  • Gulf Harbour 1. Pre-Trip Planning, Information, and Initial Impression of Gulf Harbour
Gulf Harbour On-site experience audit 1. Pre-trip planning, information, and initial impression of Gulf Harbour Figure 1.0: Google map of Gulf Harbour sub-region On planning a trip to the Gulf Harbour from Central Auckland the initial general impression I had was that the local area revolves around marine based tourism; in particular boating, fishing, and other marine or beach based activities, especially considering it was discovered that the Gulf Harbour has one of New Zealand’s largest marinas. It was important to consider when pre-planning the trip to establish where the Gulf Harbour sub-region was located (outlined in figure 1.0 above, which also included the Army Bay sub-region, between Gulf Harbour and Shakespear Regional Park). Additionally, I had to look at how I was going to get there, how I planned to get around the general area, and what were the important points of interest within the local area i.e. what was there to see and do as a visitor who was there for a day. The points of interest were noted (although there did not appear to be many), and it was decided that while navigating the Gulf Harbour area this would be done using a mixture of public transport means i.e. bus, and by foot, so that as a visitor I could experience the region from the perspective of a tourist who was not driving. 2. Getting there Figure: 2.0: Gulf Harbour ferry brochure The most direct method of getting to the Gulf Harbour area from the Auckland City area is by ferry service.

Opua is the Bay’s deep water port. While there is quite a current running past the wharf, access by water is very easy and the locals are good and friendly. It is a port of entry for overseas vessels, and during the hurricane season in the Pacific (November to May) the wharf’s coin operated shower and laundry facilities are jam packed with foreign adventurers Shop- basic supplies at the shop Fuel - fuel at the shop Water - water at The Moorings wharf Walking track - Opua Forest lookout track – length 1.5 km, time 1 hr return. A pleasant walk through regenerating forest to a lookout over the bay. Access to the track is via School Road, 700m from the waterfront. - Opua to Paihia – length 4.2km, time 2.5 hrs (each way).

6.0 Appendices Hibiscus Coast Subdivision 1.0 Introduction and Background Section Heading - sub text Figure 24. Army Bay. Charlotte Grieve, 2016. 6.1 Analysis Maps Hibiscus Coast Subdivision Auckland Context This map shows the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board area in its wider context within the Auckland Isthmus, located along the east coast of the North Shore. The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board area is split into two subdivisions; Hibiscus Coast Subdivision and East Coast Bays Subdivision. For the purposes of the analysis mapping that follows, each subdivision has been presented separately in order to allow the information to be read at a legible scale. The area is bordered by Rodney, Upper Harbour, and Devonport - Takapuna Local Board areas. The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board area is home to a number of local town centres, including Orewa, Whangaparaoa, Silverdale, Northcross, Browns Bay, and Mairangi Bay. At this scale there are a number of items of interest to be considered in the creation of a Greenways network: • The Te Araroa national walkway runs along the coast of this area. • There are no rail services to the area. • SH1 runs along the western edge of the Hibiscus Coast subdivision. • The board area has an extremely high ratio of coastline to land area. • In terms of overall size, this is one of the largest non-rural board areas. A more detailed analysis of the underlying factors that have shaped this Greenways plan is explained in this section, the Hibiscus Coast subdivision first, followed by East Coast Bays. • Hibiscus Coast Including Whangaparaoa, Orewa, Silverdale, Red Beach and Gulf Harbour
North Hibiscus Coast including Whangaparaoa, Orewa, Silverdale, Red Beach and Gulf Harbour hese formerly sleepy suburban outposts are no longer the exclusive preserve of Tthe elderly and families of holidaymakers. Huge expanses of glossy new homes are testament to the area’s newfound popularity with well-off families looking for safe areas where they can enjoy a traditional Kiwi lifestyle near the sea. Orewa’s 2.5km beach is one of the most popular; the Whangaparaoa peninsula boasts more than a dozen beaches. Gulf Harbour is a fairly new type of development for New Zealand: it includes a harbourside town centre, very expensive canal-side homes with their own private berths, and a topnotch country club. The area’s popularity isn’t just restricted to humans: native birds from the nearby Tiritiri Matangi Island reserve regularly commute to the 376ha Shakespear Regional Park at the end of the peninsula. Population Profile Population 33,294 % Aged Under 15 Years 20.29 % Aged Over 65 Years 19.65 % European 80.48 % Maori 6.81 % Pacific Peoples 1.82 % Asian 3.83 Who Lives There? Orewa has always been popular with retired people who appreciate the flat walk to the beach and the shops, but the largest blip on the population graph of late is professional families settling in for a year-round seaside lifestyle. The extended motorway now makes commuting easier, there are good schools, a strong community spirit, superb beaches, and lots of green space around the houses. On the peninsula there’s a mix of families and couples, including retired people who’ve often lived here a long time.
