In this regard, the paper analyzes the concepts on territory, borders and bound in the Turks` society, the indicator of the boundaries for Turkic tribes and the way of expression the world concept on nature and human being of above stated nations. The research findings show that Turks as their descendants Kazakhs had a distinctive vision on environment and the relationship between human being and nature. Human being and nature were conceived as a single organism. Relationship of Turkic mythic outlook with real historical tradition and a particular geographical location captures the scale of the era of the birth of new cultural schemes. It was reflected in the various historical monuments, which characterizes the Turkic civilization as a complex system. -

Sergo Ratiani Differing Political Theologies of Differing Eras Terms and Problem Specification Carl Schmitt introduced the term ‘political theology’ into modern po- litical science. In his opinion, ‘all significant concepts of the [modern] science of politics are secularized theological concepts’.1 Political theology describes a method that makes it possible to detect traces of theology in modern po- litical discourse. The concept of political theology has become a subject of investigation for many scientists. For example, Armin Adam in his work ‘A History of Po- litical Theology’ talks of the broadening usage of this term.2 We are interested in that aspect of political theology that deals with Church-State relations and the theological foundations of the ideological side of these relations. This subject interests us from many angles: Firstly, the Church is a societal community and, from a certain perspec- tive, itself comprises a ‘polis’ that is based on theology. Secondly, there is the issue of relations between the ‘Kingdom of God’ and an earthly power, which comprises relations between a spiritual author- ity and a secular power. Thirdly, how the Church provides the functioning of certain political systems with a theological discourse. Fourthly, how the Church paves the way for its policy by elaborating a theological discourse. Fifthly, the problem of the extent to which one political system or an- other exerts influence on the Church’s theological discourse. We shall discuss this topic using the example of the Georgian Ortho- dox Church. We shall see what political theology it elaborated in differing eras and towards differing political systems. -

Resulting from his modernization and secularization process, there were several consequences upon Turkish nations in particular that related to social and religious as well as political aspects. This paper discusses some of those consequences in the contexts of modern Turkey. Using a secondary data analysis, published materials written by scholars and writers in the field, the study found that Kemal’s reforms had totally brought a new system of life based on the western style whilst rejecting Islamic tradition and its culture. This includes his policy to terminate the political role of Islam or taking Islam out of politics. Kemal’s modernization could be regarded as one of the main factors for the social and religious changes in modern Turkey. -

DOI: 10.7816/idil-04-16-08 idil, 2015, Cilt 4, Sayı 16, Volume 4, Issue 16 NOVUS ORTUS: THE AWAKENING OF LAZ LANGUAGE IN TURKEY Nurdan KAVAKLI 1 ABSTRACT Laz (South Caucasian) language, which is spoken primarily on the southeastern coast of the Black Sea in Turkey, is being threatened by language endangerment. Having no official status, Laz language is considered to be an ethnic minority language in Turkey. All Laz people residing in Turkey are bilingual with the official language in the country, Turkish, and use Laz most frequently in interfamilial conversations. In this article, Laz language is removed from the dusty pages of Turkish history as a response to the threat of language attrition in the world. Accordingly, language endangerment is viewed in terms of a sociolinguistic phenomenon within the boundaries of both language-internal and -external factors. Laz language revitalization acts have also been scrutinized. Having a dekko at the history of modern Turkey will enlighten whether those revitalization acts and/or movements can offer a novus ortus (new birth) for the current situation of Laz language. TREBIZOND AND NORTH-EASTERN TURKEY BY DENIS A. H. WRIGHT A lecture delivered to the Royal Central Asian Society on Wednesday, October 24, 1945. In the Chair, Admiral Sir Howard Kelly, G.B.E., K.C.B., C.M.G., M.V.O. The CHAIRMAN, in introducing the lecturer, said: Mr. Denis Wright is going to speak to us about the port of Trebizond, whose poetical- sounding name suggests the starting-point of the " Golden Road to Samarkand." I had the pleasure of serving with Mr. Wright in Turkey. From September, 1939, to February, 1941, he was British Vice-Consul at Constanta. After the rupture of diplomatic relations with Rumania he went to take charge of the British Consulate at Trebizond. There, for almost two years, he and his wife were the only two English people; for part of that time he was the only British representative on the Black Sea. From May, 1943, until January of 1945 Mr. Wright was our Consul at Mersin. Although he and I had no direct dealings with each other, I know he was one of the most co-operative of all the British officials in Turkey, and that he did everything he possibly could to help the Services. WHEN in February, 1941, I passed through Ankara on my first visit to Trebizond I was told three things about the place: firstly, that it was the centre of a very large hazelnut-producing area, probably the largest in the world; secondly, that my British community there would be a very small one; and, thirdly, that Trebizond had for many hundreds of years been the transit port of a most important trade to and from Persia, that that trade still flourished, and that I should see camels arriving daily from Persia loaded with all the exotic merchandise of the East. -

