Tianwen-1: China's Mars Mission drishtiias.com/printpdf/tianwen-1-china-s-mars-mission Why In News China will launch its first Mars Mission - Tianwen-1- in July, 2020. China's previous ‘Yinghuo-1’ Mars mission, which was supported by a Russian spacecraft, had failed after it did not leave the earth's orbit and disintegrated over the Pacific Ocean in 2012. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is also going to launch its own Mars mission in July, the Perseverance which aims to collect Martian samples. Key Points The Tianwen-1 Mission: It will lift off on a Long March 5 rocket, from the Wenchang launch centre. It will carry 13 payloads (seven orbiters and six rovers) that will explore the planet. It is an all-in-one orbiter, lander and rover system. Orbiter: It is a spacecraft designed to orbit a celestial body (astronomical body) without landing on its surface. Lander: It is a strong, lightweight spacecraft structure, consisting of a base and three sides "petals" in the shape of a tetrahedron (pyramid- shaped). It is a protective "shell" that houses the rover and protects it, along with the airbags, from the forces of impact. Rover: It is a planetary surface exploration device designed to move across the solid surface on a planet or other planetary mass celestial bodies. 1/3 Objectives: The mission will be the first to place a ground-penetrating radar on the Martian surface, which will be able to study local geology, as well as rock, ice, and dirt distribution. It will search the martian surface for water, investigate soil characteristics, and study the atmosphere. -

European Astronaut Selection ESA prepares for the missions of the 21 st century With the selection of its first astronauts ESA’s human spaceflight activities in 1978 and the first Spacelab mission are now entering a new era, with ESA in 1983, the European Space Agency astronauts working aboard the (ESA) took its first steps into human International Space Station (ISS), spaceflight. Gente comune, ‘’scienziati’’ del progetto Einstein@Home, scoprono una nuova pulsar nei dati del radio telescopio di Arecibo. I computer inattivi sono un po’ come il parco giochi degli astronomi: tre persone comuni, un tedesco ed una coppia in America, hanno scoperto una pulsar nascosta nei dati raccolti dall’osservatorio di Arecibo. Questa e’ la prima scoperta dello spazio profondo da parte di Einstein@Home, un progetto che utilizza il tempo di calcolo donato da 250 000 volontari in 192 differenti paesi. I volontari mettono a disposizione i propri computer quando non li stanno usando (Science Express, Aug. 12, 2010.). I volontari i cui computer hanno fatto la scoperta sono Chris ed Helen Colvin, di Ames, nell’Iowa, USA, e Daniel Gebhardt dell’universita’ di Mainz , dipartimento di informatica musicale, Germania. I loro computer, assieme agli altri 500 000 sparsi in tutto il mondo, analizzano dati per Einstein@Home (in media ogni volontario contribuisce con due computer). La nuova pulsar, chiamata PSR J2007+2722, e’ una stella di neutroni che ruota su se’ stessa 41 volte al secondo. La pulsar si trova nella Via Lattea nella costellazione Vulpecula a circa 17 000 anni luce dalla Terra. A differenza delle altre pulsar che ruotano velocemente e stabilmente come lei, J2007+2722 se ne sta tutta sola nello spazio senza nessun’altra stella compagna ad orbitarle attorno. Gli astronomi ritengono che J2007+2722 sia particolarmente interessante perche’ e’ probabilmente una pulsar riciclata che ha perso durante la propria evoluzione la stella compagna. Questa ipotesi, seppure la piu’ interessante, rimane tuttavia una ipotesi e altri scenari sono possibili, per esempio che J2007+2722 sia una pulsar giovane nata con un campo magnetico piu’ basso del normale. -

Global Urban Observation and Information, 2020-2022 Implementation Plan 1. Executive Summary • Full title of the Initiative: Global Urban Observation and Information, 2020-2022 • Short title or acronym: GUOI 2020 • Existing or proposed category: GEO Initiative • Overview: GUOI 2020 intends to improve urban monitoring and assessment by developing a series of satellite based essential urban variables and indicators of sustainable cities through international cooperation and collaboration, to provide datasets, information, technologies to pertinent urban users in World Bank, UN, Africa, South America, and planning and environmental management agencies in other developing countries, and to support UN SDG Goal 11: Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. The pertinent government agencies that would most likely use our datasets include city authorities and resilient offices, departments of urban and regional planning, environmental management, natural resources, metropolitan transit authority, and office of sustainability, and regional statistics. These agencies need to use the datasets to obtain information about urban land use/land cover, urban form and growth patterns, infrastructure and transport needs, ecosystems and biodiversity, human health, thermal comfort, food security, and socioeconomic development. Further, the World Bank Platform for Urban Mapping and Analysis can be greatly benefited from the datasets, products, and services that this project offers. For scientific community, GUOI 2020 will provide new knowledge on global urbanization process and innovations on urban observation. While some activities are extensions of the GEO SB-04 and GI-17 activities, others are proposed anew. These activities of different organizations and countries are coalesced as one single GEO initiative through collaborative and affiliated projects, annual symposia, international summer school, joint field works, publications, and coordinated user engagement efforts.
