No. 150705005 viii UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRACT Meme is one of the ways in communicating with others through social media; one of them is the Simpsons Meme. The Simpsons Meme is category of meme with picture and caption on it. By using visual semiotic analysis, this research aimed to identify the sign found in the Simpsons memes and how it is interpreted. The Simpsons memes as the data of the research is collected by using qualitative audio and visual materials from memes.com instagram as the source of the data. It is fourteen data analyzed by using visual semiotic with the theory proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce. This research use qualitative data analysis as the method of the study. Each data of this research consists of the sign and meaning. The signs identified based on Charles Sanders Peirce triadic sign (Representamen, Object and Interpretant) and there are three steps in interpreting the sign namely, non-verbal communication legisign, framing techniques and communicative act. Meme the Simpsons adalah kategori meme dengan gambar dan keterangan di dalamnya. Dengan menggunakan analisis semiotika visual, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi tanda yang terdapat dalam meme the Simpsons dan bagaimana tanda itu diinterpretasikan. Meme the Simpsons sebagai data penelitian diambil dengan menggunakan materi audio dan visual kualitatif dari instagram memes.com sebagai sumber data. Empat belas data dianalisis menggunakan semiotic visual dengan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Charles Sanders Peirce. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis kualitatif sebagai metode penelitian. Setiap data penelitian ini terdiri dari tanda dan arti. Tanda diidentifikasi berdasarkan triadic sign dari Charles Sanders Peirce (Representamen, Object and Interpretant) dan ada tiga langkah dalam menginterpretasikan tanda tersebut, yaitu non-verbal communication legisign, framing techniques and communicative act. Gilboy University of Hull 201108684 Abstract (Thesis Summary) The objective of this thesis is to establish meme theory as an analytical paradigm within the fields of screen and fan studies. Meme theory is an emerging framework founded upon the broad concept of a “meme”, a unit of culture that, if successful, proliferates among a given group of people. Created as a cultural analogue to genetics, memetics has developed into a cultural theory and, as the concept of memes is increasingly applied to online behaviours and activities, its relevance to the area of media studies materialises. The landscapes of media production and spectatorship are in constant fluctuation in response to rapid technological progress. The internet provides global citizens with unprecedented access to media texts (and their producers), information, and other individuals and collectives who share similar knowledge and interests. The unprecedented speed with (and extent to) which information and media content spread among individuals and communities warrants the consideration of a modern analytical paradigm that can accommodate and keep up with developments. Meme theory fills this gap as it is compatible with existing frameworks and offers researchers a new perspective on the factors driving the popularity and spread (or lack of popular engagement with) a given media text and its audience.

The essay’s specific aim is to transform carnivorous appetites by subverting the integrity of America’s national gastronomic emblem – the hamburger. The article examines how hamburgers are unsustainable food system commodities that exacerbate state-sanctioned climate change, analyzes the underpinnings of ecophobic beef literature—specifically the graphic narrative—that serves as state propaganda, and shows how American comics can alternately promote sustainability nexuses by creating awareness of how food systems impact climate change.
