In turn, oxygenated conditions are identified by an amalgamation of growth increments and the precipitation of silica and silicates. In the final study, a partial response of lake com- munities to the proposed abiotic changes in the pal- aeoenvironment between phases 2 and 3 has been demonstrated. The studied section of Lake Sihetun yields three arthropod-dominated associations as well as two assemblages. Response curves to envi- ronmental gradients indicate that components of associations 1 and 2 (Eosestheria middendorfii and mayfly larvae) were generalists, explaining their presence in both phases 2 and 3. Most paleotempestological studies have been conducted using “established proxies”, such as grain-size analysis, loss-on-ignition, and micropaleontological indicators. More recently researchers have been applying more advanced geochemical analyses, such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanning and stable isotopic geochemistry to generate new paleotempestological records. This is presented as a four article-type thesis that investigates how changing climate conditions have impacted the frequency and paths of tropical cyclones in the western North Atlantic basin on different spatial and temporal scales. The first article (Chapter 2; Oliva et al., 2017, Prog Phys Geog) provides an in-depth and up-to- date literature review of the current state of paleotempestological studies in the western North Atlantic basin. The assumptions, strengths and limitations of paleotempestological studies are discussed. Moreover, this article discusses innovative venues for paleotempestological research that will lead to a better understanding of TC dynamics under future climate change scenarios.

Limnol., 60 : 585-606, 1999 A New Spinicaudatan (Crustacea: Branchiopoda) from the Island of Olkhon (Lake Baikal, Russia) and the Zoogeography of East Asian Spinicaudata Hidetoshi NAGANAWA ABSTRACT A spinicaudatan branchiopod crustacean, Baikalolkhonia tatianae gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Baikal region in Russia. The genus is assigned to the family Cyzicidae STEBBING,1910, based on the absence of a frontal organ on the head, the absence of triangular epipodal laminae on the thoracopods, and the presence of a pair of large frontal spines on the telson. The main distinguishing characteris- tic is that the epipodal upper corners of many anterior thoracopods (including even the first pair) are transformed into "sausage-like organs." Since such epipodal processes have been until now unknown in the Cyzicidae, the diagnosis of the family is emended, and 2 newly defined subfamilies, Baikalolkhoniinae and Cyzicinae, are proposed. Up to the present, 11 species belonging to 7 genera in 4 families of Spinicaudata (Cyclestheriidae, Cyzicidae, Leptestheriidae, and Lim- nadiidae) are known from the neighboring regions of East Asia, includ- ing the Russian Far East, Mongolia, China, Korea, and Japan. The list of species and the key to the species are provided. Their distribution defines 4 zoogeographical provinces, and the species diversity clearly shows a latitudinal gradient in a similar pattern to the European fauna. Since the glaciers left over 11,000 years ago most lakes have accumulated between 10 and 80 ft of sediment in their deep basins. Sediments preserve a record of physical, chemical, and biological clues of how, when, and why a lake and its watershed have changed. Sediment coring ü Scientists (called paleolimnologists) work from an anchored boat or from the surface of the ice and use specialized equipment designed for recovering sediment cores. For example, a piston corer uses a clear tube that is lowered to the lake bottom using 10 ft-long alloy rods that thread together. The tube is fitted with a piston that is held in place with a cable; as the tube is pushed into the mud, the piston helps “pull” the sediment into the tube. Sediment core analyses – we test and measure physical, chemical, and biological clues that are preserved in the sediment ü Radioisotopes – To establish a date-depth relationship for a core, we use natural (Lead-210) or man-made (Cesium-137; from atomic bombs) radioisotopes. Where Burmese amber is mined in hazardous conditions, smuggled out of the country, and sold as gemstones, the most disheartening issue is that the recent surge of exciting scientific discoveries, particularly involving vertebrate fossils, has in part fueled the commercial trading of amber.

    The Viruan (Middle Ordovician) of Öland By Valdar Jaanusson ABSTRACT.-The stratigraphy and lithology of the Viruan (Middle Ordovician) Iimestones of the bed-rock of Öland are described based on three bares and on field work in the outcrop area. A combined litho- and bio-stratigraphic classification (termed topo-stratigraphic) is introduced for the described sequence. The names of the Estonian stages (Aserian, Lasnamägian, Uhakuan, and Kukrusean) are used as chrono-stratigraphic references instead of the previous Swedish names of the units of stage category (Platyurus, Schroeteri, Crassicauda, and Ludibundus, re­ spectivcly). New topo-stratigraphic divisions are Segerstad Limestone (of Aserian age), Skärlöv, Seby, and Folkeslunda Limestones (of Lasnamägian age), Furudal, Källa, and Persnäs Lime­ stones (of Uhakuan age), and Dalby Limestone (of Kukrusean age in the bed-rock of Öland). The Aserian Lasnamägian topo-stratigraphic divisions have the same lithological characteris­ and tics throughout Öland. The Uhakuan beds are developed as calcilutites (Furudal Limestone) on southern Öland continuing as a tongue (Källa Limestone) on northern Öland. The middle and upper part of the Uhakuan beds of northern Öland consist of calcarenites (Persnäs Limestone) lithologically indistiguishable from the Kukrusean Dalby Limestone which forms the bed-rock only on northern Öland. Within the Segerstad Limestone two zones are distinguished (z. of Angelinoceras latum and z. of Illaenus planifrons).H ouvr ' s zones of Lituites discors, L. lituus, and L. perfectus are of Lasna­ mägian age, and their stratigraphic position and fauna! characteristics are described. The results indicated the existence of a single cohort for the duration of the flooding period. Non-ovigerous females and males were present in the pond throughout the study period. However, ovigerous females were present from mid-April to early July. Males had valves significantly larger and higher than females. The relationship between the valve length and the valve height showed positive allometry in males and negative allometry in females and the whole population (mature and immature individuals). The smallest mature male was 8.13 mm in valve length, whereas the smallest ovigerous female was 8.21 mm in valve length. Females outnumbered males in winter and early spring, and males were more abundant in late spring and early summer. The mean number of eggs on ovigerous females was 574.74 ± 245.29, ranging from 241 to 1068 eggs/female.
