Previous meetings • The clubs have been drawn together once previously, each winning 3-0 away in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League group stage. Lyon qualified for the round of 16 for the fifth successive season with their Matchday 6 victory at Ibrox, finishing second in Group E behind Barcelona, while third-placed Rangers moved into the UEFA Cup, where they went on to reach the final – their first in Europe for 36 years. • Rangers won their first four home games against French opposition, the last of them in 1971, but have managed no victories in the eight since then (D3 L5). That encounter against Lyon, which featured Karim Benzema's first UEFA Champions League double, is the most recent. • Lyon have won four of their six UEFA matches against Scottish clubs, including two of the three in Glasgow, with one win and one defeat against Celtic in addition to that 2007 victory at Ibrox. Form guide Rangers • Undefeated champions of Scotland in 2020/21 as they claimed a record-extending 55th domestic league title, Rangers also played 13 matches in the UEFA Europa League as they progressed from the second qualifying round to the round of 16, where they were eliminated by Slavia Praha (1-1 a, 0-2 h). • Rangers returned to the UEFA Champions League for the first time in a decade this term, but their adventure lasted just two matches as they lost both third qualifying round legs 2-1 to Malmö and therefore transferred into the UEFA Europa League play-offs, where they edged Armenian champions Alashkert (1-0 h, 0-0 a) to reach the UEFA Europa League group stage for the fourth successive season. They have improved in each of the previous three campaigns, all under manager Steven Gerrard, finishing third in 2018/19, second in 2019/20 and first, ahead of Benfica, Standard Liège and Lech Poznań, in 2020/21. • The Glasgow giants have lost just four of their last 27 European home matches (W17 D6), although two of those defeats have come in the last three – against Slavia and Malmö. They remain unbeaten at Ibrox, however, in the UEFA Europa League group stage (W5 D4). Lyon • Lyon finished the 2020/21 Ligue 1 campaign in fourth place, seven points behind champions LOSC Lille, to return to European competition after a rare season's absence as direct qualifiers for the UEFA Europa League group stage. In their most recent continental campaign they reached the semi-finals of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League. • Les Gones have won more matches in the UEFA Europa League than any other French club (21), scoring more goals (70), and were semi-finalists in 2016/17 having also reached the last eight in 2013/14. This is their fourth appearance in the group stage, from which they have progressed to the round of 32 on each occasion, twice as group winners, in 2012/13 and 2013/14. On their last appearance, in 2017/18, they were runners-up in Group E to Atalanta with 11 points, eventually going out on away goals in the round of 16 to CSKA Moskva (1-0 a, 2-3 h). • Lyon have lost only one of their nine away matches in the UEFA Europa League group stage (W4 D4) – the most recent, 0-1 against Atalanta on Matchday 6 in 2017/18. They have lost four of their last five European away fixtures, all in the UEFA Champions League, the exception a 2-0 win at RB Leipzig two years ago.

  • Record Audience for the Olympique Lyonnais
Record audience for the Olympique Lyonnais - FC Barcelona match Lyon, 28 November 2007. Olympique Lyonnais continues to show how attractive and popular it is with the general public, on both national and international levels. Yesterday’s Champions League return match between Olympique Lyonnais and FC Barcelona set a new audience record this season for FT1: - 7,538,440 spectators watched the game on TF1, with a peak of 8.7 million during the last ten minutes. This was the largest audience of this year’s Champions League on TF1 (market share: 28.7%). OL now occupies the top two spots in the TF1 audience ranking, having registered 6.9 million spectators during the first match against Barcelona. Olympique de Marseille occupies 3rd place (Liverpool – Marseille, 3 October 2007) with 6.8 million spectators. - Nearly 90 television stations worldwide broadcast the match, including stations in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and South America. Twenty-one of them were present yesterday at Gerland, where 300 journalists followed the event. If Olympique Lyonnais wins in Glasgow against the Rangers on 12 December, it will qualify once again for the first knockout round (last 16) of the Champions League competition. Any other result in this last match of the group phase of the Champions League would qualify the club for the first knockout round (last 32) of the UEFA Cup. “We can only be satisfied with last night’s results at Gerland,” said Jean-Michel Aulas, Chairman and CEO of OL Groupe. “Our Group’s momentum in partnerships, in the development of new services such as the interactive OL on demand, … and our performance on the pitch make us more confident of our ability to achieve the objectives we have set for the current financial year.” About OL Groupe Organised around Olympique Lyonnais, the football club founded in 1950 and headed by Jean-Michel Aulas since 1987, OL Groupe has been a leader in media and sport-related entertainment in France since its creation in 1999.
