    • eam Players T A Real Welcome to Team Players, a new feature about members of staff who have done something remarkable outside the office and how this helps them in the work place. ‘HURDLES KING’ Henry Tang Hon-sing, Hong Kong record holder of men’s 110 metre hurdles and 400 metre hurdles, has raced against some of the world’s best hurdlers, including China’s Olympic gold medalist Liu Xiang. He now works at the Watsons Athletic Club in Hong Kong. Sphere sat down with him to find out how being a leading athlete has helped him in his personal and professional life. How did you get involved in athletics? When I was in Form 1, I participated in the school’s sports meet. I got into the 100 metre finals and came eighth, which really meant last. I was quite frustrated and discouraged. Kids like to win. A few months later, there was an inter-school sports meet, so I started doing some training myself. Then in Form 2, I started growing and suddenly ran the 100 metres over a second faster, so sports teachers started to notice me and athletic clubs wanted to recruit me. Then I started training with professional coaches. Why the 110m hurdles? At 19, I got injured during an international competition and stopped competing for over a year. When I started again, I wasn’t very fast and was really upset. Then I saw some people hurdling. At the time hurdling wasn’t popular but I tried and it felt good. The more I trained, the more I liked it.

  • 7 Fantastic People
7 Fantastic people FKids’ Magazine October 2008 My hero Last month we asked you to tell us about your heroes and lots of you did. Here are two of your favourites. My hero is Liu Xiang. He is an amazing athlete. He started practising for the 110-metre hurdles twelve years ago. Sun Hai Ping has been his trainer since 1999. Together they have won many competitions. Four years ago, Liu won an Olympic gold medal. In 2006, he set a new world record with a time of 12.88 seconds. Liu Xiang had lots of difficulties but he never stopped trying. When he was at sports school, some older boys bullied him. They put his toothbrush in the toilet and hid his keys. Liu never complained, even when training was very difficult and his legs hurt badly. He fought off problems and got great results. However, at the Beijing Olympics, two injuries stopped Liu from competing. All of China was very disappointed! I know Liu will compete successfully in the future because he never gives up. I really admire Liu Xiang. When things are difficult, I am going to try harder. Maybe one day I will win a gold medal too! Angela Lui, 12 years old Yang Liwei is my hero. He has been in the Chinese army since 1983. At first he was a pilot but ten years ago, he started astronaut training. In 2003, he became the first Chinese to travel in space. Today Yang is a trainer. He has helped train astronauts for three years. Yang worked very hard.

Deng, Guosheng, and Jeffreys, Elaine. 2019. ‘Celebrity Philanthropy in China: Reconfiguring Government and Non-government Roles in National Development’, The China Quarterly, 237, pp. 217–240. doi:10.1017/S0305741018001364 Celebrity Philanthropy in China: Reconfiguring Government and Non- government Roles in National Development DENG Guosheng1 Elaine Jeffreys (corresponding author)2 Abstract This article provides the first comprehensive analysis of the development of and public responses to celebrity-fronted philanthropy in the People’s Republic of China. It explores the extent and nature of celebrity philanthropy with reference to a sample of mainland Chinese celebrities in entertainment and sports. It then draws on interviews conducted with employees of large charities to examine the kinds of links that are being forged between China’s not-for-profit sector and commercial organizations managing the work of celebrities. Finally, it analyses the responses to a national survey on celebrity and philanthropy. We conclude that the relationship between China’s government, not-for-profit and celebrity sectors is becoming more professionalized and organized. This development reveals how the roles and capacities of government are being reconfigured and expanded, even as it also enhances the scope for action and the influence of new social actors and organizations to address government-led national development issues.
