Just Nine for Epsom's Derby Carlton House Returns A FRIDAY, JUNE 1, 2012 732-747-8060 • TDN Home Page Click Here DEFINITELY MAYBE? CARLTON HOUSE RETURNS A WINNER Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Susan Magnier’s Aside from Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), Carlton House J “TDN Rising Star” J Maybe (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (Street Cry {Ire}) was last summer’s major talking horse failed to fire on all cylinders when losing her unbeaten early in the season but, things had gone eerily quiet tag in last month’s G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket-- regarding The Queen’s colt following a lackluster fourth her first start since annexing in last June’s August’s G1 Moyglare Stud S. at G1 Irish Derby. The Curragh--but she can follow Well-supported for the stable’s lead when lining up this seasonal for today’s G1 Investec Oaks at return, the Epsom. She was one of the main handsome sufferers when Gray Pearl (GB) 4-year-old came (Excellent Art {GB})’s fatal injury from off the pace caused a significant delay to to land Thursday’s proceedings at Newmarket, but G3 Brigadier Maybe Racing Post/Cranham stablemate Power (GB) (Oasis Gerard S. at Dream {GB}) bounced back from Sandown. “We Carlton House Racing Post/Cranham his Rowley Mile reverse to garner last week’s G1 Irish were happy with 2000 Guineas, and confidence is high she can repeat his home work and had him as fit as we could without the dose stepped up a half mile for this comeback. “The taking any chances,” trainer Sir Michael Stoute ground was a bit on the slow side, but we were very explained. “We were hopeful, as his home work had happy with her run in the [1000] Guineas,” commented been of good quality. There weren't any serious trainer Aidan O’Brien. “It was her first run of the year problems last year, but they were enough to prevent and perhaps she laboured a little bit through the race, him from running for the rest of the season.” As for but she was in the stalls a long time and lots of things what comes next for the bay, Stoute added, “We happened. She is by Galileo and has a fast pedigree so wouldn’t want to go more than 10 furlongs with him at a mile and a half is unknown until we do it. She’s a big this stage, so we’ll go for the G1 Prince of Wales's S. and powerful filly, she always was, but is very well [at Royal Ascot June 20] next and take it one step at a balanced. It’s all about balance.” Cont. p3 time. Next time will tell us what trip he needs, as we need to see how he switches off.” Cont. p8 JUST NINE FOR EPSOM’S DERBY With just a single-digit field set to go postward for tomorrow’s G1 Investec Derby at Epsom, the fewest since nine lined up for the 1907 renewal, the effect of yesterday’s draw takes on less significance than is usually the case. Highclere Thoroughbred Racing’s Pocahontas Syndicate colorbearer Bonfire (GB) (Manduro {Ger}), who will exit the eight hole, will become Andrew Balding’s first runner in the Blue Riband event, although the trainer has already bagged a Classic here, courtesy of Casual Look (Red Ransom) in the 2003 G1 Oaks. Last month’s G2 Dante S. victor will be partnered by Jimmy Fortune, who is confident the bay will handle the hullabaloo of the Derby preamble. “People have commented on Bonfire’s temperament, but he’s just a jack the lad, because he likes to do things his own way,” Fortune said. “No way does he worry or get upset. He is very genuine and is a very easy ride when he is going. I was very impressed with him in the Dante--he travelled very well and we got there far too early, but I was very impressed by the way he stuck his head out. He certainly won going away. I think he will stay, but he is not guaranteed to stay so we won’t know until the day.” Cont. p5 www.claibornefarm.com In This Issue CLOSE CALL FOR I’LL HAVE ANOTHER 60 Broad St., Suite 100 Red Bank, NJ 07701 I’ll Have Another (Flower Alley) narrowly avoided a (732) 747-8060 serious incident at Belmont Thursday morning when a (732) 747-8955 (fax) loose horse dumped her rider and ran off, coming www.thoroughbreddailynews.com within inches of the Triple Crown aspirant as he www.thetdn.com stretched his legs along the outer rail. Trainer Aidan O’Brien, who registered the last of his three successes with Alexandrova (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) in 2006, is six-handed in this quest for a fourth renewal. In addition to Maybe, he also saddles Kissed (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Twirl (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Betterbetterbetter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Devotion (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}), and Was (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Kissed, who is a 3/4-sister to last year’s G1 Derby hero Pour Moi (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), will run in the Derrick Smith colors only if the ground is deemed suitable. She stepped up from an eye-catching maiden score, which earned a J “TDN Rising Star” J tag, at Navan in October, and justified that accolade when making a hugely impressive seasonal return in April’s Listed Salsabil S. back at the Co. Meath track last time. Betterbetterbetter loomed large and looked likely to bag last month’s Listed Cheshire Oaks, but was collared late to finish second at the Roodeye circuit. O’Brien thinks a change of plan might benefit Roisin Henry and Susan Magnier’s bay here. “Betterbetterbetter ran a good race at Chester and [jockey] Joseph [O’Brien] said, if he was riding her again, he might delay her challenge.” Colm O’Donoghue steps in for the ride with that option. Twirl gave plenty, but was delivered a knockout blow by the smooth-travelling The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}) when runner-up in last month’s G3 Musidora S. at York. O’Brien has indicated she will relish stepping up to the mile-and-a-half trip. Wild Dayrell, Winner of the Epsom Derby, 1855 SOLD REF:- 137424 Artist: SAMUEL HENRY ALKEN Height: 77.47 cm (30 1/2") Width: 129.032 cm (50 3/4") 1 https://johnbennettfinepaintings.com/wild-dayrell-winner-of-the-epsom-derby-1855-1 02/10/2021 Short Description Wild Dayrell, Winner of the Epsom Derby, 1855 Henry Alken Jnr.’s Christian name was Samuel Henry Alken, but he is probably better known as the former. He was born on August 22nd, 1810, as the first son of Henry Alken, a major sporting painter of the 18th century and a member of this renowned dynasty of seven sporting artists. The Alkens were originally of Danish descent with Sefferein Snr coming to England in the late 1730’s and working as a stone and wood carver. Henry Alken Jnr was his great-grandson. He was batised at St Clement’s Church as Samuel Henry but his family always called him Henry Gordon but little is known of Alken’s personal life other than that he married Martha Dormer and is recorded as receiving parochial relief in 1891. When he died in 1894, he was residing in Polar Workhouse in southeast London. Alken’s work, in both oil and watercolour, is strikingly similar to that of his father. It is unclear whether the son was imitating his father, or whether he had simply been taught by him. Alken Jnr. is characterised as having a less developed sense of draughtsmanship but as paying closer attention to detail than his father. His horses are also less angular and more rounded than his father’s animals.
