AAUW-Nevada County January 2019 Vol 82 #5

JANUARY BRANCH MEETING SATURDAY JANUARY 19 9:30 AM Peace Lutheran Church 828 West Main, Grass Valley

By Fran Erickson, Co-VP Programs

Making the Most of the Rest of Your Life

January’s speaker is so appropriate as January is the time when we do some introspection about our lives and make some plans for ourselves.

Jan Fishler’s talk will be taken from the title of her latest book, “Making the Most of the Rest of Your Life”. Her presentation will address some questions our 50-plus tribe faces such as: Are you happy with your accomplishments? Have you done enough? Have you earned the right to put your needs first? and What's next?

At this point in our lives either our careers are winding down or have been completed. It is a time for reflecting on one’s life accomplishments and future plans as well. How does one navigate the rest of life in ways that deliver as much joy, happiness and satisfaction as possible? The presentation will help answer these questions. By its end, you will have a mini plan for making the most of the rest of your life.

Jan Fishler began her career writing and producing informational and motivational videos. In addition to developing more than 100 corporate scripts, she produced “The Path to Publication”, a DVD series. It was filmed at the Community of Writers Conference at Squaw Valley and contains advice from authors that include Amy Tan, Anne Lamont, Janet Fitch and Mark Childress. In 2010 she self- published an adoption memoir, “Searching for Jane, Finding Myself”. She has also written for Vietnam National Magazine and The Union newspaper. She has a BA in English Literature from Ohio University and a MA in Educational Technology from California State University, San Francisco.

We hope you will be there to enjoy this informative and helpful presentation. See you there!

President's Letter By Virginia Horowitz, President

Looking Back ... Looking Forward

January is the month that many of us typically take some time to reflect on the past year and examine our goals for the upcoming year. Doing so is not a new concept. In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus is known as the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past. So, the month we call January has an ancient history.

Looking back on our Branch’s activities, beginning with event planning in July, more than 100 members and guests celebrated and acknowledged the very capable young women who attended Tech Trek Camp sponsored by our Branch The Welcome Back Brunch was a huge success and set the tone for October and November’s well-attended General Meetings.

We were privileged to learn about Activism and Identity from Dr. Anya Stanger, PhD, at the October General Meeting. Nancy Baglietto, Executive Director of Hospitality House, spoke to us in November about the day to day challenges and successes of providing shelter, housing and culinary job training to many homeless in our area. Nancy brought two former guests to our meeting to share their powerful stories and provide inspiration to our audience members.

Our Holiday Party on December 6th was very well attended and gave everyone a wonderful opportunity to mix and mingle and enjoy delicious food at Lefty’s in Nevada City. The quilt donated for our fund raising raffle by Virginia Kingston was won by Deborah York. Over $900 was raised through this raffle event, which began in September. The funds raised help support our Branch Operations. Thank you everyone who purchased raffle tickets and a BIG Thank YOU to Virginia for the beautiful quilt. Looking ahead to 2019 we can anticipate excellent programs as well, thanks to our Program Co-VP’s Fran Erickson and Jo Ann Schilling. On January 19th, Jan Fisher, MA, author, presenter, and workshop leader, will speak about her latest book, What Are You Doing With the Rest of Your Life?

Remember to buy your tickets for Tapas and Trivia, our fundraiser this year for AAUW and Local Scholarships. This gathering, held on January 26th at Peace Lutheran Church, is going to be a fun and exciting event with ample opportunities to participate in silent and live auctions, in addition to being on a Trivia Team or providing support as an audience member.

See this Lodestone for more information, or contact Bup Greenwood.

February’s program, which is on the 16th, will feature Patt Lind-Kyle who will bring her wealth of knowledge and experience about Aging Wisely to our audience. We will also learn more about Public Policy involvement opportunities from Carolyn Feuille, our Public Policy Chair.

The March 16th meeting will focus on representatives from AAUW Funds, Tech Trek, and Local Scholarships who will share their stories and experience with us. Come hear what our Branch support has enabled these outstanding young women to experience and achieve. This is always a very popular program and an opportunity to see the inspiring results your donations bring.

On April 20th we will learn about The Village, which is a non-profit, national organization that enables people to remain in their homes as they age. The speaker will be Jeanne Scarmon, MA, who is the current Board President of this organization.

