  • Reportable in the SUPREME COURT of INDIA CIVIL APPELLATE JURISDICTION CIVIL APPEAL NO. 7785 of 2011 State of West Bengal
Reportable IN THE SUPREME COURT OF INDIA CIVIL APPELLATE JURISDICTION CIVIL APPEAL NO. 7785 OF 2011 (Arising out of S.L.P. (C) NO.9154 OF 2008) State of West Bengal … Appellant Versus Howrah Ganatantrik Nagarik Samity & Ors. … Respondents O R D E R A. K. PATNAIK, J. Delay condoned. Leave granted. 2. This is an appeal against the order dated 28.09.2007 of the Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court in Writ Petition No. 7987 (W) of 2002. 3. The facts very briefly are that during the British rule, Victoria Memorial Hall was built in the memory of Queen Victoria in Central Kolkata. After independence, this monument continues to be known for its beautiful architecture and green surroundings. 2 To the north of the Victoria Memorial Hall is a huge stretch of land known as ‘the Maidan’ which is covered by green grass and interspersed with a large number of trees, bushes and shrubs. At the end of about 2 kms. of this greenery is the Esplanade where another monument known as the ‘Sahid Minar’ stands, and by the side of the Sahid Minar is a bus terminus. To protect and preserve the Victoria Memorial Hall and its green surroundings, a public interest litigation (Writ Petition No. 7987(W) of 2002) was filed in the Calcutta High Court by the respondent nos. 1 to 5. 4. After hearing all concerned parties and considering the concerned affidavits and counter-affidavits as well as recommendations of expert bodies including the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (for short ‘NEERI’), the High Court inter alia directed in the impugned order that the bus terminus at Esplanade be shifted to a distant place within six months.

  • A Day in Kolkata"
"A Day in Kolkata" Realizado por : Cityseeker 14 Ubicaciones indicadas Mother House "A Glimpse into the Finest Life" 54 Bose Road is one of the most famous addresses in Kolkata and an important stopover for every tourist visiting the city. The building aptly called Mother House is the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, Mother Teresa's vision to spread hope and love to the despair. Even today, Mother Teresa’s sisters of charity, clad in their trademark blue- by Hiroki Ogawa bordered saris, continue to carry forward her legacy. Visitors can pay their respects at the Mother's tomb and visit the museum displaying objects from her routine life – sandals and a worn-out bowl that stand as true reflections of her simplicity. Invoking peace and a range of different emotions, this place allows you to catch a glimpse into the life of one of the finest human beings to have ever lived. +91 33 245 2277 www.motherteresa.org/ 54/A A.J.C. Bose Road, Missionaries of Charity, Calcuta Raj Bhavan "Royal Residence" During the colonial rule, the Britishers erected magnificent structures and palatial residences, that often replicated buildings and government offices back in England. Raj Bhavan is one of such splendid heritage landmarks in the city of Kolkata. Spread across 27 acres, the wrought iron gates and imposing lions atop, create a majestic allure to the whole place and draw a clear line of distinction between the powerful rulers and the powerless common man. It continued to be the official residence of Governor- Generals and Viceroy until Kolkata ceased to be the capital of India and Delhi came into prominence.

A Platform of Organizations and People Supporting Environment RA 449 Sector IV Salt Lake, Kolkata 700105 Phone No: 9831172060 E mail : [email protected] Ref: SM/ R-Sarovar/ 110 Dt. 18 Nov 2020 To The Hon'ble Chief Minister, Government of West Bengal Nabanna Sub: Feared environmental degradation and destruction of biodiversity at Rabindra Sarovar and Subhas Sarobar during ensuing Chhat Festival Respected Madam, At the outset please accept our festive greetings. You may be aware that Sabuj Mancha is the largest platform of organizations and individuals concerned for environment of the state, and has been consistently trying since 2009 to generate an informed and united voice regarding the critical environmental issues in the state, and share inputs and opinions to government for facilitating actions against range of environmental violations. We like to draw your kind attraction that Rabindra Sarovar, one of the most important National Water bodies and few of the rarest major patches of green and water left in the city, is under threat. You yourself raised the issues regarding Rabindra Sarobar in the past. Rabindra Sarovar plays a major role in maintaining ecological equilibrium in the city, particularly in its southern part, and has never been associated with practicing any religious or social rituals. However during last few years, the Sarovar has been severely affected environmentally; often in the name of culture and religion especially during Chhat Puja. We take this opportunity to remind that a committee involving primarily government officials and experts, set up under NGT order, highlighted the threat to Rabindra Sarobar and recommended the ban on such events in Rabindra Sarobar; based on which NGT passed the ‘ban Chhat puja’ order.
