ISSUE #1 | JULY 2020 The Odyssey of Fellini Kayla Knuth Making raw cinematic artistry work on the big screen can be extremely challenging, and directors such as Federico Fellini meet that challenge by giving us unique films, each with a clear vision. There are many masterful auteurs within the film industry, but there is something about Fellini’s good-natured style that truly engages me, along with how he incorporates elements of both reality and fantasy in iconic films such as La Strada (1953), La Dolce Vita (1961), and 8 ½ (1963). Not everyone is capable of digging deeper into what the artist is actually saying, and many are too quick to make harsh judgements about what they see rather than what they interpret. This is another reason why his film work interests me. I enjoy the “chase” that helps me provide a deeper analysis of what certain scenes in his films actually symbolize. This makes me pay closer attention to the films, and I find myself rewinding scenes, taking a step back to investigate the meaning of what I’m seeing. Almost all of Fellini’s films feature a dominant protagonist character with qualities to which the audience can at least secretly relate. Some of Fellini’s most striking cinematic moments are memorable because of characters that tend to stick with you even when the films become unclear at times. In addition, the artistry, passion, zest for life, and inven- tiveness on display in his filmmaking help us appreciate a wide range of possibilities for cinematic representation. Aesthetically, Fellini’s films reach for what I will call “ugliness within beauty.” His films seem to ask: is there beauty to be found within ugliness? Or is there ugliness lurking within the beautiful? Fellini attempts to ask these questions through both his striking visuals and sympathetic characters. -

Introduction to Italian Cinema I. Italian Cinema from the 1940's to its Golden Period in the 1960's through the 1970's. Films will be viewed in their cultural, aesthetic and/or historical context. Readings and guiding questionnaires will help students develop appropriate viewing skills. Films will be shown in Italian with English subtitles. Graded: Graded Student. Units: 3.0 COURSE GOALS and METHODS: To develop a critical knowledge of Italian film history and film techniques and an aesthetic appreciation for cinema, attain more than a mere acquaintance or a broad understanding of specific artistic (cinematographic) forms, genres, and cultural sources, that is, to learn about Italian civilization (politics, art, theatre and customs) through cinema. Guiding questionnaires will also be distributed on a regular basis to help students achieve these goals. All questionnaires will be graded. Weekly discussions will help students appreciate connections between cinema and art and literary movements, between Italian cinema and American film, as well as to deal with questionnaires. You are required to view the films in the best possible conditions, i.e. on a large screen in class. Viewing may be enjoyable but is not meant to be exclusively entertaining. -

She has dedicated her life To the Catholic Church, The family and friends, The neglected and orphans of the world . he film I Vitelloni (1953), directed by Federico Fellini, focuses on a group of young men who are lingering in a state of youthful Tirresponsibility. In the film’s first half, vague dreams, minor ploys, and predictions predominate, whereas the second half brings real-world concerns, personal struggles and enlightenment, which leads toward the dissolution of the group. The preoccupations of these young men are indicative of an idealistic view of life as well as the anticipation of mature age. We believe that the vitelloni are trying to discover how many of their dreams the post-war era will allow them to fulfill. At first glance, they may appear indolent and not very ambitious about their futures ‒ their ages ranging from about 20 to 30. In fact, we see them trying to earn money: Leopoldo by writing plays, Riccardo by being a host and singer, and Fausto by working in a shop. The group and their families act as one grand family. The film is a microcosm of Italian society in the 1950s where young people face uncertain employment. -

I was reminded of such by a communication that came my way from AMPAS (the Oscar® people) listing nine categories’ shortlists of potential nominees. Now, they’ve been doing that shortlist thing with Foreign Language films for quite some time – there’s a lot of films out there in the world, it would be rather too much for the Academy members to have to watch them all! – but, to my knowledge, they’ve not before done it with any other category. It may be it’s for the same reason of sheer volume as above, but I guess what it also does is allows a greater number of films a reason to mention their Academy Award status in their advertising. I can see it now, “Academy Award Nomination shortlisted…” written on the poster. Where will it all end I wonder, “Academy Award Nomination eligible…”? As luck would have [nothing to do with] it, one of the films on the Foreign Language short list – which at this point in time seems the overwhelming favourite – is Bong Joon Ho’s utterly brilliant Parasite, which takes its place alongside a programme of films that is simplythe best line-up of new cinema I’ve seen in a long time. There’s not just the aforementioned South Korean masterpiece, there’s Sam Mendes’ extraordinary ‘one-take’ wonder 1917 (google ‘1917 behind the scenes featurette’ and prepare to simply have to see this film); Taika (‘Wilderpeople’) Waititi’s WWII, Nazi Germany-set, Jojo Rabbit; Armando Iannucci’s breathless Dickens, The Personal History of David Copperfield; Robert Egger’s uniquely bonkers, fog-bound The Lighthouse; Kidman, Robbie and Theron taking on the Fox News patriarchy in Bombshell; and to cap it all off, and possibly the best of the lot, Céline Sciamma’sexquisite Portrait of a Lady on Fire. -

Volume 11 | Issue 15 | April 20, 2021 Fitchburg State University Today Undergraduate Research Conference returns in virtual form Thursday Excellent scholarly and creative work from Fitchburg State students will be celebrated at the virtual Undergraduate Conference for Research and Creative Practice on Thursday. The day will offer a diverse and engaging collection of asynchronous presentations available in an online program. The event is open to the public. In addition to academic talks, poster presentations, and creative writing pieces, the site also features recorded performances from the Chamber Choir and the Fitchbyrds (Fitchburg State’s jazz band) will be viewable. ARTeries, the juried exhibition of student artwork, will also be presented in an online gallery format. A new component of this year’s conference is the Scholarly Gallery, which features student work that was completed in the past year including the Disability Heritage exhibit assembled by English Studies Professor Kisha Tracy’s students and “Our Reckoning,” a showcase of student performances directed by Communications Media Department Professor Mary Vreeland, among other exemplary projects. "We need strong women ready to hit the ground running," Trahan said.