Our Annual Meeting and Luncheon is scheduled for May 18th at Lefty’s. Details will be forthcoming in future Lodestone Newsletters and announced at General Meetings as the date approaches. This is the meeting where AAUW–NC Board Officers are installed.

Your presence and involvement greatly contribute to the success of our Branch. We invite you to learn more about opportunities for involvement and leadership. Contact Sue Miller (contact information in our Directory) to learn about volunteer leadership opportunities.

If you would like to be part of our Fundraiser event, “Tapas and Trivia”, on January 26th, please contact Katherine (Bup) Greenwood (contact information in our Directory). This is our one fundraiser of the year and proceeds support AAUW Funds and Local Scholarships.

YOUR voice and input matter to us. So, please choose YOUR way to get involved and support our Branch. I invite you to consider making that a personal goal for 2019. Happy New Year!!

Please put these important dates on your calendar and plan to attend!

AAUW Fund News By Melanie Heckel

This month I would like to focus on the Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF). As you know, LAF supports lawsuits that promote equity and safety for women and girls in schools, colleges and the workplace.

At the end of October, AAUW’s LAF hosted its annual call previewing U.S. Supreme Court cases relevant to our mission. Deborah Vagins, our Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Research, focused primarily on cases that involved worker’s rights and reproductive choice. I was able to listen in and found it to be most enlightening.

The Supreme Court has not yet selected which cases it will hear in the 2019 session. Sadly, AAUW is hoping several cases of concern to us will not be heard by the Supreme Court as they have favorable rulings at the Circuit Court level that may be overturned given the current makeup of the Supreme Court.

Rizo v. Fresno County Office of Education (FCOE): AAUW hopes the Ninth Circuit Court decision stays in place finding it illegal to use prior salary to determine current wages based on the Equal Pay Act of 1963. Fortunately, California has passed legislation to ban this practice. Therefore, I’m not sure why this is still an active case as Fresno is in California, but it has in fact been appealed by FCOE to the Supreme Court.

R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes Inc. v. EEOC and Altitude Express Inc. v. Zarda: These cases hinge on whether the definition of “sex” under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ought to include sexual orientation and gender identity. AAUW believes it should include both. The plaintiff in the first case was fired after transitioning from male to female. The Sixth Circuit Court ruled in her favor, but this has been appealed to the Supreme Court. In the second case, a high diving instructor was fired for being gay. The current Department of Justice has a new interpretation of the Civil Rights Act stating that protection based on “sex” is solely based on gender at birth. The Second Circuit Court ruled against Zarda after the DOJ intervened on behalf of the EEOC. Zarda has appealed this decision to the Supreme Court. This just in! Andersen v. Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri: This case is about reproductive rights and AAUW supports Planned The Supreme Court has Parenthood’s litigation arguing that state governments should not decided not to hear the be able to bar eligible health care providers that provide a full appeal of several states, range of reproductive health care service from the Medicaid leaving in place federal program for non-medical reasons. court rulings prohibiting states from denying AAUW has also signed onto an amicus brief challenging the Trump Medicaid coverage to administration's contraception coverage rules, Massachusetts v. Planned Parenthood. Health and Human Services."

Massachusetts is trying to protect women from the harms that will result from the federal government’s attempt to nullify the provisions of the Affordable Care Act by allowing employers to withhold contraceptive care for employees and dependents based upon religious or moral grounds. 6

This is it! Fundraiser January 26 By Bup Greenwood, President-Elect

This is the month everything comes together for a fun and productive afternoon raising money for our annual scholarships, and for AAUW Funds grants/fellowships. You, our members, have been terrific!

Members have donated wine generously: we are set for our minimum, and further bottles help in case of higher turnout. Interest Groups have donated money and are creating attractive auction baskets. Volunteer cooks, led by Deb Cubberley, have their recipes ready and are gearing up to serve 120-150 people a variety of delicious appetizers. Deb still needs cooks/helpers—email her if you can help.

Bernadette’s recruiters are signing up teams to compete for the Trivia Trophy—and Jennifer Wilkerson and Susan Rogers have the team to beat! The Trivia categories of "Game On", "In the Spotlight", and "Art & Authors" give everyone a chance to shine, though the questions are tightly guarded. If you’d like to join in, the Team deadline is January 18. See Team Signups section below for more detail.

