It don’t run in our blood.” This latest trending song by Lorde can also be applied to our status in the Nordic ski world, on a variety of levels. First of all, cross country skiing doesn’t quite hold the highest status in the pantheon of sports activity here in the United States. Interviewed for a recent article in a local magazine, a veteran of the cross country ski scene (this writer) stated, “We’re still a tiny, tiny niche in the big scheme of things.” And in our little neck of the woods—the Far West—we face an even greater handicap, where our local population bases are far enough away that our “niche” sport can easily be forgotten, especially in these recent years of lower snow packs and warmer temperatures. Out of sight, out of mind truly applies to skiing in California. But here in the mountains, and even with all the “distractions” of other sports such as soccer, baseball, and even alpine ski- ing, our little Nordic world is thriving. The first hint comes from all the incredibly successful and growing Youth Programs we have going on here in the Truckee-Tahoe area. For instance, in basically its first season, the Tahoe City Nordic Development Team this past summer sported well over 20 kids having a great time running, hiking, biking, and even rollerskiing throughout the local trails. And the stalwart mainstays of youth development—the Auburn Ski Club and Sugar Bowl Academy pro- grams—also maintain thriving programs. Far West Nordic’s Summer Camps were extremely popular this year as well. And the Alder Creek and North Tahoe Middle School Ski Teams, among others, again have huge numbers of enthusiastic athletes. Another sign of great strength for our little division is one of our newest: The Far West ELITE TEAM. This will be our stron- gest ever, and you can read all about it on page 12 of this Nordic News. Other great articles in this annual newsletter include an awesome History of Skating by none other than 14-time National Champion, Nancy Fiddler, plus an inspiring story by John Gerbino about vision-impaired skier Walt Raineri, describing his training and race day exploits at the Great Ski Race with an- other local Olympian, Beth Reid. And rounding out our current issue is some insight into the life of one of our most talented Junior racers, Skyler Mullings of the Sugar Bowl Academy, and a hilarious look at skiing and racing in the Southern Hemisphere by former Far West Nordic Head Coach, Ben Grasseschi. And finally, our feature article from Brad Rassler describes two of the most successful cross country ski programs in the country, both featuring women in Nordic. The U.S. Women’s Cross Country Ski Team is making international head- lines, both on and off the snow, and there is nothing more inspiring than a description of the “Fast and Female” program we had the chance to experience first hand here in Tahoe last April. So let the rest of the world have their football, baseball, and NASCAR, watching TV on their couch. We crave a different kind of buzz. IT was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed. With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world, the blood pounded in his head, and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning to bring down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history. With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his stolid head, and his eyes all orange flame with the thought of what came next, he flicked the igniter and the house jumped up in a gorging fire that burned the evening sky red and yellow and black. He strode in a swarm of fireflies. He wanted above all, like the old joke, to shove a marshmallow on a stick in the furnace, while the flapping pigeon- winged books died on the porch and lawn of the house. While the books went up in sparkling whirls and blew away on a wind turned dark with burning. Montag grinned the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame. He knew that when he returned to the firehouse, he might wink at himself, a minstrel man, Does% burntcorked, in the mirror. Later, going to sleep, he would feel the fiery smile still gripped by his Montag% face muscles, in the dark.

