EXHIBITIONS THEATRE & DANCE MUSIC SPORTS SPECIAL EVENTS Madrid. Save the Date 2018 | 1 So many tales to tell What was Madrid like two hundred years ago? Like many of the buildings that are now part of our heritage, Gran Vía avenue did not exist yet, but the city was already starting to take on its present-day appearance. On 23 April 1818, the first stone was laid for what would become theTeatro Real, the city’s new opera house. This year the iconic building is celebrating its bicentenary, and it’s doing so in style, revisiting some of the classics in its regular repertoire, like Aida, and staging major premieres such as Dead Man Walking -many will remember the film version- and Street Scene. The Prado Museum will also commemorate its two-hundredth anniversary in 2019, although the celebrations will officially kick off at the end of 2018. Fortuny and Rubens are two of the masters whose works will be featured in temporary exhibitions at the museum which was originally built to house the Royal Cabinet of Natural History. They won’t be the only artists Madrid will pay tribute to this year, however, as the 2018 exhibitions calendar will feature shows with artworks by Andy Warhol, Toulouse-Lautrec, Giacometti, Sorolla, Vasarely and Monet. We’ll feel the weight of history at extraordinary exhibitions like Auschwitz and at the theatre, thanks to stage adaptations of plays as representative of our heritage as Divinas Palabras (Teatro Español) and El Concierto de San Ovidio (Teatro María Guerrero). Madrid’s theatre scene is more vibrant than ever and theatregoers seeking more avant-garde alternatives will also be well served thanks to a packed calendar with a strong representation of female artists, including Sara Molina, Mónica Valenciano and Angélica Liddel. -

Meeting Madrid
2017: A Year of Round Numbers If we could travel to the future, we’d probably say that 2017 was the year of WorldPride, a celebration of equal rights which three million people are expected to attend. Because whoever you love, Madrid loves you. Just a mention of this year would be enough to relive the music festivals that await us: Mad Cool, Dcode and the Veranos de la Villa Festival which has already become a classic. Like a beautiful mirage, several of the season’s exhibitions would also appear: the Escher retrospective, which has marked the grand opening of Gaviria Palace as a cultural centre, and the show devoted to the Hispanic Society opening in early April at the Prado Museum. And it’s very likely that some of the theatre productions being performed for the first time will be consigned to posterity: Ushuaia by Alberto Conejero at Teatro Español and the adaptation of En la orilla by Rafael Chirbes at Centro Dramático Nacional. If we’ve chosen to use the term ‘probably’ rather than ‘definitely’ it’s because we don’t want to blow our own trumpet, but no one can deny that 2017 will be remembered in Madrid for its round numbers: the 10-year anniversary of Matadero Madrid; 15 for La Casa Encendida; 20 for PHotoEspaña and for the reopening of Teatro Real; 25 for the Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums; 40 for Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa and the Madrid Marathon; and the fourth centenary of Plaza Mayor, whose first stone was laid on 2 December 1617. -

I recieved a call around March of '94 from Bruce Dauser, a printer who had called me once after seeing my posters in the Art of Rock. He then had stopped at my booth at the '63 Hall of Flowers(SF) poster show. Bruce's call was the beginning of a close friendship, working together with Chet Helms on many Family Dog posters. Bruce had gotten word that Boots Hughston was looking for a poster artist for the Helms Tribute Benefit that he was promoting. There already were several posters being done, including ones by Wes Wilson and Alton Kelley; but rock superstar Steve Miller had just signed on and they wanted a poster to have him included on the complete lineup.
