MIMI STILLMAN, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR 2017 2018 “ONE OF THE MOST DYNAMIC GROUPS IN THE US!” SEA—The Huffington SON Post DOLCE SUONO ENSEMBLE has been enriching and informing people’s lives through chamber music since its founding by flutist and Artistic Director Mimi Stillman in 2005. Hailed as an “adventurous ensemble” (The New York Times) and “One of the most dynamic groups in the US!” (The Huffington Post), the ensemble performs critically acclaimed chamber music concerts at home and on tour, commissions new works, makes recordings, and engages in community engagement partnerships. Dolce Suono Trio, its high-profile trio of flute, cello, and piano, evolved organically from the longstanding collaboration of flutist Mimi Stillman and pianist Charles Abramovic joined by cellist Nathan Vickery (Gabriel Cabezas) to explore and expand the repertoire of this captivating combination. “The three were flawlessly in sync – even their trills!” (The Philadelphia Inquirer) Dolce Suono Ensemble presents innovative programs of Baroque to new music. Historian Mimi Stillman’s curatorial vision sets the music in its broadest cultural context. Some of its artistically and intellectually powerful projects include the celebrated Mahler 100/ Schoenberg 60, Debussy in Our Midst: A Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Claude Debussy, A Place and a Name: Remembering the Holocaust, Women Pioneers of American Music, and Música en tus Manos (Music in Your Hands), our engagement initiative with the Latino community. A Global Sampling of Piano Music from 1978 to 2005: a Recording Project
ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: A GLOBAL SAMPLING OF PIANO MUSIC FROM 1978 TO 2005 Annalee Whitehead, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2011 Dissertation directed by: Professor Bradford Gowen Piano Division, School of Music Pianists of the twenty-first century have a wealth of repertoire at their fingertips. They busily study music from the different periods Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and some of the twentieth century trying to understand the culture and performance practice of the time and the stylistic traits of each composer so they can communicate their music effectively. Unfortunately, this leaves little time to notice the composers who are writing music today. Whether this neglect proceeds from lack of time or lack of curiosity, I feel we should be connected to music that was written in our own lifetime, when we already understand the culture and have knowledge of the different styles that preceded us. Therefore, in an attempt to promote today’s composers, I have selected piano music written during my lifetime, to show that contemporary music is effective and worthwhile and deserves as much attention as the music that preceded it. This dissertation showcases piano music composed from 1978 to 2005. A point of departure in selecting the pieces for this recording project is to represent the major genres in the piano repertoire in order to show a variety of styles, moods, lengths, and difficulties. Therefore, from these recordings, there is enough variety to successfully program a complete contemporary recital from the selected works, and there is enough variety to meet the demands of pianists with different skill levels and recital programming needs. -

A Design Thinking Approach To Leadership Development Abstract This thesis argues that a systems and design thinking approach to education can have a transformational affect on individuals and organizations. This thesis looks at the Curtis Institute of Music and how the school is challenging students to expand their thinking by involving a diverse group of stakeholders in the complete redesign of performance experience. A description of an interactive planning and idealized design project, called the Curtis Leadership Workshop, is presented. This thesis specifically provides an overview of the theory, model and applied methodology, and an account of the preparation for and first critical steps of the project. Outcomes of critical steps are presented and a number of research questions for a formal impact analysis are proposed. Each of the pieces by Jennifer Higdon, Shulamit Ran, Andrea Clearfield, and Zhou Tian is a remarkable work of chamber music and an important contribution to the repertoire for flute, cello, and piano. The earliest major works for this trio combination are by Haydn (1790), not surprising as he was an initiator of other genres such as the string quartet and the symphony. -

The season opens with DSE Goes to the Opera on Sepember 25, 2016 , a program devoted to opera arias and fantasies as well as vocal chamber music by composers including Mozart, Bellini, Delibes, Bizet, and Floyd, including DSE’s own arrangements created for this concert and arrangements made for the ensemble by composer Steven Stucky. DSE favorite Sarah Shafer , soprano, joins our core artists Mimi Stillman , flute, Nathan Vickery , cello, and Charles Abramovic , piano. We continue the season on December 11, 2016 with The Americas Project / Música en tus Manos , DSE’s highly praised exploration of the chamber music of the U.S. and Latin America, coupled with engagement initiatives in the Latino community of Philadelphia. This project features the world premiere of a new trio for flute, cello, and piano by Michael-Thomas Foumai , supported by a grant from the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University. Foumai, a young composer garnering impressive commissions and awards, was a winner of DSE’s first Young Composers Competition in 2013.
