  • Cookie Gilchrist
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 24, No. 2 (2000) The Pro Football Career Of Cookie Gilchrist By Brian Marshall Part I: From High School to the Senior ORFU It was the 1953 WPIAL (Western Pennsylvania Inter-scholastic Athletic League) Class AA Championship game and as a member of the Har-Brack Tigers "Triple Terror Backfield" it was a given that Carlton Chester "Cookie" Gilchrist would have a big day against the Donora Dragons. The individual numbers didn't materialize for Cookie, who was held to only 2 yards rushing, on that late November day at Pitt Stadium and as a matter of fact the game ended in a scoreless tie. Nevertheless, the 1953 season was a good one for Cookie as he led the WPIAL in scoring with 186 points, in 9 regular season games, and had a huge day rushing, 294 yards on 15 carries and 5 touchdowns, in a game against Vandergrif on October 30. The game was chosen, in 1994, the top game in Alle-Kiski Valley history. Cookie also received the most votes in the balloting for the All-Pennsylvania Team. Cookie turned 19 years of age in 1954 and was ineligible to compete at the WPIAL level so he took his 6'1", 215 lb frame and headed for the big time, the Cleveland Browns of the NFL. In order to become a member of the Browns, a special ruling was required from then NFL Commissioner Bert Bell. Cleveland's coaching genius, Paul Brown, welcomed the many newcomers, 36 to be exact, to the Browns' training camp at Hiram College on Sunday July 25th.

  • •2011 CJFL Record Book Special:2007 Record Book
…Introduction This edition of our Record Book includes some new material and recent research. First, we had an opportunity to obtain the original game sheets from former PJFC Chief Statistician Darly Slade. These sheets are from 1976 to 1982 and provide us with a hugh catalogue of lost information. Included in the Prairie papers were copies of weekly stats releases from the BC, Manitoba and Ontario Conferences. In particular there was a 1978 letter from former OFC Chief Statistician Lloyd Norton regarding the suspension of the Etobicoke-Lakeshore Bears by President Paul Teolis. In researching this matter we also found that Scarboro Rams ceased operations for the season some 10 days later and that both teams were missing in previous OFC final standings. This has been updated. Also, we have learned from Paul Shortt that the 1978 BC league had similar issues in 1978. North Shore Cougars failed to field a team and Vancouver Blue Bombers folded after just two games. More detailed information can be found in the 1978 Milestone section. Secondly, more newspaper articles became available for the Eastern teams of 1904 to 1913, the Manitoba juniors of 1912 & 1913, the Western Groups of the 1927 Jr ORFU, as well as the 1949 and 1970 Jr ORFU. These team standings have been update. New research information on the actual organization structure of both the ORFU and the QRFU have required us to refer to them as the Junior ORFU or QRFU per say rather than the ORFU- QRFU Juniors. The Eastern team standings are updated on this change.

  • Willie Fleming's Spectacular 1963 Season in The
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 14, No. 6 (1992) 9.7 Copyright © 1992 Robert Sproule All Right Reserved In 1954 Canadian Football League rookie running back Jackie Parker (from Mississippi State) set the record for the highest rushing average in a season. On a minimum of 100 carries, O’ Jackie ran the ball 117 times for 925 yards for and unheard average of 7.9 yards per carry, and that put Mr. Parker in third place in the rushing derby that year and only 118 yards behind Howie Waugh of Calgary who set a record as the first 1,000 yard rusher with 1043 yards. Six year later in 1960, the Great Leo Lewis with Winnipeg Blue Bombers, rushed 106 times for 923 yards for an record average of 8.7 yards per carry. But this story is not about Parker or Waugh but rather the runner who finished fourth in rushing, even ahead of Leo Lewis that year. Willie “the Wisp” Fleming of the BC Lions and his spectacular 1963 season. He wasn’t a big back by today’s standards, or even by the standards of his day. At 5 foot 9 inches tall and 175 pounds, Willie Fleming from Iowa University was considered a lightweight but he did have one advantage in playing halfback with the BC Lions. He was the blood relative of the Roman God Mercury and his great speed would be his fame. That year, 1960, Willie became the first BC runner to go over the 1,000 yard barrier with 1,051 yards and an average of 8.4 yards per carry.