S’adresser aux consommateurs selon leurs besoins et demandes, et spécialement dans des pays à diversité culturelle, permet d’atteindre les buts du marketing. De ce point de vue, il est important de prendre en compte les différentes identités culturelles de la population. Chaque groupe ethnique possède sa propre langue, sa croyance, ses valeurs etc. Par contre leur représentation dans l’industrie médiatique peut différer de ce qu’il en est réellement. La Turquie est un pays multiculturel. Divers groupes ethniques y vivent. Par exemple les Kurdes, les Lazes, les Circassiens, les Caucasiens, les Arméniens, les Rums/Grecs, les Alévis, les Yazidis etc. Toutes ces identités ethniques représentent une importante valeur pour la Turquie. Ma recherche porte ainsi sur la représentation des identités ethniques dans les publicités turques. Ma question principale est donc celle-ci: “Comment ces identités sont-elles reflétées dans les pratiques publicitaires”. Les concepts d’identité ethnique, de marketing ethnique et de publicité ethnique y seront tout d’abord expliqués et débattus selon la littérature concernée, puis j’entreprendrais une analyse de contenu sur des exemples de publicité, pour finalement tenter d’expliquer pourquoi l’identité ethnique est importante pour les marques et la publicité en Turquie et dans le monde. -

16. The Georgian–Abkhazian conflict Alexander Krylov I. Introduction The Abkhaz have long populated the western Caucasus. They currently number about 100 000 people, speak one of the languages of the Abkhazo-Adygeyan (west Caucasian) language group, and live in the coastal areas on the southern slopes of the Caucasian ridge and along the Black Sea coast. Together with closely related peoples of the western Caucasus (for example, the Abazins, Adygeyans and Kabardians (or Circassians)) they play an important role in the Caucasian ethno-cultural community and consider themselves an integral part of its future. At the same time, the people living in coastal areas on the southern slopes of the Caucasian ridge have achieved broader communication with Asia Minor and the Mediterranean civilizations than any other people of the Caucasus. The geographical position of Abkhazia on the Black Sea coast has made its people a major factor in the historical process of the western Caucasus, acting as an economic and cultural bridge with the outside world. Georgians and Abkhaz have been neighbours from time immemorial. The Georgians currently number about 4 million people. The process of national consolidation of the Georgian nation is still far from complete: it includes some 20 subgroups, and the Megrelians (sometimes called Mingrelians) and Svans who live in western Georgia are so different in language and culture from other Georgians that it would be more correct to consider them as separate peoples. Some scholars, Hewitt, for example,1 suggest calling the Georgian nation not ‘Georgians’ but by their own name, Kartvelians, which includes the Georgians, Megrelians and Svans.2 To call all the different Kartvelian groups ‘Georgians’ obscures the true ethnic situation. -

The scope is then gradually widened. First, it is shown how more historically oriented research can provide insight into the social organization of the region in question, and in particular, into the nature of ethnic identity. Contrary to some common assumptions, ethnicity seems to have been de- emphasized in the later Ottoman period, when the people of this periphery were already well integrated into the state system. Second, again drawing on recent publications by other scholars, the paper reviews the question of ethnicity in Anatolia generally. The Turkish republic has often been criticized for its failure to recognize ethnic groups, and is likely to come under increasing pressure to recognize the rights of ‘cultural minorities’, e.g. in negotiations over EU entry. Within anthropology, however, there is no consensus as to how recognition of group diversity should be translated into political practice. Key terms such as ‘culture’ and ‘ethnicity’ have become unstable. According to Barth’s influential discussion (1969), ethnicity classifies a person ‘in terms of his basic, most general identity’. -

IntRODUctION THE OSSETIAN EpIC “TALES OF THE NARTS” VASILY IvANOVICH ABAEV 1 w CYCLES, SubjECTS, HEROES In literary studies it is established that the epic poem passes through sev- eral stages in its formation. To begin we have an incomplete collection of stories with no connections between them, arising in various centers, at various times, for various reasons. That is the first stage in the formation of the epic. We cannot as yet name it such. But material is in the process of preparation that, given favorable conditions, begins to take on the out- lines of an epic poem. From the mass of heroes and subjects a few favorite names, events, and motifs stand out, and stories begin to crystallize around them, as centers of gravity. A few epic centers or cycles are formed. The epic enters the second stage of cycle formation. In a few instances, not all by any means, it may then attain a third stage. Cycles up to now unconnected may be, more or less artificially, united in one thematic thread, and are brought together in one consistent story, forming one epic poem. A hyper- cyclic formation, if one can use such a term, takes place. It may appear as the result of not only uniting several cycles, but as the expansion of one favorite cycle, at the expense of others less popular. This is the concluding epic phase. The transformation to this phase is frequently the result of individual creative efforts.
