CARLTON HOUSE RETURNS A WINNER , Derrick Smith and Susan Magnier’s Aside from (GB) ( {Ire}), Carlton House J “TDN Rising Star” J Maybe (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (Street Cry {Ire}) last summer’s major talking horse failed to fire on all cylinders when losing her unbeaten early in the season but, things had gone eerily quiet in last month’s G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket-- regarding The Queen’s colt following a lackluster fourth her first start since annexing in last June’s August’s G1 Moyglare Stud S. at G1 Irish . The Curragh--but she can follow Well-supported for the stable’s lead when lining up this seasonal for today’s G1 Investec Oaks at return, the . She was one of the main handsome sufferers when Gray Pearl (GB) 4-year-old came ( {GB})’s fatal injury from off the pace caused a significant delay to to land Thursday’s proceedings at Newmarket, but G3 Brigadier Maybe Racing Post/Cranham stablemate (GB) (Oasis Gerard S. at Dream {GB}) bounced back from Sandown. “We Carlton House Racing Post/Cranham his Rowley Mile reverse to garner last week’s G1 Irish were happy with 2000 Guineas, and confidence is high she can repeat his home work and had him as fit as we could without the dose stepped up a half mile for this comeback. “The taking any chances,” trainer Sir ground was a bit on the slow side, but we were very explained. “We were hopeful, as his home work had happy with her run in the [1000] Guineas,” commented been of good quality. There weren't any serious trainer Aidan O’Brien. “It was her first run of the year problems last year, but they were enough to prevent and perhaps she laboured a little bit through the race, him from running for the rest of the season.” As for but she was in the stalls a long time and lots of things what comes next for the bay, Stoute added, “We happened. Racing’s Pocahontas Syndicate colorbearer Bonfire (GB) (Manduro {Ger}), who will exit the eight hole, will become Andrew Balding’s first runner in the Blue Riband event, although the trainer has already bagged a Classic here, courtesy of () in the 2003 G1 Oaks. Last month’s G2 S. victor will be partnered by Jimmy Fortune, who is confident the bay will handle the hullabaloo of the Derby preamble. “People have commented on Bonfire’s temperament, but he’s just a jack the lad, because he likes to do things his own way,” Fortune said. “No way does he worry or get upset. He is very genuine and is a very easy ride when he is going. I was very impressed with him in the Dante--he travelled very well and we got there far too early, but I was very impressed by the way he stuck his head out. He certainly won going away. I think he will stay, but he is not guaranteed to stay so we won’t know until the day.” Cont. p5 www.claibornefarm.com In This Issue

O’Brien Flexes Six-Pack... Trainer Aidan O’Brien, who registered the last of his three successes with (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) in 2006, is six-handed in this quest for a fourth renewal. In addition to Maybe, he also saddles Kissed (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Twirl (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Betterbetterbetter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Devotion (Ire) ( {Ire}), and Was (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Kissed, who is a 3/4-sister to last year’s G1 Derby hero (Ire) ( {Ire}), will run in the Derrick Smith colors only if the ground is deemed suitable. She stepped up from an eye-catching maiden score, which earned a J “TDN Rising Star” J tag, at Navan in October, and justified that accolade when making a hugely impressive seasonal return in April’s Listed S. back at the Co. Meath track last time. Betterbetterbetter loomed large and looked likely to bag last month’s Listed Cheshire Oaks, but was collared late to finish second at the Roodeye circuit. O’Brien thinks a change of plan might benefit Roisin Henry and Susan Magnier’s bay here. “Betterbetterbetter ran a good race at Chester and [jockey] Joseph [O’Brien] said, if he was riding her , he might delay her challenge.” Colm O’Donoghue steps in for the ride with that option. Twirl gave plenty, but was delivered a knockout blow by the smooth-travelling The Fugue (GB) ( {GB}) when runner-up in last month’s G3 S. at York. O’Brien has indicated she will relish stepping up to the mile-and-a-half trip. Cont. p4

Oaks cont. The Fugue Bids for Musidora Repetition... Lady Lloyd-Webber’s The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}) was pitched in at the deep end following an October maiden score at Newmarket, and emerged with great credit by finishing fourth in the G1 1000 Guineas back at the Rowley Mile on seasonal debut. She flourished from there and toyed with Twirl in the G3 Musidora S. before unleashing a decisive kick, and continues on the right The Fugue Racing Post/Cranham path according to Buick. “I’m going into the race with a lot of confidence because The Fugue has every box ticked,” Buick blogged. “From the first time I sat on her I realised she had class, it was just a matter of how much. The 1000 Guineas was just her second run and she had a bad trip that day, getting struck into early on. It was a tribute to the Clarehaven team that she came back so well at York. The Guineas had brought her on, but the step up to 10 furlongs in the Musidora played to her strengths, and she quickened to win like a class filly. I wanted to make sure she had the easiest time possible and that the race would bring her further forward for the Oaks, and that’s certainly the case. I don’t have any serious concerns for the trip and there’s no reason to think she won’t stay the distance. She’s a very agile filly so she should handle the track as well as anything else in the field.”

Watering Policy Continues... With showers forecast in the area of Epsom in midweek, clerk of the course Andrew Cooper nonetheless maintained a low-key policy of minimal watering, and revealed the track’s official going remained as "good, good-to-firm in places" on the eve of Epsom’s first Classic. “We started watering on Tuesday of last week and have not been putting big volumes on, just keeping the ground at or near where it was,” explained Cooper. “The [forecast] rain never came Wednesday, though there were showers in the area, but we weren’t banking or depending on showers anyway. The forecast is mainly dry. In terms of watering, it is a question of fine tuning. We put three millimeters of water on the home straight Thursday afternoon. The ground remains good, good to firm in places. It is predominantly good ground, certainly from the Oaks start down to the beginning of the straight. It is quicker in places in the home straight and in some areas of the climb up the back. It's nice racing ground.”
