homes, but also share a collective ownership of the entire community. The Forum has now completed its study after several rounds of discussion with the public, and deliberation with Government agencies. We propose to enrich the character of the HDB Town, enhance the neighbourhood precinct and raise the community involvement of schools. We also feel that it is important to support the family unit within the community, engage residents more and encourage local voluntarism. The Forum is mindful that community building is essentially a ground-up process. Much will depend on the response of residents and the leadership of local institutions such as the grassroots, the schools and the voluntary welfare organisations. Besides policy measures and recommendations relating to facilities and other hardware, the Forum has kick-started a few pilot projects at the local level, and highlighted some existing ones in our Report, with the intention of catalysing similar efforts at community building in other neighbourhoods. The wide-ranging scope of our recommendations is a reflection both of the complexities of community-building and the richness of the public discussions.

It is fairly common for Singapore’s sports organisations to be run by politicians. We have Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and National Development Lee Yi Shyan (pictured below in white) serving as president of the Singapore Badminton Association, MP for Toa Payoh East (Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC) Zainudin Nordin (pictured below) as president of the Football Association of Singapore, and MP for Nee Soon South (Nee Soon GRC) Lee Bee Wah (pictured below in red) as president of the Singapore Table Tennis Association. Nobody should be excluded from presiding over a national sports association simply because he is a politician. That would be discrimination. (Being prominently involved in national sport raises a person’s public profile.) Politicians running sports organisations per se is not a bad thing. In fact, it can be a very good thing. Politics and sport seem like a good mix in Japan Seiko Hashimoto Japan, a global sports powerhouse with 139 Olympic gold medals (of which nine came from the Winter Olympics), also has politicians running some of its sports organisations.
