A walk from the Waldron Health Centre, Stanley Street, , SE8 4BG

Residential Lewisham

Description: Discover hidden public gardens on this route that takes you away from the humdrum traffic of Road and Lewisham Way.

Distance: 2 miles Duration: 50 mins (35 mins if short cut taken) Paces: 4000 paces

1. Turn left up Amersham Vale and then right at the T-junction at New Cross Road. Just beyond the rail bridge at the staggered crossings, cross to Amersham Road. Continue on across Lewisham Way into Shardloes Road. (650 paces)

2. Turn left through bollards at Vulcan Road and then left into Upper Road. Bear left into Rockeby Road and continue past Myat Garden Primary School (SE4 1DF) to Lewisham Way. (1950 paces)

Shallow steps and a long alleyway offer an alternative route via Luxmore Gardens. There is an entrance beside Number 1 Rockeby Road that is more attractive than the one first signposted, as you enter Rockeby Road from Upper Brockley Road, however it has shallow steps. There is an accessible entrance to the gardens but it means a detour from this route via Malpas Road.

3. At the corner with Lewisham Way there is the Art House Gallery, housed in an old Carnegie Library Building (SE14 6PD). Turn right here and cross at the crossing and then turn left into Oscar Street and enter Friendly Gardens. (2350 paces)

Friendly Gardens has a mix of play equipment and there are places to sit.

4. Bear right through the gardens and exit on Friendly Street. Turn left (signposted to Brookmill Park and the DLR) and cross the railway – you catch a glimpse of St John’s station to your right – and at Albyn Road, you can make a choice of a quick route back to the Waldron Health Centre or continue on down to Brookmill Road.

For the short cut back to Waldron, turn left down Albyn Road, and then bear right down Tanners Hill, crossing Broadway at the crossing. Turn left along New Cross Road to Amersham Vale and the Waldron.

5. Cross Brookmill Road. (If you turn right here, a few paces along you will come to the Stephen Lawrence Centre (SE8 4HU)). Walk straight ahead across the park and the bridge over the Ravensbourne river, to turn left towards Deptford Bridge DLR. (2970 paces)

These paths are shared with cyclists. The construction of the DLR enabled this traffic free route to be created.

6. Turn left on Deptford Broadway (4000 paces) and pass beneath a “Welcome to Lewisham” sign. Continue straight across Tanners Hill, passing in front of the Deptford Surgery (SE14 6TJ) - look out for the “Deptford Marbles”, an intriguing wall mural. Cross at the crossing in front of Addey & Stanhope School, and continue up New Cross Road, to Amersham Vale and the Waldron.