    For Immediate Release Contact: Nancy Knutson 715-634-5025 [email protected] Bringing the Birkebeiner Legacy to Life at the Birkie Descendants of Founding Birkie Skier Selected as 2019 Birkebeiner Warriors & Inga Hayward, WI (February 23, 2019) – The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation is pleased to announce the selection of the trio of cross-country skiers who will depict two Birkebeiner Warriors and Inga, the mother of baby Prince Haakon. On February 23, 2019, William Andresen (Ironwood, MI), Carolyn Andresen Warren (Ironwood, MI), and David Andresen (Ironwood, MI) will portray Torstein, Skjervald, and Inga, respectively. Each year, in homage to the legacy of the race, a trio reenacts the historic trek of warriors Torstein and Skjervald, and Inga (mother of Prince Haakon) on wooden skis and in full costume along the entire 55K classic American Birkebeiner cross-country course. Inga and the Warriors will carry a baby doll along the race course, and pick-up a real baby “prince” prior to skiing down Main Street to the finish line. The portrayal is a true celebration of the roots, legacy and traditions of the race. What makes this year’s Inga and Warriors selection all the sweeter, is that the trio are the descendants of Karl Andresen, one of the original 35 founding American Birkebeiner skiers from 1973. Karl’s son, William (Torstein), skied in the first Kortelopet at the age of twelve and has since racked-up a total of seven Kortelopet races and eighteen American Birkebeiner races. Karl’s grandchildren, David (Skjervald) and Carolyn (Inga), have never experienced a year without a Birkie, including skiing in eleven Barnebirkie races each.

Why are you interested in being a member of the ABSF Board of Directors and what knowledge and skills do you possess that can benefit the organization? In the early 1980’s I read about the American Birkebeiner while working as a research fellow at McGill University in Montreal. I had taken up cross country skiing in Montreal and had done the Canadian Ski Marathon a few times as well as the Riviere Rouge race. I was looking for a job and while UW-Madison was trying to recruit me, the thought of skiing the Birkie tipped the scale. Well, thirty two Birkie’s later, the race has become a major part of my adult life. My family is also involved and my older son is a Birkie skier. This year I was reminded of the special place of the Birkie when listening to WORT in the comfort of my condo as the 6-hour plus finishers were interviewed. The thing that impressed me most was the joy and enthusiasm of the many young male and female competitors who despite their exhaustion, laughed and recounted the fun of the race and that they would do it all again, ‘Now that’s something worth preserving and promoting I thought!’ As a veteran ski racer both in the North America and in Europe where I have done the Norwegian Birkie and the Marcialonga I know what it takes for a ski race to be successful (apart from good snow!) I ran the Birke Skiers for Cure Program in 2009-2012 and raised over $300K for MS research.

    Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance Skiing and Teaching Methods PREFACE / CODE OF ETHICS PREFACE The C.S.I.A. certification program is made up of several components from the instructing discipline as well as from the coaching discipline. This manual is one of the components meant to be used on C.S.I.A. instructor certification courses. It also provides interesting reading and background information for any avid skier and student of technique. Ski instruction has matured into a full-fledged part of the ski industry. Ski instructors of today must be more than accomplished skiers. They are viewed as ambassadors of the ski resort and skiing generally. A successful ski instructor is versed in learning styles and a variety of teaching methods to satisfy the demands of all types of clients. Ski instructors also receive training in guest service and customer relations to prepare for a career serving ski resorts and their clients. A well-trained ski pro is a valuable asset to any ski resort. This manual is reviewed and updated to reflect changes as they occur in skiing and teaching. Its purpose is to serve as a resource and reference in all things relevant to ski teaching. The information on these pages is the result of years of ski teaching, valuable lessons learned from other ski nations, as well as countless hours of discussion and experimentation among experienced ski teachers. It is the hope of the Steering Committee that in the future this manual will continue to serve as a useful resource that professional instructors can refer to.

We are extremely proud to be the first city to achieve this record. To celebrate our unique history, we decided to name the event the Centenary Championships. The Centenary Championships are both an exciting and carefully prepared world-class sports event and one of the festivities that celebrate the centenary of Finland’s independence. A rare occasion for us Finns – and hopefully for our international guests. Lahti offers an optimal setting for record-breaking performances. The traditional venue has undergone extensive renovation and is now a fully functioning stadium that meets today’s requirements. We are also proud to have Vierumäki Olympic Training Center as our athlete’s village that allows the athletes to unwind and focus all their energy on performing at their best. We hope that the 2017 World Championships will leave their mark on future decades of sports events in Lahti and in Finland. The event has gained a great deal of popularity among young people, and we will soon have a new generation of volunteers for sports events.
