British Birds Established 1907; incorporating 'The Zoologist', established 1843 Report on rare birds in Great Britain in 1996 M. J. Rogers and the Rarities Committee with comments by K. D. Shaw and G. Walbridge A feature of the year was the invasion of Arctic Redpolls Carduelis homemanni and the associated mass of submitted material. Before circulations began, we feared the worst: a huge volume of contradictory reports with differing dates, places and numbers and probably a wide range of criteria used to identify the species. In the event, such fears were mostly unfounded. Several submissions were models of clarity and co-operation; we should like to thank those who got together to sort out often-confusing local situations and presented us with excellent files. Despite the numbers, we did not resort to nodding reports through: assessment remained strict, but the standard of description and observation was generally high (indeed, we were able to enjoy some of the best submissions ever). Even some rejections were 'near misses', usually through no fault of the observers. Occasionally, one or two suffered from inadequate documentation ('Looked just like bird A' not being quite good enough on its own). Having said that, we feel strongly that the figures presented in this report are minimal and a good many less-obvious individuals were probably passed over as 'Mealies' C. flammea flammea, often when people understandably felt more inclined to study the most distinctive Arctics. The general standard of submissions varies greatly. We strongly encourage individuality, but the use of at least the front of the standard record form helps. -

BDC/045/3/6 2.0 OVERVIEW OF THE STUDY AREA 11 2.0 OVERVIEW OF THE STUDY AREA 2.1 General 2.1.1 This section provides an overview of the Study Area. It describes the physical and historical influences on the landscape, and identifies the key forces for change affecting landscape character today. This section also provides an overview of landscape character across the Study Area as a whole in its national and county context. 2.2 Physical Influences on the Shaping of the Landscape 2.2.1 The landscape within the Study Area has evolved as a result of an interaction of the physical structure of the landscape and the vegetation and land uses that cover it. To understand what makes a place distinctive, it is useful to identify the key physical influences that have shaped the landscape over time. 2.2.2 The basic structure of the landscape is fundamentally influenced by its underlying rocks and relief. Geology and the processes of weathering, erosion and deposition influence the shape and form of the landscape and its drainage and soils. In turn, these influence patterns of vegetation and land use. Geology, Landform and Drainage 2.2.3 The oldest rocks were laid down between 440 and 360 million years ago. They mainly consist of hard, slaty shales, mudstones and sandstones. Overlying this base are a number of different geological layers that have formed and undergone erosion through marine, fluvial and glacial processes between 135 million years ago to the present to form the rock structure of the Study Area today. -

1919 43 Queen Elizabeth's Visit to Tilbury in 1588 Downloaded from N June and July 1588, just before the Spanish Armada sailed up I the English Channel, an army was assembled at West Tilbury, on the north bank of the Thames. The object was to ensure the defence of London, by blocking access thereto, both by road and by river, in the event of the Armada attempting to land a force, http://ehr.oxfordjournals.org/ as was expected, in the estuary of the Thames. It is well known that the queen visited Tilbury to review the troops assembled there, and that she addressed to them (' like another Boadicea ', as Morant, the Essex historian says) a famous exhortation to valour. But no one has hitherto traced in any detail the events connected with the visit—probably because local knowledge is necessary in order to follow the somewhat slight at University of Arizona on May 27, 2015 contemporary accounts of what took place. Indeed, the prepara- tions made on land for the defence of the country have been extremely little studied, though the preparations made for its defence by sea have been treated exhaustively. The Armada, we must remember, after one false start and other delays, due chiefly to bad weather, set sail finally from Corufia on 12 July, under the duke of Medina-Sidonia. On the 20th, it was sighted near the western entrance to the Channel by the English fleet, which had put out from Plymouth, under Lord Howard of Effingham. As the Armada sailed up the Channel, it was engaged by the English fleet in a running fight, during which several of the largest Spanish ships were either captured or destroyed. -

However individual sites are not enough to make the environment function for the long term, help us adapt to climate change, enable species to thrive or maximise the environments economic value. -

December 2009 Introduction I am pleased to introduce our summary of the South Essex Catchment Flood Management Plan (CFMP). This CFMP gives an overview of the flood risk in the South Essex CFMP area and sets out our preferred plan for sustainable flood risk management over the next 50 to 100 years. The South Essex CFMP is one of 77 CFMPs for England flooding. Tidal flooding from the North Sea and the and Wales. Through the CFMPs, we have assessed inland estuaries, affects Burnham-on-Crouch, North and South flood risk across all of England and Wales for the first Fambridge, South Woodham Ferrers, Purfleet, Tilbury and time. The CFMP considers all types of inland flooding, Canvey Island. The lower reaches of the rivers Crouch, from rivers, ground water, surface water and tidal Horndon, Mardyke and Roach are also influenced by flooding, but not flooding directly from the sea (coastal tides. -
West Thurrock and South Stifford Ward
19 Chapter 19: West Thurrock and South Stifford ward This chapter summarises the activities in West Thurrock and South Stifford ward relating to the project’s construction and its operational phase (when the new road is open). It also explains the measures intended to reduce the project’s impacts on local communities. For more information about the assessments in this chapter and other information available during this consultation, see chapter 1, which also includes a map showing all the wards described in this document. West Thurrock and South Stifford ward does not include any elements of the project’s construction or operation. It has been included in our Ward impact summaries because it would experience impacts due to changes in traffic flows at the Dartford Crossing that are a result of the implementation of the Lower Thames Crossing. We predict a reduction in traffic flow at the Dartford Crossing of 21% in 2029, the project’s opening year, which would have an impact on journey times, noise and air quality in this ward. The reduction in traffic at the Dartford Crossing is one of the key objectives of the project. Within this document, we sometimes advise where additional information can be found in other consultation documents, including the Construction update, Operations update, You said, we did, Register of Environmental Actions and Commitments (REAC), Code of Construction Practice (CoCP), Outline Traffic Management Plan for Construction (OTMPfC) and Design principles. The Essex Field Club
THE ESSEX FIELD CLUB HEADQUARTERS: THE PASSMORE EDWARDS MUSEUM, ROMFORD ROAD, STRATFORD, LONDON, E15 4LZ NEWSLETTER NO. 7 August 1993 FROM THE PRESIDENT At over 100 years old, the Essex Field Club is the senior natural history organisation in the County. Over the last century the Club has made a major contribution to wildlife recording in Essex. Looking back at the achievements of the Club and at the list of past holders of the office is a disconcerting experience for a new President charged with continuing this tradition. One of the great strengths of the club is that we have a distinguished panel of recorders who receive and maintain records of many groups of the County’s wildlife. Recently, however, we have been overshadowed by larger organisations such as Essex Wildlife Trust, whose aims are to deal more specifically with the conservation rather than the recording of the County’s plants and animals. The Council feel that the time has come to raise the profile of the Club and to restore its true position in recording the natural history of the County. We hope to increase membership by encouraging those with more than a passing interest in natural history to join the Club in addition to the conservation organisations to which they might already belong. Probably most of us will belong to several organisations, each with slightly different, though complementary aims. We also hope that the considerable number of people who would like to improve their skills in wildlife identification will be persuaded to realise that attending Essex Field Club meetings is one of the best ways to do this. -
