As part of the events programme accompanying ‘Casting Brilliance’, a major retrospective exhibition of Colin Reid’s work, is this symposium. Looking at contemporary artists’ practice the following speakers Felicity Aylieff, Annie Cattrell, Luke Jerram, Andrew Lacey, and Colin Reid discuss their own experiences and Pam Reekie talks about the development of the Contemporary Glass Society. Felicity Aylieff, Senior Tutor at the Royal College of Art, on the Ceramics and Glass Programme, has most recently been developing her practice working on large scale ceramic pots in collaboration with factories in Jingdezhen, China. Annie Cattrell has been a tutor at the Royal College of Art since 2000 and has lectured in numerous other art colleges. *04/03/1413/03/14. ‘Shifting Perspectives’ At North Lands Creative Glass. Cost: £850.00 (includes course fees, materials and evening meals). “There is rarely one visual experience of an image but rather a series of encounters that shift depending on how and from where the image is viewed…” Carrie Iverson and Jeremy Scidmore will use the techniques of printing and kiln formed glass to investigate these shifting perspectives creating images that do not describe a single viewpoint but are multi-layered descriptions of an object or idea. Using a scientific model of research and focused experimentation, students will learn strategies to develop new work. We will move through a series of exercises to collect, cull, produce, edit and then refine material. Processes include drawing, photography, printmaking on glass, and open-faced kiln casting of textures and found objects. Field trips around Lybster will provide inspiration while new assignments, exercises and discussions each day will build on and refine previous skills. In addition to learning printmaking for glass and glass kiln casting, students will develop research practices and strategies for refinement that can be applied to any art form. Beginners welcome. *28/03/1430/03/14. Kiln-Formed Glass Vessels – At North Lands Creative Glass. Cost: £300.00 (includes course fees, materials and light lunch). Amanda Simmons will lead a three day introduction to kiln formed glass vessels using the variables that affect slumping with gravity to create ‘drop-out’ vessel forms. Amanda’s focus is very much on colour and depth of design using cameo engraving, and how different colours can be achieved by blending transparent and opaque Bullseye Glass. There will be presentations throughout the course of the development of Amanda’s work using this technique, challenging the use of colour and cameo engraved work. Amanda will give guideline firing schedules for all projects on the course and suggest starting points for larger projects. Some previous kiln formed glass experience is required. *Prizes Galore At The Contemporary Glass Society Conference! Five lucky people were winners of stunning glass prizes for the first ever C.G.S. Fundraising Raffle. Glass prizes by some of the UK’s most admired Artists were drawn at the C.G.S. Conference in October. The prizes included stunning artwork by Colin Reid, Peter Layton, ‘Gillies · Jones’ (Stephen Gillies & Kate Jones) and Amanda Simmons, with an original signed drawing by David Reekie. The prize draw caused quite a stir, and there was one winner who was right there to receive her prize – Katharine Coleman M.B.E., who won Colin Reid’s sculpture. An emotional Katharine said “I am greatly moved by Colin’s generosity and astonished by my good fortune. I am still feeling shell-shocked every morning when I walk into our living room and see this incredible piece of glass!” The other winners were: Zoe Sawyers, who won Gillies · Jones’ piece; Su Herbert - Amanda Simmons; Alexandra Archbold – Peter Layton and Jessie Lee – David Reekie’s signed drawing. The raffle raised nearly £3,000.00, and was the first of its kind for the C.G.S. Activities like this form a crucial part of the organization’s funding strategy, and help sustain core C.G.S. activities such as the website, magazine and member services. The raffle was the concluding event in the hugely popular international conference, Glass Skills: Exploring The Fusion Of Art And Technique, staged in partnership with the National Glass Centre at the University Of Sunderland. Nearly 150 people attended this sell out conference that drew on the expertise of respected artists and scholars such as Markku Salo, Geoff Mann, Kéké Cribbs, Wendy Fairclough, Dr. Jack Dawson and Luke Jerram. Glass Skills: Exploring The Fusion Of Art And Technique is part of the C.G.S. Glass Skills 2013 programme – a whole year of exhibitions, events and workshops that highlight the part glassmakers play in keeping ancient skills alive, and in adapting them to create innovative and original art for today. For more details about the raffle, the conference and Glass Skills visit Website www.cgs.org.uk For information about The Contemporary Glass Society contact Victoria Scholes at Email: [email protected] . AJP New Email Address!!!! Please note that my email address will be changing at the end of this year. Although it may seem that I am still using my original address at [email protected] when sending out and forwarding on emails, this is purely because I have to use the 'Aol' server for the time being. Please get used to using the new address at [email protected] forthwith, which for now, will be directed back to me via 'Aol'. Many thanks, Alan.

*Please Note!!! As much as I dislike having to do this, given the volume of work and time I have to spent, promoting, forwarding and generally circulating all of your current glass news, I cannot go on as things stand. So, to this end, I have had to make the decision that from January 2014, information coming in for inclusion in the monthly news letter will remain the same, free of charge, but, anyone wishing me to also forward on their information and news as an individually forwarded out, direct email will be charged a small flat rate fee of £5 in advance.
