Parents & Kids Home Activity Package Developed by the Parks & Recreation Staff of Niagara-on-the-Lake Indoor Games Indoor obstacle course Create an indoor obstacle course using furniture and items you have around your house. Some examples can include taping (use painters’ tape) lines on the floor for the kids to balance on, using furniture as obstacles, or even having them balance eggs on spoons while running. Dance Party Have a dance party at home. Play some music and have them dance all day long! You can even add in a rendition where they must freeze when you stop the music (freeze dance)! Hide and Seek Always a great way to keep children having fun! Have one child/parent hide while the other person needs to find them. A spin on this is trying it in the dark with flashlights!! At night turn off all the lights and see if they can find you with a flashlight! Card Games Many kids have different rules with different card games. However, some of the game’s children enjoy playing with cards include: crazy eights, go fish, war, spit, snap, pig, UNO (if you have these cards) etc. All instructions can be found online or ask your child! Straw Maze Create a maze on the ground using painter’s tape. Then give each child a straw and a pompom (or small ball) and have them blow their ball through the maze, Laser Maze Attach crepe paper to the walls of a hallway with painters’ tape in different directions. Then have the kids try and get through the maze without breaking any of the lasers! Tic Tac Toe Create a tic tac toe board on the ground with painters’ tape. Then label 5 paper plates with “O” and 5 paper plates with “X”. Then watch them enjoy! Indoor Scavenger Hunt Create a list of items the children have to find in your house that will have them searching all over the place! The first one back with everything wins! Balloon Tennis Attach paint sticks (or popsicle sticks) to paper plates. Blow up a balloon and hit it back and forth across a line to play a modified game of tennis. Indoor Mini Golf Use a cardboard box to create your own mini golf hole. Create an indoor course using small balls as golf balls and broom handles as putters. Balloon Rockets Hang up a long string in the house, attaching one end to a chair or taped to a wall. At the other end leave the string unattached to thread the straw through. Blow up a balloon as big as you can, tape a straw onto the balloon and then thread the string through the straw. Make sure the balloon hole is facing the opposite way the balloon is going, as the air exhaling is what makes the balloon move quickly. Once the balloon is on the string let it go and see how far it rockets down the string! Paper Airplane Contest Children can fold paper airplanes and see how far they can make them go, adjusting their design to see if they can make it fly farther. Minute to Win It For more Minute to Win It games check out the link listed under Resources. Marshmallow Stack Provide your child with a set of chopsticks or skewers and a handful of marshmallows from lucky charms cereal (could substitute other types of cereals). Give them 1 minute to see how many marshmallows they can stack using ONLY the chopsticks, not their fingers. If the tower falls over they have to start again! Colour Sort Give each child a bag of Cap’n Crunch (could use skittles, Trix or Fruit Loops instead) cereal. In 1 minute, they have to sort the colours into the individual cups. The first one to sort them all wins! Threading Loops Give each child a pipe cleaner and a handful of Fruit Loops. The goal is to get as many Fruit Loops on the pipe cleaner as they can in 1 minute, using ONLY 1 hand. The one with the most wins! Inhaling Skittles Provide children with a pile of Skittles, a cup and a straw. The children need to use the straw to move the skittles from the pile into the cup. Whoever has the most skittles in their cup after a minute wins! Rainbow Balancing Act Provide children with a Popsicle stick and a pile of Fruit Loops. Have them put the Popsicle stick in their mouth and use their hands to make a stack of Fruit Loops on the end of the stick. If the stack falls, they have to start again! The one with the highest stack at the end of a minute wins! Face the Cookie Place a cookie (or marshmallow) on your child’s forehead. The goal is to get the marshmallow in their mouths, using ONLY their face muscles in a minute. Defying Gravity Provide each child with three balloons. The goal is to keep all three balloons in the air for an entire minute. Easter Fortune Joke Teller Instructions on how to make it are listed to the right. The template to print for the fortune-teller is below! Crafts Stress Balls To fill the balloon, you can use various materials such as water beads (Orbeez), cornstarch, flour or rice. All give a different texture. When filling the balloon, do NOT overfill or they will break easily. Sensory Bottles To create sensory bottles, you will need: Empty Bottle (Water bottle, Vos bottle etc.) Water Glitter (fine and chunky) Food Colouring Baby oil or canola/vegetable oil Hot glue gun/glue Children will need to take the empty bottle and fill it about half full of water. Next they can add in some food colour if they wish. After they can add in oil (baby oil is clear, cooking oil will have a yellow colour to it) until it is almost full. Leave a bit of space/air in order for the materials to mix properly. Add in whatever glitter they have chosen (fine and chunky). Lastly put some hot glue on the lid and tighten it down so that it cannot come lose. Now the children can shake all they want and slowly watch the materials separate! Note: The more oil you put in the bottle, the longer the glitter will take to separate. Super Soft Play dough To make play dough you will need 2 parts cornstarch and 1-part hair conditioner (ex. 1 cup cornstarch/ ½ cup hair conditioner). Mix the two ingredients together adding more corn starch if too sticky or more hair conditioner if there is too much cornstarch. Add food colouring to dye it whatever colour you wish! Make sure to store in a sealed plastic bag to make it last longer Slime To make slime you will need: ¼ tsp borax 1 cup water (divided into ½ cups) ½ cup craft glue food colouring Dissolve ¼ tsp borax into ½ cup hot water. Leave aside. Mix ½ cup water with ½ cup glue. Stir in food colouring into the water and glue mixture. When you are happy with the colour, slowly add the borax mixture. As you add it, you will need to continually stir as it will instantly start turning into slime as the borax activates the glue. As it becomes clumped into slime you can pick it up and start kneading it in your hands. The more you knead it, the more it will activate causing it to no longer stick to your hands. If you add too much borax it will become one big hardball rather than stretchy slime. Sometimes it takes time to work with the recipe to make it perfect! Note: Try not to get it onto any good clothes, as it is often hard to get out! When cleaning up the easiest thing to clean slime with is baby wipes! Perler Beads Perler beads are a great way to keep children occupied! You can buy a large box of 20,000 beads from Michaels or even buy the kits! All you need is beads of various colour, pegboards, parchment paper and an iron (dry setting – no water). Children can find all different designs by typing in “Perler Bead Patterns” on Google. After the children put the beads together in the pattern you can place a piece of parchment paper on top of it and iron it down until the beads melt together. After it cools down a bit you can take it off and either iron the other side or leave it! Marshmallow Shooters This is a great way to occupy children for hours! All you need is a plastic cup, a balloon, hot glue and mini marshmallows. First you need to cut the end of the plastic cup off and cut half of the balloon off. Then tie a knot into the end of the balloon and put a strip of hot glue all the way around the end of the cup you cut off. Then stretch the balloon over the end where you put the hot glue before it dries. Then grab some marshmallows and start shooting! Butterfly Bracelets Print off the template below and decorate the butterflies. Follow the instructions to the right to put the bracelets together. Challenge yourself by trying to make a flower or superhero instead of a butterfly Shaving Cream Dyed Easter Eggs Fill a tin pan with shaving cream. Place a few dots of food dye throughout the cream. Swirl the colours together without mixing them completely. Roll the eggs in the shaving cream and let them sit covered for 10-15 minutes.
