  • History and Cultural Heritage of an Ancient Village Cuandixia
2020 International Conference on Economics, Education and Social Research (ICEESR 2020) History and Cultural Heritage of an Ancient Village Cuandixia Jiayu Li1, Jing Xianyu2* 1Middle School affiliated to Beijing Normal University, China 2Department of Tourism English, Beijing Union University, Beijing, China Keywords: History; Culture; Change; Heritage Abstract: The ancient village Cuandixia bears abundant Chinese culture, especially that of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The thesis deals with its historical culture from three aspects: the formation and history of the village, the cultural relics of various historical periods, and the heritage of its historical culture at present day. The change of the village proves that culture is a mobile process changing with different historical backgrounds. Faced with the surge of globalization, Cuandixia villagers and all the citizens of Beijing share the duty to protect and inherit local culture. 1. Introduction Known as the “Potala Palace” of west Beijing, Cuandixia village is located at the Northwest of Zhaitang township, Mentougou District. The village keeps well some ancient architectures and cultures like the courtyard houses of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with ancient roads, walls, wells and miscellaneous things to reveal the original appearance of an old village. Ancient villages are important sites to remember the tradition and inherit the historical cultures, and “a cultural memory is a memory shared by a nation or a country formed through a long historical development, recorded by and inherited through a certain culture, and it is the unique cultural logo of a certain nation”[1]. Understanding the historical culture of Cuandixia village helps to enrich the interpretation of Chinese culture, strengthening our national confidence and inheriting its unique cultures.

  • Exploring Household Energy Consumption Patterns and Inequalities in Sustainability Transitions
Master’s Thesis - MSc Sustainable Development Exploring household energy consumption patterns and inequalities in sustainability transitions Evidence from residential energy consumption in Beijing Student name: Giulia Viero Supervisor: Dr. Bettina Bluemling Student number: 5791901 Email address:[email protected] E-mail address: [email protected] Track: Earth System Governance Second reader: Professor Frank Course code: GEO4-2321 (45 ECTS) Biermann st Date: January 31 , 2017 Email address:[email protected] Summary It is broadly recognised that demographic changes and human economic activities substantially contribute to global environmental issues, such as climate change and air pollution, with negative health externalities. Among total energy consumption, energy use in residential buildings is a large contributor to carbon emissions. Moreover, significant inequalities exist in energy use-related emissions among household groups along the energy ladder. Governments are seeking to adopt alternative energy solutions to phase out fossil fuels, both at the household- and residential sector-level. Among all countries, China figures the highest solar energy installed capacity and critical technical potential to cost-effectively improve buildings energy efficiency. The adoption of sustainable alternatives in residential buildings can help reducing carbon emissions, and addressing inequality, as the ability to access technology and/or infrastructure across urbanised and rural areas. It is thus necessary to understand the conditions under which such measures can be applied locally, without exacerbating contextual inequalities. The overarching question is: To what extent and owing to what factors can households climb up on top of the energy ladder towards the adoption of solar energy and energy efficiency technologies in Beijing? And can sustainability transitions encompass a diversity of household groups?.

By promoting a green economy, such zones of rural–urban interface/interactions attract more and more public investments, business investors, and leisure seekers. Taking the Yanqi Nightless Valley of Huairou District, and the Ganyugou Village and Xibailianyu Village of Miyun District of Beijing as case studies, this paper investigates the private entrepreneurship, the local peasants’ business drive, and the role of the local governments in integrating the mountainous “backwater” into Beijing’s globalizing economy. Their joint efforts in reconstructing and branding rural tourism resorts, and the ways in which the rural socioeconomic setting was transformed into a post-productive, consumption-dominated, and creative-cum-quality service center is analyzed. The paper analyzes the success and failure of Beijing’s rural tourism business operations, and links their marketing with the capital city’s ambition to brand itself into a globalizing city. Results show that success is highly dependent on physical connectivity. Those seated at the “semi-periphery” with highways or other access corridors are capable of attracting large city clientele.

  • Delineating an Integrated Ecological and Cultural Corridor Network: a Case Study in Beijing, China
sustainability Article Delineating an Integrated Ecological and Cultural Corridor Network: A Case Study in Beijing, China Yanyan Li 1 , Xinhao Wang 2 and Xiaofeng Dong 3,* 1 School of Civil Engineering, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing 100044, China; [email protected] 2 School of Planning, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH 45221, USA; [email protected] 3 College of Architecture & Design, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing 100044, China * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +86-1881-1791-075 Abstract: This study shows that an integrated ecological and cultural corridor network can help guide city development strategies to better preserve ecological and cultural assets. Traditionally, protection zones and suitable development areas are often identified by separately considering natural elements of the ecosystem and elements of cultural significance. To achieve the purpose of cohesively protecting areas of ecological and/or cultural significance, we have developed a corridor-based spatial framework by integrating ecological and cultural assets. Ecological sources are identified by combining protection prioritization, nature reserves, and water bodies. Ecological corridors are delineated by using the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model on a resistance surface constructed from land-use data to connect ecological sources. Ecologically important areas are then delineated by creating a 5-km buffer zone from ecological sources and ecological corridors. Cultural corridors are historical routes and rivers surrounded by abundant cultural nodes. Like ecologically important areas, culturally important areas are delineated by creating a 5-km buffer zone from cultural corridors. Comprehensive regions are the overlap of ecologically and culturally important areas. Finally, the integrated network connects all comprehensive regions following ecological corridors and cultural corridors in such a way that the largest number of ecological sources and cultural nodes are reached.
