“Allah! Wehdat! Wehdat! Al-Quds Arabiya!”: Football, Nationalism and the Chants of Palestinian Resistance in Jordan Examining Committee: Chair: Mary-Ellen Kelm Associate Professor Paul Sedra Senior Supervisor Associate Professor Thomas Kuehn Supervisor Associate Professor Derryl MacLean Supervisor Associate Professor Adel Iskandar External Examiner Assistant Professor School of Communication Simon Fraser University Date Defended/Approved: November 27, 2015 ii Ethics Statement iii Abstract After the Jordanian Civil War in 1970—which saw the Jordanian army defeat Palestinian guerrillas, the death of thousands of Palestinians living in Jordan and the exile of Palestinian political organizations and leaders from refugee camps—Palestinians in Jordan became politically and socially marginalized. Despite these marginalizations, Palestinians in Jordan always had access to sport. This thesis will examine how the football club, al-Wehdat, plays a role in creating and establishing identity and nationalism for Palestinians in Jordan. By using oral history, I move beyond the narrative of a homogenous Palestinian identity and demonstrate the complexities of Palestinian identities. Moreover, utilizing oral history in my thesis challenges the notion of football being cathartic, and demonstrates how al-Wehdat fans are able to: A) manoeuvre within the stadium, despite being under constant surveillance, B) to continue to use al-Wehdat as a political platform, predominantly through their chants, and C) to develop Palestinian identity and nationalism in Jordan.

Pandit Ravi Shankar—Tansen of our Times Pandit Ravi Shankar died a few months ago, just short of his 93rd birthday on 7 April. So it is opportune that we remember a man whom I have rather unabashedly called the Tansen of our times. Pandit Ravi Shankar was easily the greatest musician of our times and his death marks not only the transience of time itself, but it also reminds us of the glory that was his life and the immortality of his legacy. In the passing of Robindro Shaunkar Chowdhury, as he was called by his parents, on 11 December in San Diego, California, we cherish the memory of an extraordinary genius whose life and talent spanned almost the whole of the 20th century. It crossed all continents, it connected several genres of human endeavour, it uplifted countless hearts, minds and souls. Very few Indians epitomized Indian culture in the global imagination as this charismatic Bengali Brahmin, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Born in 1920, Ravi Shankar not only straddled two centuries but also impacted many worlds—the East, the West, the North and the South, the old and the new, the traditional and the modern.

The Chitrolekha Journal on Art and Design (E-ISSN 2456-978X), Vol. 2, No.1, 2018 DOI: https://dx.doi.org/10.21659/cjad.21.v2n104 PDF URL: www.chitrolekha.com/ns/v2n1/v2n104.pdf Institutions of Change: Kathak dance from Courts to Classrooms Suman Bhagchandani Ph.D. scholar of English at Jamia Milia University, Delhi. Orcid: 0000-0001-9525-2697. Email: [email protected] Abstract: This paper is a study of the progress of Kathak from the erstwhile courtesan culture to the contemporary classroom, structured practice. It aims to highlight the works of contributors like Nirmala Joshi and Sumitra Charat Ram as the pioneers of institutional Kathak that completely divorced its cultural past in the Mughal courts. Amidst all this cleansisng of Kathak history, Madame Menaka, one of the first female Kathak dancers to perform on the proscenium stage and to legitimise her presence by her association with insitutions of Kathak stands out. Madame Menaka truly deserves more attention in dance history and this paper aims to celebrate her life and works in Kathak. These artists and art entrepreneurs have never come together on the same platform for their contributions in the field of art and culture as they do in this paper. Their works lie scattered in biographies and articles that perform a discrete study on each of them. This paper is therefore an attempt to draw a linear development of Kathak through the works of female art contributors. Keywords: Kathak, Madame Menaka, Mughal courts, courtesan culture Introduction Kathak recognised by the Sangeet Natak Akademy as one of the eight classical dances of India is known for its precision in foot-work, fast pirrouttes, fine expressions, and its story-telling tradtion.

FOUND IN TRANSLATION FOUND IN TRANSLATIONPHOTOGRAPHED BY MANISH SAMPAT Could it be that the hopes of Indian football rest on the shoulders of its foreign players? Vivek Menezes investigates N A FREEZING March morning in the Fergana Valley in eastern Uzbekistan, the champion team of Neftchi Football Club boarded a plane to Tashkent, then connected on another long flight to New Delhi, Ofollowed by a final hop to Goa. Less than 24 hours after arriving into the Indian heat, coach Yuri Sarkisyan led his players on to the floodlit pitch at Fatorda Stadium outside Margao, to play against Salgaocar Sports Club in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup. One of the storied teams of Indian football, Salgaocar had recently achieved impressive results under the guid- ance of its excitable Moroccan coach, Karim Bencherifa. Last year, they won the national I-League. But the AFC Cup presented another level of competition, against proven winners from 14 different countries: an Indian team had yet to win a single match in the Cup. As the teams warmed up, I observed an unmistakable air of res- ignation amid the crowd. The Goan fans clearly expected a drubbing. The early minutes of the game did nothing to change that expectation: thick-legged Uzbek defenders walled off their territory, and the deft Neftchi mid-field dominated possession easily. In the 25th minute, Atabek Isroilov headed home the game’s first goal, and triumphant Rus- sian cheers rang through the night air. But standing at the sidelines, I noticed the Indian team exchanging purpose- ful nods. Later, after the game, Salgaocar’s attacking mid- fielder Ryuji Sueoka would tell me that it was a moment of mutual understanding.