On to the Treasures! We are thrilled about the offerings from Pacific Auction Company, and we think you will be, also. Melanie has her eye on a stately metal yard-art stork, and hints a citrine necklace would make a great Valentine’s present. The offerings are more upscale than our prior auctions, a varied, interesting array of treasures. Items include art, historical items, sports and entertainment collectibles, lovely jewelry, and memorable travel experiences.

How about a week in a Tuscan villa for 10, or a week for eight in a ridge-top home in Anderson Valley wine country, or a luxurious week-long stay for two in a Bali villa? You can support our local stars, bidding on a dinner for six cooked by our own chef Deb Cubberley, and pies by locally-famous pastry chef John Shulse. For more details on these fabulous prizes, see below.

What can you do? Come, of course! Join the audience, cheer for a team. Buy tickets for yourself and for friends, even if you can’t attend. Have friends who love history? Invite them to see some of the wonderful memorabilia offered. We have many members who travel; consider making one of the trips your special experience for 2019. Family reunion in Italy? Perfect. Plus, our event is just two weeks before Valentine’s Day. Get someone a special present, or ask your partner to buy your present here.

Tickets are available at SPD/Nevada City, Briar Patch, The Bookseller, our web page, or at the January meeting. $25. Buy one, buy several, come support women’s education at whatever level is comfortable for you.

. . . & Treasures! 7

Thinking of traveling in 2019?

Several members have asked for details of the trips offered at the Tapas & Trivia Auction so they can plan ahead: here they are. If you bid on one of these special trips, you’ll be supporting our Scholarship Fundraiser at the same time. The opening bids are far below retail, so you may grab a great value. If you have friends who might enjoy these opportunities, spread the word. And, of course, you only pay if your bid is the final, winning bid. – Bup Greenwood

Just a reminder: For anyone wishing to contribute to our Nevada County Tech Trek program, checks should be made out to “AAUW Nevada County Branch” with Tech Trek on the memo line. Thanks for all the support! ______UP YOUR GAME By Deborah Cubberley, Membership VP

Membership at the Nevada County Branch is at 124 with some possible new members. How fortunate we are to have such strong support in our little community.

Membership in itself is productive as your dues go to support the AAUW mission, but consider your personal situation and try to evaluate how you can help with a little more time or resources…take it up a notch. Of course, there are myriad ways to do this, but right now I am thinking about our new fundraiser, Tapas and Trivia on January 26th. If you are good at Trivia, have a competitive spirit, and love to laugh, consider joining a trivia team or creating a trivia team with your like-minded friends. Contact Bernadette Sylvester for information about what’s involved.

If, on the other hand, trivia is not your strong suit, please consider helping behind the scenes at the event. We need help preparing the tapas before the event, help plating the tapas at the event, help with set up, help underwriting the cost of the tapas, et cetera. If you are at all interested in helping with any aspect of the food, please contact me, Deborah Cubberley.

Please remember that this is our only formal fundraiser this year. It is new and we want it to be a success. The scholarships that we fund depend upon it.

Nevada County Branch Public Policy By Carolyn Feuille

Results of the Member Survey on Public Policy Priorities

In the month of December the Nevada County Branch Public Policy team conducted a short survey to identify members’ preferences for advocacy topics in 2019. We thank all of you who participated.

The topic with the highest number of responses is Civil Rights. In AAUW this includes affirmative action, health care and reproductive rights, freedom from violence, voting rights, and LGBT rights. The second highest topic is Economic Security which includes pay equity and career advancement, minimum wage, paid sick days at work, and protecting the Affordable Care Act.

Interestingly, Title IX received the fewest responses of the three topics, yet it does relate to civil rights for girls in public schools. It is in the spotlight today because the federal Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights is planning to stop fully enforcing the legal requirements to protect girls from discrimination, including sexual harassment. AAUW is alerting its members to write letters to Education Join AAUW for the Martin Luther King Day Annual Love Secretary DeVos. So, we will take Walk on January 21! action on this topic in the coming months Walk downtown Grass Valley from the Del Oro theater to the Elks Lodge, where there will be music, dancing, art, Our first focus in AAUW advocacy in movies, workshops, and more. 2019 will be on Civil Rights starting with participating in the Martin Luther To help with our table set-up and interacting with the King Day second annual Love Walk public, e-mail Carolyn Feuille at [email protected] on January 21.
