In the Preface to Mad World: Evelyn Waugh and the Secrets of Brides- head, her detailed account of the biographical background of Waugh’s 1945 novel Brideshead Revisited, Paula Byrne notes the current trend away from “the heavily footnoted biographical doorstopper” toward “more flexible and more selective” studies of particular events or pivotal periods that offer key insights into the lives and characters of their sub- jects.1 As its subtitle indicates, Robert Hudson’s “intentionally selective . parallel biography” (7) (in which, as it happens, both Waugh and his most celebrated novel make brief but significant appearances) exempli- fies this turn to what might be called “micro-biography,” focusing on the crucial months when Thomas Merton’s monastic vocation and dedication to contemplative solitude are most severely tested by the emotional, psy- chological and spiritual upheaval consequent upon falling in love with a student nurse half his age following back surgery in March 1966. This relationship would absorb the monk’s thoughts and feelings throughout the coming months until he eventually resolved, after the romance was discovered by his superiors, to recommit himself to life as a hermit begun the year before. This same period was marked by Merton’s enthusiastic discovery of the music of Bob Dylan, who was then dealing with the fallout from his own iconoclastic transformation during the previous year from acoustic folk-protest troubadour to electrified folk-rock innovator, and who would withdraw into a kind of solitude of his own following his mysterious motorcycle accident on July 28, 1966, the same day Merton was writing a Dylan-influenced love poem. -

Newman and Dr. Robert C. Koons The American Cistercian monk Thomas Merton was a tireless contributor to the 20th century conversations of the role of the monastic contemplative life in the modern world. His concept of the contemplative life’s openness to the world and service to modernity, and indeed his understanding of his own vocation, developed significantly throughout his life, to the point that some have found it helpful to distinguish between the “early Merton” and the “later Merton.” This thesis will track the changes in Merton’s thought as a guide to answering the questions that captivated Merton throughout his life: what is the relationship between contemplative interiority and active struggle for justice? What is the role and function of spirituality in the modern world? Are changes in religiosity indicative of insufficiencies in the content or communication of religion? Can the contemplative life exist today as it has for centuries? I will argue that Merton’s thought changed as he became immersed in a more secular modern society. The content of spiritual interiority remains the same, but its context must shift to the scene of modern alienation. -

In On the Soul, Aelred wrote that men and women “are fitted to cling to God,” because he placed in the soul “three things that allow it to share his eternity, participate in his wisdom, and taste his sweetness.” Those things are memory, understanding, and love. -

The Sounds of Vatican II: Musical Change and Experimentation in Two U.S. Trappist Monasteries, 1965−1984 Bradford Lee Eden* The Second Vatican Council impacted the use of liturgical music within religious communities. Two U.S. Trappist monasteries, New Melleray Abbey in Dubuque, Iowa, and Gethsemani Abbey in Bardstown, Ken- tucky, evidenced distinctive approaches to the musical freedom resulting from the Vatican II reforms. New Melleray incorporated contemporary folk music and instruments. At Gethsemani, Father Chrysogonus Waddell pioneered the use of Gregorian notation and English psalmody. The musi- cal changes had a profound effect on the Trappists’ celebration of the Mass and the praying of the Liturgy of the Hours. Introduction hile many view the Catholic Church as virtually unchanged for W over 2,000 years, a fortress against the shifting ideas and trends in society and culture, the Church has showed significant vital- ity and openness to reform. -
Merton and the Tiger Lily
MERTON AND THE TIGER LILY by Chrysogonus Waddell, o. c. s. o. Merton, Merton's biographer Michael Mott, and it would seem, the generality of Merton's readers, are in complete accord. What Are These Wounds?, writes Mott, was certainly "the worst writing Thomas Merton could do."1 Fr. Louis himself, the year before his death, and in terms even more categorical, had already anticipated Mott's censure. On 6 February 1967, he drew up in graph form an evaluation of his books.2 What Are These Wounds? there enjoys a very dubious distinction: it is the only book entered on the very bottom horizontal grid-line. It is not just " Poor;" not even, like Exile Ends in Glory, "Very poor." It is quite simply "Awful." The full title of this awful book, brought out by Bruce Publishing Company in late February of 1950, is What Are These Wounds?: The Life of a Cistercian Mystic, Saint Lutgarde of Aywieres. But this was not the original title. Fr. Louis' preferred title - a title evidently less preferred by the publishers - was The Tiger Li/y; l and it is the image of the tiger lily that figures in the opening paragraph of the preface to the book: 1.
