The National Board of Wildlife (NBWL) on Tuesday cleared a proposal to notify certain areas around the Okhla Bird Sanctuary in Noida as an ecosensitive zone (ESZ), ending the suspense over the status of thousands of ongoing construction projects that lie outside those areas. The decision will come as a major relief to thousands of residential and commercial construction projects in Noida, which had been impacted by an order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that had barred construction activity within a 10 km radius of the sanctuary till an ESZ was notified. The wildlife board, whose mandate is to promote and conserve wildlife, gave its nod to the draft notification issued by the environment ministry last year. The ministry had proposed an area comprising 100 mts from the eastern, western and southern boundaries of the sanctuary, and 1.27 km from the northern boundary, to be declared an eco- sensitive zone. When the setting up of ESZs in the country was originally proposed in 2002, it was suggested that all areas within a 10 km radius of a protected area should be declared eco-sensitive.

    FORKTAIL 19 (2003): 39-50 The birds of Okhla barrage bird sanctuary, Delhi, India ABDUL JAMIL URFI Okhla barrage bird sanctuary, on the river Yamuna in south Delhi, is an important site for breeding and wintering waterbirds, with 14,000–20,000 waterbirds recorded in winter. The dominant feature of the site is a large lake formed after the creation of a barrage on the river in 1986. Historical records, records resulting from fieldwork since 1989, and other recent records have been combined to produce a list of 302 species for the site and its immediate area. Species recorded since 1992 include three Vulnerable species (Baer’s Pochard Aythya baeri, Indian Skimmer Rynchops albicollis and Bristled Grassbird Chaetornis striatus) and six Near Threatened species (Ferruginous Pochard Aythya nyroca, Black-bellied Tern Sterna acuticauda, Darter Anhinga melanogaster, Black-headed Ibis Threskiornis melanocephalus, Painted Stork Mycteria leucocephala and Black-necked Stork Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus). The sanctuary is being encroached upon, and isolated by, surrounding development. INTRODUCTION The Okhla barrage bird sanctuary in Delhi is a haven for waterbirds (Singh 1983, Urfi 1993a, b, 1995). In 1990, an area of c.3.5 km2 on the river Yamuna in Delhi was notified as a bird sanctuary by the Uttar Pradesh government under the Wildlife Protection Act of India. The site is located at the point where the river leaves the territory of Delhi and enters the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh (Fig. 1). The most prominent feature of the sanctuary is the large lake created by damming the river, which lies sandwiched between Okhla village towards the west and Gautambudh Nagar towards the east.

A study was carried out in Lucknow District, Uttar Pradesh, India from July 2013- March 2014. Painted storks show only seasonal short distance movements in search of food and breeding grounds. They are the local migratory bird. Selection of the nest site is often considered as an important factor of reproductive success in many bird species. The aims of the study was to understand the factors affecting selection of nesting habi- tat and nest tree as well as time management during nest building so as to recommend management of the species for conservation. The role of nest site selection and nest building behavior has been poorly explored in this species. Painted stork prepares their nest in trees or areas that are near the water body. The nest trees selected were on Ashoka (Saraca longifolia). The main factor affecting the nest site selection was food availability. Both male and female participated in nest sanitation. The nest building materials consisted of fragments of old branches of trees, some soft green leaves (twigs of Eucalyptus) and grasses (Sacharum and Jussiaea). These branches helped in strengthening. The leaves and grasses helped in softening of the nest.
